METAL LIVES IN NYC THIS WEEK; VINCE’S CMJ SHOW PICKS

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008 at 1:15pm by

cmj 2008It’s the first day of CMJ and I already want to punch every swept-hair indie rock snob that I see on the street in the face. Picking up my badge this morning was a nightmare; aside from having to deal with said indie snob fuckwads from Idaho or wherever the hell they come from, registration opened a half hour late and was completely disorganized.

ANYWAY, since everyone is asking me what shows I’m going to this week, here it is, laid out plain and simple, after the jump. These are the shows I’ll be at, so come along if you so choose and we will drink heartily together! Most of ‘em are metal, but not all. See you there.

Being broke sucks.Totally wanted to hit up the Metal Blade showcase. This or the Apocalypse are pretty fucking awesome for the type of music they play. And of course if I wasn’t broke and invited to 7 different social gatherings, I’d totally be at Fantana’s for God Forbid.

I had plenty of great times at CMJ back in the early ’90s. Checking out NIN on their first show ever in NYC with about 12 other people; seeing Sepultura’s first US gig along with Wolfsbane (featuring Blaze Bailey who replaced Bruce Dickinson in Iron Maiden) at the DK Zone, a gay bondage club; seeing Primus/Faith No More/Voi Vod/Soundgarden together on the same bill; asking Bruce Dickinson at a press conference about the death of several fans during a Maiden gig in the UK just a few weeks before and getting a sincere and compassionate response; seeing White Zombie with around 20 other people; seeing System of a Down play in front of 25 people, one of them who just happened to be Rick Rubin who subsequently snatched then off of their smallish Cherry Street label and signed them to his American label; having the band I used to manage, 16 Volt, play on the same bill as some of the guys from Helmet; seeing the most punk rock show ever — Aphex Twin’s Richard James taking his position prone on a couch, cracking open his laptop and pressing one or two buttons every five minutes while two overgrown day-glo fuzzy bears danced around him on stage.

I also stayed in the hotel at the bottom of the Twin Towers every time I went.

    Have fun, Vince!

I’m going to try and make it to Fontana’s tonight. Need to go see Del McCoury first. Old school bluegrass then Metal Sucks! Not a bad night.

I know of a few secret shows but none are remotely metal.
