I know there are those who think of tomorrow’s holiday as a celebration of what amounts to America’s genocide of native peoples. However, I would like to point out that the first foreign settlers of this part of the continent were still almost 300 years away from being “American”. And the current holiday (as celebrated in the U.S.) was not originally proclaimed in deference to or with reference to the “pilgrims”. It was merely set aside as a day to give thanks for our bounty. And by the way, the “god” to whom thanks was being given in the original American holiday proclamation was not specifically a Christian God.

Look I’m all about exposing certain holidays for the shams they are, like Columbus Day… but I have to go with Sammy on this one. Why should we not celebrate a day for thanks? Maybe instead of being so focused on the religious connotation behind it, we should just accept it as a time where people can come together and be grateful. Sure it is a consumer driven day, what with supermarkets making a killer, but it forces families to actually come together. Yes it is terrible that we’ve come to this point as a society where a day must bring us together, but at least we gather and enjoy company. I mean I have completely turned my back on religion and i am a history major and even I am not as embittered about Thanksgiving as some are.

Take five minutes and enjoy what you have instead of focusing on what the ACLU wants you to REMEMBER about the people who “started” Thanksgiving.

Living in Canada, I had Thanksgiving at the beginning of October. Damn, I would love another Thanksgiving right about now.
