BAND THAT NEVER REALLY EXISTED BREAKS UP

Wednesday, November 19th, 2008 at 11:02am by Axl Rosenberg

There’s a rumor going around that Billy Howerdel’s Ashes Divide have broken up. To which I say: HUH?

Was Ashes Divide ever a real band? I always thought it was just a Howerdel solo project with a cooler name, the same way Nine Inch Nails is really just Trent Reznor. So what the fuck is going on? Is Howerdel splitting from himself? Can’t he just hire new backing musicians? Does anyone even know the names of any of the dudes in this band besides Howerdel? I know Josh Freese played drums on the album, but I couldn’t for the life of me tell you who was playing drums the one time I saw these dudes live.

Oh well. Maybe Howerdel can now revive his other sort-of-but-not-really a band, A Perfect Circle, or join one of the sort-of-but-not-really a bands he used to guitar tech for, like Smashing Pumpkins, Guns N’ Roses or NIN. Whatever the case, I hope he has a long and prosperous career with some sort-of-but-not-really a band.

He needs to get with Marilyn Manson, his playing is already similar to what Manson needs to put out a great metal album.

  2. billybob says:

Billy is the man. Whatever he does will be good so whatevs.

  3. Errol says:

    Can you say APC reunion!?!

  4. Paul D says:

    @Errol

Only if they promise to ONLY play songs from the first album. The other two (with a couple of exceptions) are pretty much crap.

Too bad, I really like the Ashes Divide record.

  5. pluto28 says:

I think he needs to just take a break and re-charge his batteries.
The 3rd APC album, and Ashes Divide were pretty weak compared to his best stuff.

    @ Paul
I didn’t find any problems with “Thirteenth Step.” It was just more Pink Floyd-ish

Cullen stole the thought right out of my head…haha…sounds like Twilight….I’m not a 15 year old girl, I swear!

ANYWAY! I think with the new heavy direction Manson keeps talking about taking, Howerdel would be the perfect addition to the band.

    @ Kullen and Kye

Plus Howerdel already looks like the walking dead. Jeez, that guy must wear a lot of big floppy hats when he’s not performing.

  8. enemyofgod72 says:

Ashes Divide was essentially APC without Maynard leaving Howerdel to do the vocals. He wasn’t too bad but Maynard is much better. I think odds would be on a new APC album before anything else. Personally I’d like to see a new Tool and APC album come out at the same time just to see them on tour together. It might wear MJK out but what a great show it would be.

  9. weedeater666 says:

Sorry to say but there wont be any apc reunions maynard says so all the time.

  10. asdfsdf says:

maynard had much less cheesy lyrics, too. not saying his were completely cheeseless, which is not the case at all. but nevertheless, it wasn’t the kind of cheese that’s offensive.

and plus, i think i’d rather have a new tool album opposed to a new apc. they made their small impact and left a few good works, but i could care less if it happened again. tool still has to make up for that only okay last album.

  11. asdfsdf says:

and on a side note, maynard’s son devo played cello for the band i believe.

not so sure he did on tour, though.

  12. enemyofgod72 says:

@weedeater666 — I saw a recent MJK interview where he didn’t rule it out. Also heard a rumor a new Tool album may not take as long as the usual 4 or 5 year wait so who the hell knows.

@asdfsdf — 10,000 Days was awesome, they could change up their live show though.
