Got linked to here from Satan Rosenbloom's article on Serpents Rise, and I have to say that that does not sound like Derek at all, and in fact on his forum he posted something that would pretty much contradict everything that Steve said. Derek, in his own words, specifically did the tours and the recording for the money, not for being a member of a band or anything else and Steve didn't cough up, apparently. Both seem really sincere so it's more a matter of Derek's word against Steve's but I would be more inclined to agree with Derek because I know that he's not the type of dude that would join an underground band.

@Ninja

I think he was just using "gay" and "homo" as generic insults, like "arsehole" or the like.

Anyways, great interview, TITD (narf) are sick.

Today is the day are fucking sick, willpower and temple of the morning star are two of the most evil and sinister sounding albums ever laid down, and having seen them live when they passed through oxford a few years back i was floored (despite having had a really invasive surgery to remove some compacted wisdom teeth like a couple of days prior) It was fucking intense a couple of friends came away genuinely stunned.

But i agree with a lot of what is being said steve is a pretty intense character and i wouldnt be surprised if much of this isnt in some way coloured in his favour, but then when isnt that the case in interviews.

Still cool interview regardless!

Why walk away from “that much money”?
Artists get paid pretty much in peanuts for royalties unless they’re Metallica. The cost of paying the lawyers would likely eclipse whatever he stood to make from the royalties. It’d cost him money to get what’s his.

If Soilent Green could handle suing Relapse (If you believe Steve) and getting what was due them , then Steve should be able to. Even if TITD is owed a $1 a disc and that seems low, then Im sure he could find a lawyer to take the case.

Steve is bitter because Mastodon is bigger than TITD. That Lamb of God is bigger than TITD. Problem is, before this last year of touring how many shows did TITD do in the last 5 years? If you sit on your ass and play with your guns, instead of touring you'll never get bigger.

@ The Metal Nerd: If you read through the entire interview Steve consistently uses the words "homo" and "gay" to describe people/scenario's he doesn't like -this isn't isolated to the Roddy photo session thing. (Funny enough, I was almost in shock that Austin didn't use the word "fag/faggot" by the end of the interview. And, well, there you go -you did it for him.)

And, honestly, every label has the same goal: to make money. It doesn't matter whether it's Relapse or Roadrunner or RCA...these deals are highly termed and vary from artist to artist. Anyway, it sounds like he probably had a shitty lawyer who couldn't negotiate a good deal and/or didn't outline the terms for him etc and he subsequently got FUCKED (just a *speculation*...it was prolly far more complex.)

In no way am I saying labels, Relapse or otherwise, are holy and can-do-no-wrong, but he just sounds overly defensive. Plus, how could you have not known that the label you're directly competing against (and were once on) is distributed by the same major corporate entity?

Ugh. The man is a pretty awesome talent and as a plus, easy on the eyes....and yet. A big BIG yet.

The whole Derrick Roddy acting like a fag thing I think was ment more as a slam rather than homophobia. Dude is a MASSIVE tool so..yeah, he is spiteful and all twards the Relapse label dudes, but not anymore than Napalm were at Digby Pearson, thanks to again, Gordon Conrad. Hell, Remember what Glen Benton said about the heads of Roadrunner? Practicaly was makeing death threats. Give it a few years, Steve will hopefully cool off a bit and try a more rational route. Like an anti-Gordon Conrad/fuck Relapse album.

It's one thing to lash out at the system and talk about it in a sensible, well-thought out manner. But this came off as just one big bitter and spiteful rant against Relapse and anyone else who isn't on the Steve Austin train.

"...but finally we got a distribution deal with Sony MRI Red, which is distribution that’s just as big or bigger than Relapse Records." Um, Relapse has a deal and has been going through Sony Red for YEARS.

I'll give the guy credit for putting his money where his mouth is and starting his own label and being spot-on about the way music is headed. But he comes off as a cocky jerk -and with some homophobia issues at that.

Why walk away from "that much money"?
Artists get paid pretty much in peanuts for royalties unless they're Metallica. The cost of paying the lawyers would likely eclipse whatever he stood to make from the royalties. It'd cost him money to get what's his.
Great interview!

I'm not so pathetic that I would need to consider killing myself so no thanks. How many guys have gone thru Today is the day? 15? 20? There has to be a reason everyone who has ever played with him runs for the hills. Have you seen any of the comments from the Mastodon guys? If Relapse is so wrong here why hasn't Steve sued them? If he was really owed for 100,000 sales why not get a lawyer, that's a few hundred thousand dollars right there. I don't care how DIY you are, no one walks away from that kind of scratch without a fight.
