POLL: HOW DO YOU ACQUIRE NEW MUSIC?

Thursday, October 9th, 2008 at 11:09am by

CDWe are beyond spoiled; every day tons of packages arrive at the gates of the MetalSucks Mansion full of CDs from superstar and local bands alike. On top of that, net-savvy publicists regularly send us links to download full albums well before their release date. Needless to say we don’t ever pay for music. I can’t speak for Axl, but I feel pretty out of touch with how people actually acquire music — physical or digital? buy or steal? what medium/method? So I figured we’d just ask ya’ll. Given, this is a website, so the results will probably be somewhat skewed — but you never know. Presumably some people actually still go to the store and buy CDs, ’cause record labels still make ‘em. So you tell us: how do you get your new music?

Dudes, Azureus is a torrent program too. This whole thing is a secret CIA plot to weed out the illegal downloaders isn’t it? lol

If Amazon did their digital stuff with a good bitrate (sorry, I’m NOT paying for 192kbs shit, wankers), I’d probably actually buy some stuff from there. Digitally, it’s easier to get lossless wav/FLAC stuff from torrents than it is from Amazon (iTunes? that’s a joke), which is sort of sad.

I actually have made some decent purchases without hearing whole albums first. AGATG, Winds of Plague, and All Shall Perish’s new album. All of those are solid, but nothing AMAZING. Otherwise it’s not worth my time buying something from a band I don’t listen to a lot. Hell, I LOVE the Waste but I had a hard time paying $14 at Hot Pockets (err, gothic. No, topic) for it.

Used to get most of my music SLSK (awesome if you’re looking for rare and less known stuff). Nowadays, I just get it off of various blogs.
Other than that, I try to always get a shirt or a vinyl at a show.

Depending on the size and wealth of a band I’ll buy a CD. for example, i bought 2 genghis tron cds since i love GT and i’ve been a fan of them from before they were signed and they’re shit poor, but i downloaded JFAC cd for free since they dont deserve half the money they get and i’m not paying them for a sub par- to below sub par cd. don’t get me wrong, JFAC provides a good mindless listen if i’m in a car or surfing the internet or playing a game, but they make really simple music and thats for no debate.

    depends…

sometimes i download via torrents, sometimes i actually buy it online (amazon.co.uk, play.com) and other times i actually go to a record store and buy an album

Bought most of my CDs at Best Buy or whatever local used music store, but ever since I moved, I’ve been getting some stuff off of torrents. A hell of a lot nicer than driving for an hour to pay too much for CDs, but I kinda miss actually having the physical product in my hands.

I buy my shit from the HMV I work at. Buy what I can buy lying around, order in what I want if we don’t have it. I get most shit at around or a bit over half price. Works for me. I suppose when I quit I might start downloading and/or being more selective, but I’ve just been taking advantage of cheapass CD’s lately.

We download heaps, delete what we don’t like, and buy what we do like (either locally or off Amazon/CDPacific, whatever is cheapest/easiest).

There is however, one exception: on principle, I refuse to purchase the new Metallica album :)
