ALICE IN CHAINS WONDERLAND

What a great weekend! Apparently I’m rich! You see, I got an email from Mr. John Kofi White, branch manager of a financial institution in Ghana, who is offering me 30% of his $7,597.864 family fortune. All I have to do is give him my bank account info and let him transfer it through there, because he wishes to remain anonymous! Thanks to this stroke of good fortune, I’ll be quitting MetalSucks, effective tomorrow, and will be offering free Jameson to anyone who stops by the MS Mansion tonight as I embark on my new life as a millionaire.

Elsewhere in the “too good to be true” department, Alice in Chains are recording a new album. It may suck, but I remain cautiously optimistic that one of my favorite bands ever will do something at least somewhat worthwhile (check out a studio video of Sean Kinney tracking drums for the new record here). The new record is due Summer 2009; in the meantime, check out this live performance of the classic lineup performing “Again” on some TV show in the mid-nineties. Judging by Layne’s appearance it looks like this was filmed not too far before the famed [in my Desert Island 5!] Unplugged show. Layne is definitely on his last legs here and it’s creepy as hell… but fuckin’ great nonetheless.

My god I love this band.

I too am remaining optimistic about this record. Easily one of my all time favorite bands!!!

    poor layne. a shame, really

Cantrell’s solo album almost channels Layne, proving how much of AIC Cantrell really is. Layne looks and sounds like hell here.

i kept waiting for the song to sound all wavy and messed up like it did on the the tape i used to have.

I’m not really familiar with JC’s first solo album at all, but “Degredation Trip” is outstanding. Sammy’s right – AIC is Jerry’s band. As much as I love Layne’s voice and as integral it was to AIC’s sound, Jerry is the real linchpin. As far as projects like this go, I’m much, much more optimistic and excited for this than for other “reunion/replacing dead band member with new guy” projects.

@Bucketopoultry: If I’m not mistaken – and I may be, as I make allowances for being incorrect 37 times per day – “Degradation Trip” is Cantrell’s only solo album. And yes, it’s at least outstanding.

Unplugged is in my Desert Island 5 as well.

New singer William was great live…I’m curious to see how this album turns out.

@ Sammy: Cantrell had a solo album before Degradation Trip. Its called Boggy Depot, and I think he put it out somewhere around ’98. i think listening to it puts in perspcetive why Layne was such an integral member of AIC, cause Boggy Depot sounds just like AIC, but Jerry singing lead just doesnt do what Layne did.

Im interested to see what this album will sound like with William. I dont think AIC is capable of making an album that totally sucks.

They were fucking amazing live. Fucked up Layne or semi-fucked up Layne.
