I don’t hate Nickelback on the level I do other bands (see Limp Bizkit). I just find them so middle of the road, boring and generic that I just don’t care. But I understand why they are so popular. Their fans are the ones who never hear anything unless it’s on Top 40 radio. The people who say they are “metal” fans because they have a Disturbed CD in their collection. The type of folks who have made mainstream country music the atrocity it is today. People like that are the bread and butter of the music industry. Give them something lukewarm with a nice beat and they snatch it up.

NickelBack is basically the new Creed. Okay fine, they’re not THAT bad. I’m glad Creed broke up, because you hear them in Europe too, and frankly I vomit at the thought of Creed being appreciated. Plus, I always thought that Scot Stapp was a fucking asshole.

Actually, I don’t hate NickelBack, I just don’t like them particularly much.

To this day, I’ve heard ONLY ONE half-decent song by them, this was like a decade ago it was called “Breathe”. Back then – it was the first time I had ever heard of them, and “Breathe” had some distorted-guitar-work in the song that made me wonder if they were a ‘light-metal’, ‘hard-alt’ variety band…But everything else I’ve heard as been basically ‘Creed’ variety garbage i.e. “With HHarms wHide HHHopen” (added emphasis on the ‘h’).

Just my opinion.

Yes, Nickelback sucks beyond what what seem humanly possible, but this little experiment could be done with countless bands, good and bad. Hell, every modern band playing in drop-D are playing every every fucking song in the same key. Most bands write around one or two musical keys and structures.

Really guys, you don’t have to work this hard to find reasons to hate Nickelback. And guess what? Generic pop/rock/mainstream music has been popular since it’s been called pop. Nickelback has just been genius enough to milk it forever and get the crossover audience. I hate their music, but I do respect Chad Kroeger for his ability to write hit after hit, year after year. He doesn’t just have his finger on the pulse of the modern pop fan, he has a fucking intravenous tube to the heart of the audience.

Jokes at Nickelback’s expense are my bread and butter, honestly if I hear their music it takes a while to register who it could be, it’s reached the point that when I hear their sound(which is the sound of most generic rock bands), I just immediately assume it’s Nickelback, and surprisingly it hasn’t been quite a few times.

Fuck Mike for comparing his band to AC/DC of course.

I understand the whole “distinct sound” theory, and Nickelback’s songs sounding the same are more than just having a distinct sound. They found a song structure that is marketable and they are just going to “milk the cow, til its teets dry up”. When I listen to a band like Lamb of God I can hear the “distinct sound” that registers into my head as “yeah, this is Lamb of God”!
In contrast to that statement, what I don’t hear while listening to a LOG song is the same song formula used to make the last “single” on the newest single. Sure, parts of a song will sound similar to another song here and there, overuse of certain riffs and beats are common place in any band. But, I haven’t heard a new Lamb of God song I can say sounds just like “Black Label” or “now you have something to die for”.
As a musician, I will claim my abilities go as far as my knowledge of the instrument in my hands. Put a drum set in front of me, I can play many rudiments, beats, and speeds. Most of the time, I will start with beats that i know and have played extensively to the point where they are now second nature to me. Then i will try some new stuff after i’ve warmed up. Problem is, change can be a very scary idea. Like myself when it comes to the idea of marriage, I get tense, stressed and have a loss for words. But my shakeyness of marriage is not something that will be open for the whole world to hear and criticise.
Imagine writing a song that will be open for the world to hear and judge and the fear that may arise of said song being a failure. When you don’t want to loose your nice house, cars and trophy wife, making similar sounding songs for the same consumers isn’t stupid, it is unoriginal, but it’s a wise marketing decision.
