GREY MACHINE: JUSTIN BROADRICK AND AARON TURNER MAKE BEAUTIFUL NOISE TOGETHER

Wednesday, September 24th, 2008 at 11:22am by Axl Rosenberg

Does Justin Broadrick ever fucking sleep? It would be impressive enough that the guy puts out more music in a single year than most artists do in a five, but even more incredible is that pretty much all of it is awesome. It must just be in the dude’s DNA to make great music.

Broadrick’s latest project is Grey Machine, a collaboration with Isis’ Aaron Turner (Jesu’s Dave Chochrane and Diarmuid Dalton also contribute.). For anyone who misses the days when Broadrick’s music used to be on the heavier side of the spectrum (as opposed to the soothing, repetitive aural waves of Jesu), this is the perfect music for you: it’s obviously not Napalm Death, but it’s definitely more in the vein of Streetcleaner-era Godflesh. Which is not to say it sounds JUST like Godflesh – but that might give you some idea of the direction the group seems to be heading in.

The band has made a free mp3 of their song “Vultures Descend,” off their forthcoming album Disconnected, available for free download. Check it out below.

Grey Machine, “Vultures Descend” – from Disconnected (release date TBA)

If you listen really really hard, you can hear not one, but two whole chord progressions…oh wait, I was wrong. Yep, that’s the same fuzzy chord progression for about 37 minutes, or what feels like it anyway.

  7. Adam says:

Well, it’s not quite what I expected. I guess I don’t know what I was expecting. It’s got a kind of drum ‘n’ bass sound to it a times. It’s distorted but not too distorted. I’m not disappointed, but I’m not terribly impressed.

P.S. All I found on MySpace was a band of little kids doing some cheesy rock from Pennsylvania.

Sammy: you don’t love music that goes outside of convention? It irritates you? That works for me.

  11. Klaus says:

The most impressive thing about Justin as mentioned above is that he never sleeps, he is trying new music directions. This song is fucking awesome, you can call it noise but even that you must know how to do it. There is no middle therm: Or you love or you hate it! (I love it!)

  12. Matt Janovic says:

Klaus: Agreed, but most people want to listen to the same thing again, over and over. I love what he does, but the majority of folks out there are close-minded and fear change of any kind. That’s because they’re emotionally retarded. ;0)

  13. [...] to know that the Aaron Turner / Justin Broadrick collaboration Grey Machine (which we first told you about back in September) just released a 12″ single for “Vultures Descend” via beardo metal specialists [...]

  14. [...] first wrote about Greymachine last September, when I foolishly thought the band was called Grey Machine; then [...]

I shall look up Grey Machine right away. I loved Godflesh, and this sounds like good news! I love True Industrial, not the teeny-shitfaced crap that Marylyn Pantsdown Manson chucks out. Good on you J Broadrick!

  16. deconstructor says:

    …but i wasn’t really that much impressed with Jesu…
