why do people always bring up slipknot? lol i love slipknot. i hated them at first but they grew on me. im not some teen jumping on a bandwagon. i listen to what i want and idgaf if its accepted as “cool” by the rest of the metal community. in my opinion the people who generalize a particular bands fans are the ones riding the bandwagon :)

Metal Church was the first band to make a thrash release and Overkill wrote the first thrash song. Metallica and Megadeth can FOAD. they haven’t been good in years and they continue to ruin their names and the name of thrash by releasing crap album after crap album. That goes for you too Slayer, and Anthrax, bring Belladonna back.

And people who use popularity as a damn indication that a band has talent are stupid. You might as well go listen to the Jonas Brothers or Miley Cyrus… Or Slipknot and Lamb of God. POPULARITY =/= TALENT. Especially when most of the fans are angsty teens who’d jump on any bandwagon if it were popular.

Look at the songwriting credits. Metallica did *not* do Ride the Lightning without Mustaine.

Besides, all you’re arguing is that Metallica got to be better / more popular than Mustaine. That has nothing to do with who invented the playing styles. All the accounts seem to agree that the rhythm guitar style came from the period where Mustaine and Hetfield were working together. After this long, I doubt either of them even remember who did what.

i cannot disagree more with people who say Metallica couldn’t have made it this far without Dave Mustaine. hmmmm, let’s see, Dave Mustaine was only in the band for what? 1-2 years and in ONE ALBUM!?!?! how many more AMAZING albums did they produce without him?? (…AJFA, Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets, Death Magnetic) and on top of the albums, there is the admittance into the national rock and roll hall of fame, the creation of a Metallica Guitar Hero, etc etc etc. Some people think that Dave Mustaine is a God…no, he helped start metallica and got them through their first album, and thats IT. if Dave Mustaine was as good and as influencial as some people say he is/was, then why is Metallica SSSOOOO much more well known and powerful and successful than Megadeth??? I don’t see Megadeth in the R&RHofF….

dave is an amazing guitarist and lyricist, he isnt the best but he is up there. he is a dick, but thats ok.

megadeth at least tried to stay true to their original form but there is no topping the opening riffs of “holy wars”

did he create thrash? no.

did he influence the evolution? hands down yes.

I’m afraid I can’t agree with that. The World Needs a Hero and The System has Failed were both good, but Mustaine needs input/feedback/something from his other guitar players, and he didn’t seem to get it from Sean Drover on United Abominations (Or Jeff Young on So far, So Good, So What). Since the first week or so, I haven’t listened to it more than a couple of times.

I have high hopes for the new one with Chris Broderick, though.

Mustaine’s solos sound like he’s terrified of breaking a string; I’ve never heard him do a full-step bend, even when it’s clearly called for. In other words he has no balls.

And he’s the worst vocalist since the evolution of the hyoid bone.

He’s written some killer riffs, but his palm-muting is as timid as his string-bending. At least it was in the early days, I don’t know if he finally learned how to choke up on that shit and make it sound chunky. The first album sounded like he literally wasn’t muting the strings AT ALL.

But yeah, he’s a great riff-writer. But that’s all he is. Well, except for a world-class douchenozzle. (First time I’ve heard the “nozzle” variant. I approve.)

I just watched the documentary and no where in it does Dave say he invented Thrash. He says he’s influenced 3 of the major 5 but that’s it. And he did.
To say Slayers new shit is better? I’m sorry but have you heard God Hates Us All? Every fucking song on that sounds the same(besides maybe two songs.) – One of the worst albums ever created, hands down. And I love Slayer.
And as far as I’m concerned Metallica died in ‘91 where as Megadeth produced some kick ass albums after that. Death Magnetic is leaps and bounds better than any Metallica album they’ve made in the past 15 years..but that is NOT saying much.
To the guy who said Thank God for the day Metallica kicked him out…I dunno about that one. If Dave was still in Metallica they would be undeniably the biggest metal band and there would be no stupid arguments.
Yeah Dave’s a bit of an asshole, but so is majority of the human race. Get over it. Without Dave, Metallica would’ve never made it as big as they did.

Venom, Motorhead, Diamond Head, Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Mercyful Fate… Thinking Dave Mustaine may have let his success get to his head on this one. I love listening to Megadeth but to say Dave Mustaine solely invented thrash is simply inaccurate.

His playing may have rubbed off on Kerry King and James Hetfield but to even try to take credit for legendary albums such as Slayer’s Reign In Blood and Metallica’s self titled Black Album is just ridiculous. Credit where its due Dave Mustaine played his part but there’s more to Thrash than Dave Mustaine.

I might get some shit for saying this, but pre-thrash bands like Venom, Diamondhead, etc, are largely irrelevant, when talking about the formation of thrash.

Additionally, of course Marty Friedman (and frankly every lead guitarist that has ever been in Megadeth) plays circles around him, because THATS THE FUCKING POINT. The whole reason Dave gets those hired guns for Megadeth is because for one, he can’t solo to save his fucking life, and two, without them, Megadeth is missing a major component that every thrash band MUST have, a shredtastic lead player.

Oh and Andy, you must be on more drugs than Scott fucking Weiland if you think Slayer’s new material has topped Megadeth’s.

Rust In Peace is one of the greatest Metal Albums ever! Killing is My Buisness and Peace Sells are also up there. You gotta look at the full body of work. Dave lost it along time ago. He could have carried the torch but he dropped it. He always surrounded himself with excellent talent but eventually fell through on the songwriting. Slayer is the ultimate Thrash band period! Many of the great 80’s thrash bands at least attempted to go back to thier roots (Testament for example. Exodus is still putting out pretty good shit) Megadeth sucks now. They can still turn it around and I hope they will!

I love Megadeth, but i have always been less of a fan cuz dave has ALWAYS pissed me off with his arrogance. Yeah he has earned the right to be an asshole with his genious works, but he is still a fuckin prick. I absolutely think he DID NOT invent thrash. Without bands like diamond head, venom, motorhead…there would have been no metallica and no megadeth.

And thats complete bullshit about him being “the guitar player” in megadeth Marty Friedman played circles around him!!!!

Maybe you were referring to the comment I made about Metalsucks? If so, definitely not a projection. A large amount of articles posted here by the Metalsucks guys have a negative slant to them or rip on bands or individuals. I am surprised I need to point that out.
