FRIDAY SONG TO GET FRIED TO: DREAM THEATER – “THE MIRROR”

dream theater - awakeBefore Meshuggah was Meshuggah-ing and mind-fucking the feeble confines of what was rhythmically acceptable to our once feeble metal minds, Dream Theater was pushing the boundaries of mind-fuckery with their crushing masterpiece “The Mirror” on their 1994 album Awake. The section in question is the first minute of the song and the verses, in which John Petrucci plays the same simple chugga-chug pattern throughout while Mike Portnoy constantly changes the rhythm beneath. I think that’s called a polyrhythm (but I could be wrong). Get really stoned and try to wrap your head around this one… it ain’t easy.

Dream Theater – “The Mirror” (Awake)

“The Mirror” was way ahead of its time; it also is probably the heaviest Dream Theater song to date, or was at least until Train of Thought came out. Regardless, it fuckin’ kills. Enjoy.

Definitely awesome song, this one and Lie together is probably the best heavy Dream Theater stuff, at least in my opinion. Awake is a great album.

I would have to agree this is an awesome song, but on a different note.

Meshuggah released Contradictions Collapse in 1991, and their EP, None, came out in 1994. Sickening from the None EP has the “mindfuck” sound to it. Sorry to be the ass that points that out.

Top shout on this track! I saw DT play a few years ago but they didn’t play anything as heavy as this – DISAPPOINTING.

This is a great song – the simple seven-string riff is so effective. Though I think it’s technically not a polyrhythm – but something like the bridge before the guitar solo in Under a Glass Moon definitely is.

Meshuggah plays polyrythm stuff all day, Bleed off of Ob(zen) is a good example

Love Dream Theater! This track is definitly heavy and leads perfectly into Lie! The solo in Lie is great!!!!!!!

One of my favorite albums. It came out when I was in high school, and I left a school dance early to listen to it – that’s how much of a music dork I was for these dudes.

The part you describe…You don’t know where the all-important 1 and 3 three beats are until the drum and bass start up. The same thing happens in Rush’s “Stick It Out”. It’s like kicking the downbeat right in the crotch.

    Atheist fools!

  • Jon

Someone who believes in an imaginery space god calling others fools? Ironic.

  • Adam

Jon, he probably means the band Atheist.
I highly doubt he’s being a religious prick.
