THE FIRST DVD YOU’LL BUY IN 2009

When you think about it, being French Canadian must be the worst of both possible worlds. You’re not really French but you are, you’re not really Canadian but you are, and if you’re like most people, you probably don’t really wanna be Canadian anyway (All due respect to Sebastian Bach, William Shatner, Michael J. Fox, and MetalSucks’ own resident canuck David Bee Roth).

So maybe that’s why Despised Icon make such furious music. It can be hard to understand what they’re actually saying amidst all the br00tality and pig squeals, but I think it’s something along the lines of “FUCK! WE’RE FRENCH CANADIANS! GRRRRRR!!!”

ANYWAY, Century will release a decidedly intense, decidedly French Canadian Despised Icon DVD, entitled Montreal Assault, on January 27, 2009. I haven’t seen it yet, but it already has a few things going for it:

  • It’s Despised Icon.
  • They put on an awesome live show.
  • The DVD has a concert film which was directed by David Brodsky, who has directed some insanely excellent concert films in the past (like God Forbid’s recent DVD!).
  • The live version of “The Ills of Modern Man” currently streaming on the band’s MySpace page sounds killer.
  • There’s a documentary which is sure to feature lots of hilarious French Canadian accents. Drinking games based around trying to figure out what the fuck the band members are saying will surely ensue.

So, yeah. January 27, 2009. That’s shortly after my birthday. Fellow MetalSucks staffers, take note.

    I’m glad to be Canadian even if it only means I’m not American. I’m pretty sure most Canadians are happy to be Canadian (except possibly the French).

    I totally agree…even though the Metalsucks community, or at least axl and vince, seem to have a left slant which is cool, the US and its people dont have the best international reputation. Canadians on the other hand are one of the most welcomed travelers in the world….to the point where some americans patch on Canadian flags for better treatment when their roll through Europe. Being Canadian is totally cooler than being American.

    These guys are the best live death metal band i have ever seen. They blew away the rest of their tour last winter(Acacia Strain, Tony Danza, Full Blown Choas) and i have never seen any band before that night who have been tighter or clean sounding. Even Nile and Behemoth both just sound like noise live compaired to DI!

    Being Canadian is alright, but all the metal in me comes from being half Norwegian.

    Despised Icon still have the title of least impressive death metal band from Montreal in my books. Gimme some Quo Vadis, Gorguts, Augury or Neuraxis any day of the week.

    You can not blame all Americans for the stupidity of our government. However, you could blame ignorant and arrogant Americans for putting those stooges in charge in the first place. Some are easily manipulated by the republican party and their use of scare tactics of terrorism, foreign policy and tax hikes to obtain votes and political placement. Diplomatically we are probably not the best country, but we are far from the worst.

I’m gonna go with poorly framed shots, over use of unnecessary colored filters in an attempt to salvage those poorly framed shots, “flashy” “edgy” cutting, once again, attempting to salvage the shitty cinematography and ultimately nothing memorable or distinguishing whatsoever! More recycled-played-out-cookie-cutter-bullshit! Kill yourself Brodsky!!!

    As for everybody slamming DI, have you listened to them, really? Cause I hate generic-death-core as much as the next metal kid but Despised Icon have my vote.

    I’m from quebec and i’m a huge fan of our music scene, and i don’t think it’s that bad to be ” french-canadian”, we juste don’t care.
