EVEN DIR EN GREY’S VIDEOS ARE JAPANESE TO ME

Monday, November 10th, 2008 at 1:00pm by Vince Neilstein

That I don’t know what the fuck “Dozing Green” is about is understandable given it’s entirely in Japanese; but apparently Dir En Grey even make their videos in Japanese, because I have no fucking clue what the hell is going on in this one. Nevertheless the song is pretty cool and so is the video, both in unexpected and non-cliche ways. Psyched to see these dudes play in NYC this Friday with The Human Abstract.

Very interesting band, surprised the first time I ever saw them (Saku on the ball). One of the parts that has always bothered me about Japanese ‘metal’ bands is how they hybrid that Japanese pop sound with heavier music and Dir En Grey does try to do a lot to escape it, but never fully pulls it off.
However, if you want to hear something interesting, dude actually puts out a pretty decent attempt at death growling during the song “Stuck Man” off the new disc. This song isn’t really a good example of the last half of that cd, which is insanity. They do have one hell of a live show though.

If you want a good japanese metal group, check out Blood Stain Child’s Idolator cd.

  2. Hell yeah, seeing these guys tomorrow night in Philly! I am pumped, THA and one of my favorite bands? Fuck yes

    FUCK I LOVE THESE GUYS

And just to clarify…most of their recent lyrics have been in English…you just can’t tell

Blood Stain Child is literally In Flames with electronics. At least Dir En Grey are doing something thats pretty much uniquely their own. I can always tell wen it’s them

  6. Voodoo Trucker says:

You’ll like them at first and then you’ll realize that they’re ripping off Korn AND Marilyn Manson.

    Shit
    Fest

  7. DangerRobot says:

If this was an American band you guys wouldn’t be cumming in your shorts over them. They are really not that good. I hate this fucking, “they are from another country, so they are so awesome” shit. Grow some ears you retards. They are not that damn good.

FYI, this version of the music video is with the lyrics entirely in English.

They recently released this version for MTV. They did English versions of Dozing Green and Glass Skin. Dozing was a direct translation song to the exact melody and fit perfectly so it layered over the original video better. Glass Skin has entirely rewritten lyrics in English, and they also layered that over the music video for that song.

They wanted to express both songs in both languages because believe it or not each language gives the songs a different atmosphere.

I LOVE DIR EN GREY!!!Have seen them on friday in NYC (11/14/08) and they really rocks!I have a question – do u guys know where can I get a delux edition of UROBOROS (by The End Records)???

The main problem they have is that they have the potential to be a good band. Unfortunately, its like .”Ive heard bands like Intronaut, Deftones and Isis give off the same melodic feeling.” Maybe not in the same exact style, but they’ve accomplished what Dir En Grey was shooting for by leaps and bounds. They sound like they’re still trying to come out of that american nu-metal/alt rock sound that plagued the 90s. What they need to do, is actually get Justin Broaderick or anyone who has produced for Intronaut, Isis, Boris or even Neurosis to help them tune their sound in a better direction. Send them anywhere to get them the chance to be awesome. I mean ACTUALLY awesome. Not “99% of our fan base is a bunch of japanophiles saying: kawaii neko desu desu desu.” They’re just lackluster. I’m just glad they stopped with all the bullshit nu-metal riffing. I’m going to try and check this album out…and then judge further. I just hope its the start of actually not sucking ass.
