FILE UNDER “ABOMINATIONS”: NICKELBACK COVER METALLICA’S “THE FOUR HORSEMEN”

Monday, November 24th, 2008 at 3:30pm by Vince Neilstein

Blame it on Fall Out Boy. Shortly after these emo butt dumplings covered Pantera, Madonna did the same only to be one-upped by Gym Class Heroes covering Lamb of God. Now, behold… Nickelback covering Metallica. As much as it pains me to say it, Chad Kroeger imitating James Hetfield actually sounds better than James Hetfield imitating James Hetfield in the year 2008.

I wonder how many of the dipshits in the audience actually knew what song was being played.

  2. Princess says:

    “emo butt dumplings” lol.

I feel like Nickleback covering your song is like John McCain using your song for his campaign…when are these artists going to stand up and say “THAT’S ENOUGH, NICKELBACK” ?

  3. Carter says:

haha yeah he sounds better than hetfield.. the drumming is actually on beat too.

  4. John says:

Is there any way that we can fast forward to the time when Nickleback doesn’t exist..

  5. b-rad says:

all of these suck… but nothing is as gut-wrenching as Celine Dion covering AC/DC.

  6. To back up Vince’s claim that Chad Kroeger sounds better than James Hetfield check out this live footage of Metallica from this past summer. The guitars kill, but James’s “singing” and Lars’s knocking over of trashcans drumming sound like hell.

  7. Johnny Death says:

John: your comment got me thinking. What would this world be like if there wasen’t act’s out there like Nickelback (who, as much as i hate to admit, didn’t do half bad on this cover song), and what if all there was to listen to was metal, or if metal was the standard in music. Would you still like it if there wasen’t all these so-called lame, sucky, crap, shite groups out playing thier hearts out every night? I can say that most of today’s most popular acts probably aren’t in my taste, but also i probably dislike more or close to as many metal bands than i do popular acts. This is mostly due to the fact that i listen to more metal than anything else. The main point i guess i’m trying to get to is that, why is it that many fans of “heavy” music spend more time crapping on bands they don’t like, trying to spread the hate around like the world actually cares that you hate Nickelback? Instead, what if we could become something much more if we just encouraged the musicians we like, and support the one’s you as an individual like. I am not a Celine Dion fan, but i will not deny she has a powerful voice and a talent that spreads much further than most of the vocalist we cherish.

  8. Jesse says:

That was dead on. I’ll have to give Chad Kroeger some credit for doing a damn good job of covering Hetfield.

  9. Brett says:

had Kroeger imitating James Hetfield actually sounds better than James Hetfield imitating James Hetfield in the year 2008.

    Sad But True.

  10. seveword says:

The drums sounded like drums, Chad Kroeger sounds better than Hetfield, for a crappy youtube video it had decent sound and the guitars weren’t overprocessed and compressed…I hate to say it, but from an informed listener’s standpoint, that minute of a Metallica song wasn’t bad at all.

Sometimes, against all odds, musicians actually have a fun time playing music.

  11. Eye of Newt says:

@Johnny Death – I agree with you regarding the number of metal bands I dislike, but I don’t hear them just walking around town, on the TV, on the radio, or on movie soundtracks. Nickelback is fuckin’ everywhere and it just hurts.

  12. Factor says:

    I still hate them.

  13. Sammy says:

I think Kroeger and Nickelback know exactly what they are and don’t give a fuck. I think they’re metal fans but know how to put money in the bank. I suspect they could be a good band if they wanted to be, but would rather make huge steaming piles of money.

  14. Malacoda says:

The most surprising part is that the crowd likes it.

  15. Jenna says:

Eh. I still want to kill this man.

  16. gumplunger says:

So if Nickelback sounds better than Metallica playing Metallica songs, why is this an “abomination”?

  17. vmanv says:

i agree with sammy, these guys do what they do and it sells. like anyone who visits this site wouldn’t join this band in a second for all the $$$ and girls.

  18. Johnny Death says:

Eye of Newt: If you think hearing a song on the radio is painful then your truly a lucky person. For if that statement is true, you must live a quite priviledged life. T biggest reason why I listen to heavy music is because it helps me to open my mind to the struggles, hardship, and difficulties i deal with every day in life. Nickelback has never made me not want to get up in the morning because i just couldn’t stand to hear one of thier songs on the ride to work. As far as when i walk around town, all i hear is metal, it’s in my head, and will never leave even if i want it too. TV and movie soundtracks? I just don’t know if let’s say a Morbid Angel song would really give the same effect to the viewer of a romantic comedy as a Nickelback song would. Although i would love to see that, i don’t think it would really hit the mark with most viewers.

  19. Vikingfromhell890 says:

If you listen closely at 0:42, some jackass says Enter Sandman because that’s the only Metallica song Nickelback fans know.

  20. enemyofgod72 says:

I don’t know whether to be sad or happy that there are so many people cheering for Metallica at a Nickleback show. Back in the day this would have been the equivalent of a Madonna fan being at a Death show. Maybe this is the true abomination.

  21. Gordon Bombay says:

Even if the singer yelled “I LIKE BOYS IN TIGHT SHORTS” all those A-holes still would have screamed their heads off, so it had nothing to do with Metallica. But how can anyone really hate Nickelback, sure their music is garbage, but because of them Roadrunner can sign more Metal bands.

  22. Jim says:

This isn’t the first time that Nickelback has performed a Metallica song

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzLvWgHe28M

  23. younggunz says:

Maybe Nickleback can keep Metallica from playing Metallica songs, while also keeping Nickleback from playing Nickleback songs.

  24. Richaod says:

Nickelback have actually covered Cowboys from Hell too…

  25. Noch says:

I couldn’t watch more than a few seconds of this video since this Chad guy has this tendancy to shake his ass when he’s walking, and even when he’s not.

    Fucking disgusting.Yup,there,I said it.

By the way the sound of the guitar (and I’m not talking about the way the riffs are played or anything) sounds more accurate for a glam band than for an 80s thrash metal cover.Fucking pathetic. But oh well, can’t bring out a guitar that’s accurate and a wall of amps that has enough of a crushing sound when it’s at a fucking Nickelback concert..

  26. Matt says:

Nickelback actually covered “It Ain’t Like That” by Alice in Chains WITH Jerry Cantrell when they toured with Jerry Cantrell, and sadly, it was kind of good.

  27. Brutal Jay says:

Nickelback used to be a fairly decent band. But, they caved to commercial pressure and started writing nothing but ballads. I want the old Nickelback… back.

  28. Charlie B says:

I don’t buy the statement that bands cave into commercial pressure. They don’t cave in they accept commercialization because they want to make a lot of money.
