METAL BEEF: METALLICA VS. KIP WINGER

It may’ve happened 15 years ago, but where we come from there’s no shame in digging up old dirt as the intrepid reporters at Buzzgrinder have, right? In a mid-nineties interview with Kip Winger, the hirsute bassist/singer shared his hatred of Metallica, apparently brought on by an offensive clip in the “Nothing Else Matters” video in which Lars Ulrich is seen removing darts from a pinned-up poster of Winger:

That is why it’s the great irony that we ended up on that geeky guy’s shirt on Beavis & Butthead, because Metallica couldn’t play what we play, they couldn’t do it, they literally – technically couldn’t do it. And I’ll fucking challenge those chumps to a fight any day of the week, but we could play their music with our hands tied behind our back.

      winger is ok couple of great tunes, good rock , metallica first 4 albums great up to justice for all the rest is shit.,you dont throw stones at other bands unless you can back it up ,as for musicians quality winger much better musicians than metallica and dont even say lars good drummer not that good

    I mean, I wouldn’t say hes wrong about Metallica’s technical proficiency, but the difference is that James and Lars are great song writers, and Kip Winger wrote cherry fuckin pie.

      If you had affinity for that genre then you can tell the difference. There is a huge difference between poison and winger, for example. And they were not shitty. They were excellent musicians in their genre. They probably partied harder than anyone on this site and can nowadays chillax on their yacht if they didn’t burn out on drugs.

    Also, what Sammy said. Although I think Winger did have some decent songs, people’s taste for Metallica have been soured by their recent releases and it smears their past albums.

    Guys do you really know what you talking about. Winger have nothing to do with motley crew because Motley suck even more than metallica. Winger made really inteligent hard melodic rock and they were/are still really good technically . The problem was that bands like them ,Extreme and Mr. Big was difficult to understand for guys like you that write only shit. That’s why they didnt sell that much like Metallica and Motley. Maybe they didnt sell their music as they should. Great musicians are not great bussiness man Dream theater are also technically the best band in the world but not selling so well as Metallica. I rest my case. So please guys write stuff but think a litlle

    no no. just because some bands went to music theory class and know their scales and shit doesn’t make them better song writers. metallica wrote better songs and thats why they sold more albums and have lasted for 20 years

    Saw Winger live yesterday. In contrast to Dream Theater they do not only play technically perfect music but they also created great melodies that you can listen to. So let’s think about what we have in Metallica: the lest talented famous drummer in the whole heavy metal world (with the worst new metal indie assfuck traitor loser taste of music, this has much more of eating shit than of broadening horizons), surrounded by a bunch of problem drinkers who look like the guys you would have put into a garbage can at school. James Hetfield tells us that motley crue look like whores? goat, did he ever take a look in the mirror? haha.
    Every 10 year old child with music lessons can replay songs from metallica, just check youtube for proofs. But that is not even the point…in fact it is that metallica are arrogant asswholes who gained much more success than they ever deserved (just listen to the last two albums, no one can seriously try to tell me this is “good” music in any way) while Winger never got half the success they would have deserved for their talented, well played music… thanks to meaningless MTV bastards who boycotted the band in the high time of this kind of music. Just listen to WINGERs new record, “Karma”. Will show you that they are more than an average hair metal band, this is killer rock music and far, far above Metallica level in any way.

    Yes. They wrote such wonderful albums like ST. Anger and Death Magnetic. Early Metallica was fucking amazing because they were so heavy and were capable of coming up with catchy riffs. Modern Metallica is fucking garbage because they sold out.

    I’ll admit that I’m not a huge Winger fan, but fuck. You can’t say that they didn’t know how to play. They were one of the most technically proficient bands I’ve seen. It’s kind of ironic because when you imagine glam metal, you imagine talentless punks playing when it couldn’t be any further from the truth in most cases. They’re just regular musicians who have their own taste in music which is perfectly fine.

    Just goes to show how you shouldn’t judge bands based on genres because of the stigma attached to certain labels like “hair metal.” Judge bands based on how good their music is.
