NINTENDO METAL; DR. ZILOG HAVE YOUR 8-BIT FIX

Friday, October 3rd, 2008 at 2:49pm by

Of all the vintage videogame systems, the original Nintendo always had the best music. And something about it seemed to lend itself well to metal; there are plenty of websites offering metal-reinterpretations of classic NES music (among them the excellent Metroid Metal) and Horse the Band even took to calling their style “Nintendo Metal” for a while. But as far as I can tell there haven’t been any metal bands — or at least any good ones — that have done an admirable job of creating original Nintendo-based material.

Enter Dr. Zilog, the two-man Florida outfit that composes original metal using the actual sound-card from the original NES. Smoke a bowl to this shit and CRANK it, remembering the glory days of yore when things were simpler. Maybe magic mushrooms would be more appropriate.

I’ve always preferred The Neskimos. They put on a great live show. They’ve been around for a long time.

I highly recommend checking out their version of Cannibal Corpse’s “Unleashing The Bloodthirsty” in 8-bit form! *It’s on their myspace btw*

They list Donkey Kong Country and Sonic as influences, but those were 16 bit games. Fucking posers!

Seriously, for great video game metal you have to check out Powerglove. They play completely instrumental versions of video game themes, but they really add their own touch to them. And they’re ridiculously talented.

Do yourselves a favor and check them out, because they deserve all the exposure they can get.

The band Powerglove is the shit. Meander on over to myspace and check them out. They cover tons of NES songs. I think they are on tour right now too…

Powerglove are awesome in that utterly, insanely ridiculous way that Dragonforce are. Having said that I’m liking Dr. Zilog more. Old school without being tired and clichéd.

Thank your for all the positive responses everyone and thanks to the reviewer for even considering listening to my stuff!

And to Ross, Music is Music.
I’m influenced by all sorts of different genres,
Listen to my stuff, you will find not even the slightest shred of 16-bit in there.
