FUNERAL DOOM = COLOSSEUM

colosseum - chapter 2: numquamI don’t as much love the sub-genre of funeral doom so much as I love the fact that there even is a kind of music called funeral doom. I mean, what the fuck?? Only in metal.

Anywho, Finnish kings of funeral doom Colosseum have a new track called “Towards The Infinite” that they’ve made available for free download on their official website, and it’s officially the most death-ridden, dark, gloomy track I’ve ever heard, every bit fitting of a funeral. If I were killing babies, this would be the soundtrack.

The track comes from Colosseum’s upcoming album Chapter 2: Numquam, due in early 2009 via Firedoom (natch) Music. Peep it below.

that song is fn terrible. honestly, who would enjoy listening to that?

Not bad. I’d never heard of Colosseum before, but it’s nice to hear someone leaning more towards a classical/melodic sound in the funeral doom. Dissonance will only get you so far.

I have to say that I honestly kind of enjoyed this. Actually a little bit more then “kind of”. I thought it was pretty damn enjoyable. That sub-genre is something Sam Dunn has to add to his Metal Flow chart. Fucking classic. =) It kind of reminded me of Giant Squid, except I thought GS was far too stoner for my taste. This is just the perfect mix of slow, melancholy distortion and vocals that don’t make me want to writhe on the floor like a heroin addict. That slightly more ‘deathy’ feel makes it. All in all, neat stuff.

I actually like funeral doom, for when I’m alone, or whenever I want to clear a room. Another good band that has a little more going on is Comatose Vigil, which is kind of off rhythm, kind of pretty. Also, I don’t think it’s “funeral” doom, but Ahab’s “Call Of The Wretched Sea”. If you ever have a party that you want to end, put on either of those records and watch people shuffle out.
