THE WORST OF BOTH POSSIBLE WORLDS: JONATHAN DAVIS COVERS LIL’ WAYNE
Friday, September 26th, 2008 at 12:45pm by Axl RosenbergThis morning longtime MetalSucks Maniac Sammy sent us a link to the below YouTube clip of Korn’s Jonathan Davis covering Lil’ Wayne’s “Got Money,” noting that “Unfortunately, [Slipknot guitarist] Jim Root is part of this atrocity.” I’m not that surprised that Root was willing to work with Davis, given the ‘Knots ties to the world of nu-metal, although you’d think the dude would be better utilized; pretty much anyone could have played this guitar part.
Anyways, I agree with Sammy that the song blows. Then again, I don’t have a lot of love for Lil’ Wayne or Jonathan Davis, so a Davis cover was pretty much bound to be the aural equivalent of someone vomiting on you while someone else is already raping you.
I’m sure Korn fans think this is the shit and will applaud Davis for stepping outside of his comfort zone (but not really), but the thing about Korn fans is, they like Korn. So their opinions on this matter are gonna be kinda iffy at best.
I’m sure that Davis has a solo album or something where this cover will eventually appear, but I don’t know any of the details and I don’t care enough to do the research. If you actually like this shit, I’m sure there’s a MySpace page or something where you can get additional info.

There are still Korn fans?
What the hell? Hey Davis, try to lay off the autotune next time….
@dthrasher
There’s still some in captivity in the LA and London zoos.
Wow. Aural rape, indeed. This “song” – if one would call it that – must be competitive in the voluminous field of “Worst recorded music/sound” of all time.
now i liked korn’s music up til their last cd, but i can’t see how anyone would like this shit
if you don’t like this song, then you don’t like fun
Not quite the highlight of either Jim Root’s or Johnathan Davis’ career.
Anyone gonna pick up the new Jazmine Sullivan album?
I love Korn. I guess Jon just woke up today and said “I guess I’ll ruin my reputation today”
Looks like Davis succeeded in the impossible task of making Lil’ Wayne’s version actually sound good.
Never liked Korn, hate Johnathon Davis, hate Lil Wayne more. This song would be so much better if you stabbed yourself in the ears with a rusty, AIDs infected butcher knife before listening to it.
Other than that it’s as good as the original.
Johnathan-fattydingdongs-Davis ruined his reputation ten fuckin’ years ago when he started tailoring his band to appeal to the jocks who called him a ‘faget’ in high school. This is just bonus shite. Lil’ Wayne?
-thanks america.
Are you inferring that Lil Wayne is the worst MC in hip-hop? While i can’t say he’s the BEST, it’s absurd to say he’s the worst.
Jesus titttyfucking Christ, that was horrible.
Wow, I know there’s a lot of Korn hate in the metal community but you’re all forgeting history here. I remember nearly 20 years ago the hatred directed at Anthrax when they did “I’m The Man” and then covered “Bring The Noize” w/Public Enemy. Those 2 songs can be directly pointed to as main influences of Korn and the whole Nu-Metal movement whether you like it or not. This same brand of hatred was spewed at Anthrax at that time but it brought some bands that I do like into the fold, like Korn and the Deftones. Rap expresses the anger of young black men, Metal expresses the anger of the young white men. Sometimes when they come together it’s good sometimes it is not, Limp Bizkit. Personally I didn’t like this song but I’m not going to condemn Jonathan Davis for essentially returning to his own roots. Just my thoughts, You can all go back to hating now.
What does a young nigger boy have to be mad at?YT isn’t giving him enough welfare money?
The cops are arresting it when it’s caught commiting a crime. But don’t worry all niggers have to do is report it to Sharpton and they’ll blame the crime on whites.
When the hell did John Davis become Cher? Jesus fuck. Oh well, I guess he finally came full circle like Fred Durst did, now to wait for the inevitable total failure and sex tape release in a desperate attempt to revive his career.
It’s kind of ridiculous the amount of people on here talking trash on Korn. Consider the fact that the vast majority of the people who read this site are definitely under the age of 30, and if you belong to said age group, Korn was almost undoubtedly one of the bands that got you into metal to begin with. That said, I will agree that this song is a little absurd.
Fail. What are you talking about.Do you even listen to anything that’s came out after ‘90?
I guess not since Korn is just some fucking niggercore nu-metal shitband.I’m 27 and Pantera got me into Metal. Not that shit.
This song isn’t going to appear on his solo album.
Anthony beat me to it. The songs not going to get any official release. It’s just something they did to fuck around. Apparently musicians have to maintain seriousness and keep up a “cool, rockstar appearance” at all times. It’s not okay to goof off and have fun. Music isn’t supposed to be fun, it’s supposed to be “teh mosT brootalz!!!!!!”
I have to point out my love for the fact that apparently the bloggers on this site can’t even be bothered to do competent research for their stories. It’s obviously much more important to come across as snarky trend-followers (that’s right, you are exactly what you pretend to hate. It’s transparent. Everyone knows. Move along now) than it is to write a complete story. 5 minutes spent on a shitty site like Blabbermouth gave me information that should have been in this story. But apparently “Axl” doesn’t feel that it’s cool to even try to be more informed than even the shittiest sites competing for his readers.
Maybe if you guys stopped worrying about pushing your political agendas at every turn you could focus on writing complete, competent news stories.
For the record, I haven’t even listened to the song because I have no desire to.
ummm lern2swim, some where in that cute rant of yours, u failed to exactly specify what your point was. No one said anything about it not being ‘brootal’ enough, or that musicians cant fuck around (wer the fuck did u ge tht from?) Just the cover blows, and the original wasn’t great either.
And ummm what research??? What information that axl should have included that wa so important????? And why the fuck are commenting if you didnt even listen to the song????? AND wtf here makes axl a trend chaser??? WHAT political agenda???? ur not makin any fuckin sense 2 be honest, so if u wer trying to sound incredibly clever and condescending, you kinda failed…
Oh, Jebus. Question for question, here we go(I didn’t think any of what I said was that obtuse)
Your first statement of confusion about my overall point has to do with the general tone of the article. We get it already, the bloggers on this site are too cool to like any band that was ever lumped into nu metal. Mainly because of the fact that they were not “brootal” enough.
Moving onto it being okay for musicians to fuck around… that has to do with Axl treating this like it’s something more than Davis himself has apparently stated it to be, simply something he and Jim Root fucked around with in the studio. Apparently, however, that’s worthy of shit talk as though it was released as a lead single for a new album or something.
Research? Like I said, even shitty ass blabbermouth had the info that this has nothing to do with any official release by Davis or anyone else. Instead of that “information” we were given…(moving onto your next question) more trend loving bullshit of simply talking shit about something that isn’t vogue anymore. Something that the bloggers on this site are prone to do. Bitch about that which isn’t trendy. Therefore… “trendchasing.”
The political comment had more to do with the general feeling on this website that almost every story is worth nothing more to the bloggers than the newest opportunity to post some “witty” headline that barely relates to the story but instead has some political bullshit.
I’ll admit, I posted my initial post at a moment that I was just incredibly irritated for some reason with a bunch of the stories on the site in general. That being said, I didn’t feel my comments were that difficult to get.
So what your trying to say in your little rants is that metalsucks is not allowed to NOT like nu metal? Disliking this crap is not ‘trend chasing’ its a logically reasoned point of view, which you would probably come to as well if you actually bothered to listen to the track the article featured…..
It also begs the question, if you don’t liek the opinions of bloggers here, why the fuck are you on this site exactly?
I’m not saying it about nu metal in particular. I’m talking about the tone of certain articles in general. Anything that doesn’t fit their view of what is “real” metal is automatically shat on. I know there’s a thin line between talking shit about something that sucks and talking shit about something just because you don’t like it. i just feel that MS has been crossing that line more and more. This article in particular, well, lil wayne sucks, Jonathan Davis/Korn I don’t mind so much except for the fact that he does crap like cover lil wayne. There’s no point to this article but to talk shit though. If they don’t care enough to reseach something fully then don’t even report on it. It’s like a newscaster reporting, “There was a plane crash today but I don’t feel like finding out what airline or where because I don’t like planes”(over- exaggeration, yes, but you get my point, I hope). Just don’t report on it if it’s not important enough to get the correct information. This combined with the fact that the stuff they do promote in a positive light is what is “trendy” right now comes across as, yes, “trend chasing.”
For the record, I can’t stand the “genre over-assignment” of everything that is done now. it serves no purpose but to give people easy shit to fight over. Nu metal for example has basically become a blanket term for anything that came out in the mid 90’s to 2000 or so that people want to talk shit about. I’ve seen the term applied to so many bands that sound nothing alike that it’s rediculous. There’s plenty of bands that the term has been applied to that I enjoy and there’s plenty that I dislike.
I come here because I do like a lot of the stuff they promote so it’s a good source of information on quality bands. I just feel that, sometimes(not necessarily this time even), they shit on quality bands that don’t fit into their preferred genre(which happens to be fairly “trendy” right now). It’s not even limited to bands that I like. It gets old even when it’s a band I don’t particularly care for. I realize it’s just the tone of the articles a lot of the time. I just wish I could get quality info about good music without the tone of the writing seeming like it has become the point more than the music itself. The constant politicizing has just compounded this feeling, I guess.
Again, it was more of a general feeling applied to a specific story. I just feel that the site could serve a better purpose than to promote the infighting that prevents the genre from being so much more than it is.
By the way, I just listened to the song. If I was forced to assign it a genre, it’s not nu metal. It’s rap. Just because it’s white guys who came into the public eye when nu metal became a genre and there’s guitar under it, does not change that fact. I wouldn’t even consider it rap metal or whatever random term people would consider appropriate. It’s rap. No less rap then something like Cypress Hill or beastie boys(both have used real instruments vs just samples). As I said, however, it’s easier to talk shit about things when you lump them all together for easy categorization.
The song is crap though. My issue, however, wasn’t the dislike of the song. Maybe this just wasn’t the right place to discuss this.
‘If I was forced to assign it a genre, it’s not nu metal. It’s rap’
Well duh, its a lil’wayne song
JEEEEEEESUS – stfu, both of you. neither of you are actually countering each others argument, your just talking at each other.
1 – The song sucks, regardless of how it is intended to be released.
2 – Who gives a shit if they want to be “political.” Because, a) it’s a blog which is all opinions anyway, and b) its just over a month away from one of the most buzzworthy elections in US History.
3 – Who fucking cares about genres. God I hate when you fags try to determine, “Is it nu-metal, is it emo-core, is it operatic-power-rapsi-hardcore” IS IT GOOD OR IS IT BAD?! End of fucking discussion.
4 – And if the guys at MS want to focus on “nu-metal” or these new wave metal bands, its only because that’s what’s popular right now, and as much as I don’t particularly care for most of the bands that they cover on this site (Iwrestledabearonce and Ghengis Tron are some of the shittiest noises to ever come out of my speakers), but I can respect that there are a lot of people who are really interested in them, so I skim through and look for something else that interests me. And every once and while I see two guys whining at each other in the forums and get my entertainment by yelling at them.
Andrew, we’re talking to each other. This is a comments section. We’re commenting. If everyone who wanted to discuss thins here just shut up, the comments sections would be pretty fucking boring. You’re the only one getting bent out of shape here. Also, if you read my comment, you would have seen that I also mentioned that I hate all the genre bullshit. So I don’t know exactly who you’re referring to with the “you fags…” comment. My point was that the bloggers seem too concerned with genre. So, are you calling them fags?
I just find it hilarious that we were simply having a fairly civil, adult conversation and you felt the urge to pop in here with your totally random shit. Now that’s what I would consider a rant.
wow its like someone raped my ears with dynamite. i really dont see how this is stepping out of the “comfort zone” seeing as how korn are basicaly rappers that try to play insturments.
LOVE LIL WAYNE
lil zane was the sexyest one in this vid

That song is awesome, I love it, I also love the comment the lead singer said about metal fans with thier thumbs up thier asses. Bunch of music snobs who like a band till someone else starts liking it.
