ANNOYING POP-UP ADS ON METALSUCKS?
Friday, September 12th, 2008 at 1:01pm by MetalSucksWe’ve had a couple of users complain about pop-up ads on our site. We would not knowingly EVER foist those upon you. So we’re trying to figure out what’s happening — were these a couple of isolated incidents or is there something wrong with our site? If you DO happen to experience this, please take a screen shot and take note of what banner ads are running at the top of the site (below the MS header) and the top ad spot in the left sidebar, and send these to vince [at] metalsucks.net. Thank you, and sorry to anyone this has affected.
Yes, it’s real sporadic. Occasionally I’ll be redirected to some PC Piracy Cleaner site or something.
I have had this, but fortunately Norton kicked in and blocked the attempt that it made to access my PC. I’ll SS it if it returns.

Yep, I get the same thing sometimes, I always hit the back button before it can start its buttfuckery. The PC piracy cleaner site will actually stick a virus on your computer if you hit the wrong thing, it was a bitch to get rid of.

Yeah, happened to me multiple times, PC cleaner, etc. Will SN next time it happens.
I also had the same problem the others mentioned. (although I think it’s called PC Privacy, not piracy…but I could be wrong) As the others have said it is very sporadic. It usually minimizes my browser and I get a pop-up box that says something about your pc may be infected and wants you to click cancel or continue. I always have to close my browser to get rid of it (DON”T CLICK ON THE BOX!!!)
Never happened to me. BTW I’m using Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1.
I’ve had the same thing over the last few weeks. Normally Firefox detects the attempt and blocks it, but a few times it doesn’t and I have to do the same thing Jirky was talking about.
I’m using Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1 too and it’s happened to me.
The spyware’s embedded in someone’s comment as it doesn’t occur on the main page and will only pop up if you allow the comments on certain posts to pop up.
At least that’s what I’ve gathered. I’ve seen this thing a few times before(I’m a computer tech btw), it’s not anything horribly bad, but it’s annoying if you don’t know how to take care of it.
Jirky has the right idea, until it gets fixed, just don’t click the box and cancel out your browser.
I’m on this site all day everyday and I’ve never seen a popup. I have pretty stringent popup blocking, but I’m always notified when one is blocked, so I don’t think I’ve ever been a victim of this.

For the record, I actually look at the ads on your site, because for the most part, they’re honestly quite relevant to my interests. Now, if I start seeing crap for PC Piracy Cleaner or some such thing… =P

has happened numerous times, redirected to that cleaner site, and then it prompts me with dialog boxes. its not a popup so firefox isnt stopping it.
I’ve seen this a few times. I’m not sure its a true popup, one cause firefox doesn’t catch it and two cause it also closes this window and auto-redirects it to their website. I was meaning to email you guys about this, glad to see I wasn’t the only one having issues with it. Can’t say I’ve noticed any specific ad that makes it pop up.
using new Mozilla Firefox, and was hit with it a few times but luckily my AVG professional Anti virus stopped it from infecting my computer.
kind of surprised when it happened….but hey…what ya gonna do, it happens lol.

I get the PC Privacy or Piracy thing. (whichever it is) on occasion. It seems about like once a month.
I got it just now opening the article, I’ve gotten it four times, but nothing malignant from the AV, I couldn’t tell you what was doing it as it redirects you, and once you go back all the ads are of course different.
Yeh, I’ve had some sporadic PC Virus Cleaner shit at least 4-5 times in recent weeks. Thinking about it it is specific to your site. Assumed it was some form of spyware on my own machine until now. It is annoying.
