FUCK ROLLING STONE PART DEUX: WHO ARE THE GREATEST METAL GUITARISTS OF ALL TIME?

Thursday, December 4th, 2008 at 3:00pm by Corey Mitchell

My first Fuck Rolling Stone post on metal singers was such a hit I thought I’d dig back into the RS archives and stir up some more shit. So, I decided to re-read their summertime list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time (also here).

Thankfully, there are a few metallic (but mostly rockish) noteworthy icons; however, extreme metal is woefully ignored. Nonetheless, the list did include Jimi Hendrix (#1), Jimmy Page (#9), Kirk Hammett (#11), Kurt Cobain (#12), Johnny Ramone (#16), Tom Morello (#26), Thurston Moore/Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth) (#33/#34), Joe Perry (#48), Ritchie Blackmore (#55), Vernon Reid (#66), Eddie Van Halen (#70), Adam Jones (Tool) (#75), D. Boon (The Minutemen) (#89), Glen Buxton (Alice Cooper) (#90), Wayne Kramer/Fred “Sonic” Smith (MC5) (#92/#93), Kevin Shields (My Bloody Valentine) (#95), Angus Young (#96), Leigh Stephens (Blue Cheer) (#98), Greg Ginn (Black Flag) (#99), and Kim Thayil (Soundgarden) (#100).

And, yet another reason why we here at the MetalSucks Mansion like to say “Fuck Rolling Stone!” — coming in at #86, TOMMY Iommi…yes, “TOMMY.” How the fuck do you not know the first name of one of the true legends of not only metal, but of rock guitars? Hmmmmmmmm….Please, clue me in.

IT’S TONY, YOU FUCKS!!!

Anyway, here is my stab at the best Metal Guitarists of All Time — and for a point of reference, my Old Fartness will be shining through here, as will my love for rhythm guitarists:

14. Spike Cassidy – (D.R.I.) – Crunchy, sloppy, and memorable as fuck. Here’s hoping he’s beaten his cancer scare.

13. Tom Scholz- (Boston) – the opening riff to “Smokin’” from their self-titled debut album kills to this day. Plus, the guy graduated from M.I.T. and invented new technology for Polaroid. How cool is that?

12. Joe SatrianiSurfing with the Alien is still a great album , plus he worked with Kirk Hammett and produced Possessed’s Eyes of Horror EP. How cool is that?

11. Al Jourgensen- (Ministry/Revolting Cocks/Pail/1000 Homo DJs/Lard/PTP/Acid Horse/Buck Satan) – riff-master non-pareil. Also produced Skrew’s debut while strung out on smack. How cool is that?

10. Adrian Smith – (Iron Maiden) – the backbone of this great band. Don’t believe me? Listen to Maiden’s output after his departure. Total crap.

9. Angus Young – (AC/DC) – Dun, dun-nu-nuh, dun-nu-nuh. Good enough for Beavis and Butthead, then it’s good enough for me. Not to mention, he was the gateway drug to heavier metal for plenty of Old Farts like me.

8. Scott Ian – (Anthrax/S.O.D.) – Probably the coolest guy in metal and easily the best rhythm guitarist alive even if his best work is twenty years behind him. NOT!

7. Gary Holt- (Exodus) – Douchebag or not, this guy has written some of the heaviest fucking riffs that ever aurally raped your ears. I like salad. Baked potato, some cream cheese, and some chives…I like salad.

6. Kirk Hammett- (Exodus/Metallica) – Guitarist for two of the Big Five thrash bands and he has to put up with Lars’ and James’ shit and has yet to go postal. How fucking cool is that?

5. Randy Rhoads – (Quiet Riot/Ozzy Osbourne) – Sure he’s the dead Munchkin god of metal guitarists, but he did play in Quiet Riot. Two to three point cred deduction for that misstep. RIP!

4. James Hetfield- (Metallica) – Pre-TBA of course. Proof that drugs and alcohol are not so bad after all.

3. Dave Mustaine- (Metallica/Megadeth) – Because, after all, he did invent thrash.

2. Eddie Van Halen- (Van Halen) – Mention the name Eddie Van Halen to an Old Fart like me and memories of road trips to the beach in Galveston, drinking unmentionable amounts of alcohol illegally, and clumsily trying to have sex in the backseat of my orange-on-the-outside, green-on-the-inside ‘73 Nova come crashing forth. Good times!

1. “Dimebag” Darrell Abbott- (Pantera/Damageplan/Rebel Meets Rebel) – I saw him (back when he was nicknamed “Diamond” Darrell) in a tiny nightclub in Houston ripping Metallica and Motley Crue covers, but what I was really excited about was hearing his leads on Projects in the Jungle. After two sets that lasted three hours, I then drank copious amounts of Texas brews with him followed by the now infamous Black Tooth Grins. I truly cannot think of a nicer person I have ever met in the business. His playing, of course, was phenomenal, emotional, and heavy as fuck. But what made Dime so incredible was his smile and devilish sense of humor. You are sorely missed. RIP!

Alright, let’s see what you’ve got. Tell me who your favorite axe-slingers, shredders, posers, crunchers, twiddlers, wammy bar abusers, rhythm kings, wankers, showboats, pick-sweeping, arpeggio masturbatin’, feedback fuckin’ Gods of Metal are!

  1. John says:

What exactly is good about Kurt Cobain? He ruined music for almost 20 years.

What a bunch of fucking idiots.

  2. key says:

    Jim Malone of Arsis
Jari Maenpaa, mastermind behind Wintersun and Ensiferum.

  3. Devin says:

@ John: What’s exactly good about Kurt Cobain? Oh I don’t know maybe his FUCKING MUSIC?

  4. shreddies says:

It’s pretty hard to ignore dudes like Michael Romeo, Malmsteen and even Alexi Laiho.

  5. Chip Northcutt says:

    Seriously;
Ritchie Blackmore, Michael Schenker, Tony Iommi, Glenn Tipton/KK Downing, Randy Rhoads, Dave Mustaine, Satyr, Dime

    • uwillbeheard says:

      What are you, like 50?

      • Draven420 says:

what the fuck does that matter? its fucking music…….besides todays music fucking sucks, the music industry has been ruined for about 20 years now but kurt cobain was NOT the cause of it kurt cobain brought great music back….music was never supposed to be fun….rock music anyway that was the 80s that brought that along and besides its all in the eye of the beholder…..but i feel that music has been ruined since the pop scene started, theyre fags who dont even write theyre own music and managed to be in the right place at the right time and its just getting worse as the years go on……bunch of sell out fucking pricks thats about it that play music in these times not too many bands that actually make music that means something anymore

  6. shreddies says:

oh shit! Paul fucking Gilbert is rediculous as well. One of the best shred songs ever = Paul Gilbert’s Terrifying Guitar Trip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JzcrpB7F90

…that video actually deserves to be embedded in it’s own post on the main blog page. just sayin’…one of my favourites.

  7. Conduit says:

As a deathhead when Nirvana broke huge (which, mind you, wasn’t so crazy until after he plastered his dome) I shrugged. Pretty cool Sabbath riffs that all just felt modern. It was interesting for me that punk kids were into their records yet I could drive through town and see my old teacher, prissy schoolgirls, and mexican cooks at the burger place all blasting it. They created the shit-ass rock cesspool that modern radio and TV is stuck in, and it’s hard to forgive that.

And grunge never killed hair metal, it was long dead before this ridiculous, semi-funny history editing became popular (VH1.) I’ll stand by what most Fogey’s and Old Fart’s believe as I do, and that is NirVana is possibly the most overrated band in history.

  8. Vaginasaur says:

I can never quite understand why Johnny Ramone is always included in these lists… I mean I like the Ramones as much as anyone, and sure, what they say is valid, but his style was like it was because he *wasn’t* a great guitarist

  9. tobie says:

Tim Miller and Luke Hoskins. PTH FTW

  10. dan says:

you’re gonna knock rolling stone for misspelling tony iommi’s name and then you’re gonna credit al jourgensen with being in “pail”? it was “pailhead”, dude.

  11. b-rad says:

    Kurt Cobain? seriously? um, ok.

    scotti hill [skid row]
    tim roth [into eternity]
    jimi hendrix
    Muhammed Suiçmez [necrophagist]
    pat o’brien [cannibal corpse]
    rocky george [suicidal tendencies]
    alex lifeson [rush]
    marty friedman [ex-megadeth]
brian sezter [not metal - but a bad motherfucker]

  12. Mezeppa23 says:

These are some of my favorites in no particular order.
Uli Jon Roth- Sails of Charon is awesome
    Tony MacAlpine- Shredgasm
Pin and Dan Weller- Listening to Sikth gives me an erection.
Kristian Niemann – He was a major part of Therion and w/o him Christofer Johnsson is fucked.
Jesper Stromblad/Glenn Ljungstrom/Bjorn Gelotte– From RtR and back.

  13. @dan: There is a “slight” difference — legendary rock guitarist v. one-off side project.

I accidentally referred to my friend Mike Titsworth (former Angkor Wat bassist along with Adam and Danny from Skrew who Al produced) and his most recent band, Pail. My mistake.

Plus, Rolling Stone contributors actually get paid.

  14. Megadave says:

It must fuckin kill Dave Mustaine that his replacement, the average at best guitar player Kirk Hammet made the list and he didn’t.

  15. Pat says:

Alex Skolnick, Marty Friedman, Zakk Wylde, Slash, Andreas Kisser, and Kerry King.

All amazing guitarists that I’m surprised nobody mentioned yet.

  16. Keith Al-Shareef says:

Okay, where the hell is Jeff Loomis? Gah, whatever, my list will include him. TOP 10:

10: Paul Gilbert (solo, Mr. Big, Racer X, nerdiest shredder ever!)
9: Luke Hoskins (Protest the Hero – Tim Millar does crazy shit too, but Hoskins records it, so he wins)
8: Dean Herrera (The Human Abstract)
7: Tony Iommi (BLACK FUCKING SABBATH)
6: Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen)
    5: Dimebag (Pantera, Damageplan)
    4: Marty Friedman (Megadeth, Cacophony)
3: Jimmy Page (I don’t need to tell you this)
2: Randy Rhoads (So what if he was in Quiet Riot? My dad went to high school with him!)
1: Jeff Loomis (Nevermore – there were others, but Nevermore is all you need)

  17. Big Scoob says:

UM HELLO …KERRY FUCKING KING …….

  18. BOB says:

KERRY KING!? He is friggin horrible.

  19. clowesy says:

Joint 1st spot goes to Rhoads and Dimebag…

In my opinion Randy Rhoads was one of the most technically gifted and influencial guitarists of all time. Blizzard of Ozz was a great album but Diary of a Madman was Rhoads’ best work… Truly great…

But there never has been and probably never will be again a guitarist who manages channel so much energy and emotion through just the sound of a guitar as Dimebag did. ‘Hollow’ from ‘Vulgar Display of Power’ is pobably the best example this you’ll ever hear.

    Two lives cut short…
    R.I.P

  20. Big Scoob says:

    ..

    also missing ….ACE FREHLEY!!!!

  21. Big Scoob says:

bob whos your top 10 in no particular order

im going to guess its “friggin horrible”

  22. Big Scoob says:

    iommi
    a young-acdc
    rhodes
    frehley
    evh
    downing/tippett
    a young -maiden
    MUSTAINE
    hammett
    k king
    DIME
    g Lynch
    zakk wylde

  23. RobotScythe says:

Ace Frehley- Many on the list wouldn’t be there if not for him

King Buzzo (The Melvins)- C’mon, it’s The Melvins man!

    Glenn Tipton

Jeff Hanneman- Jeff writes the coolest stuff in Slayer. And his solos are better.

    Leslie West

  24. Iron Mayden says:

I can’t believe Slash isn’t on that list. Seems like Rollingstone loves to talk about him almost as much as the White Stripes.

They should have included either Dave Murray or Adrian Smith, possibly both. I know that’s asking a lot of RS, but c’mon.

  25. Axolotl says:

You kinda ignored extreme metal on your list too, you know. To all the other extreme metal guitarists that got mentioned earlier I’d add these:

    Trey Azagthoth
    Fredrik Thordendal

…and Buckethead despite being in GNR for a while.

  26. Pat says:

And let’s not forget about the new wave of great metal guitarists.

Rob Arnold, Matt DeVries, Will Adler, Mark Morton, Jonathan Donais, Matt Bachand, Dallas Coyle, Doc Coyle.

  27. Iron Mayden says:

@ Corey: Adrian Smith – (Iron Maiden) – the backbone of this great band. Don’t believe me? Listen to Maiden’s output after his departure. Total crap.

Damn right. Steve’s a great songwriter, but clearly Adrian kept things interesting. The only good song that came out with Adrian gone was the Clansman. Not the album version. Blaze is awful. The live version with Bruce.

  28. JewJuice says:

    @ Megadave
Dave did make the list at #3.
And trying to say that Kirk is only an average guitar player is a stupid thing to say

  29. Gordon Bombay says:

Thor Shredsteen is easily the best guitarist of all time. If you don’t know who that is your a poser.

  30. malacoda says:

The best guitarists have to both have shred as well as songwriting. That’s why my picks are out for Satch, Vai, Mustaine, Buckethead, Randy Rhoads, and Dime.

  31. Tim says:

Don’t forget: James Murphey (Death, Testament, Obituary, and more), Paul Masvidal (Cynic), Muhammed Suiçmez (Necrophagist), and Phil Fasciana (Malevolent Creation)

and John 5 (Though I’m not a fan of Manson or Rob Zombie, J5’s solo albums are outstanding)

  32. Will says:

Nah man, Thor sucks! All I see him do is run his mouth, but he never ever picks up a guitar and puts his money where his mouth is!

  33. ferocious_fetus says:

    Dave Murray (Iron Maiden)

    Eddie Van Halen (duh)

    Dave Mustaine (Metallica/Megadeth)

Jeff Hanneman (wrote all the best Slayer songs)

    Chuck Schuldiner (DEATH!)

Trey Azagthoth (Freaking ass Morbid Angel solos)

    Terrance Hobbs (Suffocation)

    Muhammed Suiçmez (Necrophagist)

Dave Suzuki (bass/drums/holy-shit solos for Vital Remains)

Ben Weinman (MR. Dillinger Escape Plan…out spazz everyone)

  34. earth2tom says:

I am not about to try listing all of the great metal guitarists out there that have been left out, but where is Les Claypool? I know he plays a bass, but he transends being a mere bass player and is a guitar legend. Not to mention Primus is mainstream enough for Rolling Stone to have noticed him at one time in their pathetic lifes.

  35. palinaborted says:

If one is to limit one’s self to listing “metal” guitarists then I suppose Jimi Hendrix doesn’t necessarily fit the bill but considering the fact that some of the greatest guitarists of all time…Clapton, Page, etc….bow down to Hendrix and drop him as an influence then I shall remain adamant about Mr. Johnny Allen Hendrix belonging at the very top of the list. That being said, I agree with Corey’s top 3 but my top 5 would round as such:

    4. Tony Iommi
    5. Chuck Schuldiner

  36. Fightingmike says:

    Dimebag Darrell
James Hetfield(Not a fan of Hammett as much)
    Tony Iommi
    Jimmy Page
    Kurt Windstein
    Zack Wylde

  37. Johnny Death says:

Tom Scholz is an unexpected but very cool choice. I found out recently that one of my teacher’s from high school is now the drummer in Boston. It’s amasing the things that come from my little hometown, like everyones favorite teenage mutant’s, the ninja turtles.

  38. Doombot says:

    1. EVH & Hendrix
    2. Tony Iommi
    3. Jimmy Page
    4. Dave Mustaine
    5. Scott Gorham/Brian Robertson (Thin Lizzy)
    6. Alex Skolnick (Testament)
    7. John Christ (Danzig)
    8. Adrian Smith
    9. Buckethead
    10. Brian May (Queen)
    11. Jeff Hanneman/Kerry King
    12. Tommy Victor (Prong/Danzig)

  39. @Doombot: Ahhhhh, Tommy Victor is an excellent choice. I would also have to throw in Page Hamilton (Helmet).

  40. @earth2tom: I almost included Les Claypool in my list for the same exact reasons you listed. Alas, I decided to wait until I compile a FRS: Bass Players edition.

  41. Anthony says:

    Randy Rhodes
    Jeff Loomis
    Dave Mustaine
    Brian May (no, really)
    Dimebag Darrel
    KK Downing

  42. Damotello says:

    Kurt Ballou
    Ben Weinman
    Buckethead
    Bumblefoot
    Tony Iommi
Jake E. Lee (VERY underrated, look up his solo on “Suicide Solution”)
    VIvian Campbell

Kind of an eclectic mix, but fuck it!

  43. ZakknDime says:

    ZAKK FUCKIN WYLDE
glad too see you had dime
    The boys from Trivium rip
    Marty Friedman
    Jeff Lomis and Chris Broderick
    rusty cooley
    marc rizzo
    John donais
    kirk hammet
Oli Hebert from all that remains is really good too

Kerry king licks fucking nuts but i do love slayer…. A LOT

This is not of all time either i just like these guys

  44. Jewers says:

(Not the best of all time or anything, just some of my favorites)
    Willie Adler and Mark Morton
    Zakk Wylde
    Gus G.
Slash (I’m a sucker for the blues)
    Tom Morello
    Joe Satriani
    John Petruccci
    Dave Mustaine
    Oli Herbert
    Björn Gelotte
    Micheal Ammot
    Alexi Laiho

  45. Houston says:

I think its pretty funny that you bagged on Rolling Stone for ignoring extreme metal, then completely ignored extreme metal with your list. There’s a lot more to metal than heavy metal and thrash metal. Where’s the recognition of the great death metal guitarists like Trey Azagthoth, Chuck Schuldiner, James Murphy? Or more progressive guitarists like Michael Romeo or Paul Masvidal. I could go on, but I think I’ve illustrated my point. You put together a list of impressive guitarists, but in the process completely ignored entire genres of metal, and some of metal’s most amazing guitarists.

  46. DJ says:

I almost cried when I had to scroll down to the bottom to see someone mention Zakk Wylde

  47. DJ says:

and add Marc Rizzo to that

  48. @Houston: There’s a lot more to metal than heavy metal and thrash metal.

I agree that why I included DRI = hardcore/crossover; Boston = classic hard rock; Satriani = jazz/instrumental/hard rock; Ministry = industrial metal; SOD = crossover; AC/DC = blues rock/metal; Randy Rhoads = classic metal; VH = hard rock, in addition to the various thrash and metal bands.

As for completely ignoring extreme metal on my list, I believe we are simply talking about different timeframes. When I was a teenager (I’m 42 now, hence, Old Fart) bands like Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, and Exodus were the extreme metal bands of the time, so naturally these acts are going to grace the tops of my list. As I prefaced the post with, my Old Fartness would shine through on this list.

If I were to expand my list to say 25 or so, I would definitely include Chuck Schuldiner from Death, Andreas Kisser from Sepultura Billy White from Watchtower, Ron Jarzombek (sp??) from Watchtower, Tom G. Warrior, Walter S. from Quicksand, James Murphy, Alex Skolnick, Muhammed from Necrophagist, the dudes in Godspeed! You Black Emperor, Tommy Vetterli of Coroner, etc. I just believe on the whole, the ones I listed have more personal meaning to me, plus they brought together the entire package of metal — skill, emotion, attitude, style, etc.

  49. ^Not to mention that their list included 100 guitarists while mine only had 14!

  50. Cam says:

    @ Houston

Good call on Chuck Schuldiner, I just started listening to Death maybe a year ago, and his playing is phenomenal.

  51. j-rock says:

Scott Mellinger is quite adept with the 6 string as well just stopping in to give the man his props.

  52. I would suggest that you guys list band names so other readers who may not know the guitarist’s name can check out their band. Thanks.

  53. Ben says:

Brent Hinds kills. Dave Murray and A. Smith are great, and smith deserves credit for solid backing vocals too. Hetfield is the best rhythm player ever imo.

As for drummers…two words, Dave Lombardo.

  54. LilalCFH says:

    MY TOP 10:

    DIME
    THORDENAL (MESHUGGAH)
    HAGSTROM (MESHUGGAH)
    VOGG (DECAPITATED)
    AKERFELDT (OPETH)
    MALMSTROM (DARKANE/NON-HUMAN LEVEL)
    LOOMIS (NEVERMORE)
    SWANO (BLOODBATH)
    THAYIL (SOUNDGARDEN)
    TOWNSEND (SYL)

  55. large jockstrap says:

you forgot to add randy in ur rolling stone list. hes at no.85

he should be top 10 in my opinion, and as a guitar player for the last 7 years, i have some idea. not heaps, but some idea as to who should be there

  56. enemyofgod72 says:

For the vocalist version I posted some of what I think are glaring ommissions so here’s my list for guitarists:
Jeff Waters -Annihilator — This band doesn’t get alot of metal love but they’re pretty damn good.
Willie Adler/Mark Morton -Lamb of God — Mark got some love in this post but Willie didn’t and he fuckin shreds too!
Dino Cazares -Fear Factory — I haven’t been a fan of his recent work but he created FF’s sound.
Peter Wichers -Soilwork — We all just creamed ourselves a month or so ago when he returned to the band.
Adam Jones -Tool — I know I’ll probably get shit for this but I love Tool!
Dusty Hill -ZZ Top — This dude just rocks
Kenny Hickey -Type O Negative — Very underrated shredder
Jim Heath -Rev Horton Heat — I know they’re not metal but this dude shreds

And lastly just a comment, HOW IN THE JESUS H FUCKIN CHRIST COULD ROLLING STONE LEAVE DIMEBAG OFF THE LIST!!! They truly are retarded.

  57. Houston says:

Okay Corey, I see what you mean. I’m sure there’s a bit of discrepancy in your definition of extreme metal and the definition of some of the younger crowd such as myself. It’s funny how something that was labeled extreme 20 years ago is considered relatively tame by today’s standards. Also I kind of clumped AC/DC, Rhoads, and VH in “heavy metal” and I’ve never actually listened to Ministry so that statement was a little ignorantly put on my part.

  58. ezra says:

    Corey,
I fuckin love Quicksand, but wasn’t Walter really just singer/rhythm guitar guy, and the other dude did most of the axe work?

  59. Johnny Death says:

He may not be the greatest metal guitarist of all time, but you can’t deny how obvious it is that Michael Amott (Arch Enemy, Carcass, Carnage) love’s his guitar.

  60. ngnr says:

    12 Kurt Cobain …

    stop reading after that.

  61. ngnr says:

and by the way… Chuck Schuldiner should be in every f***** list of this kind.

  62. tiagón says:

    Iommi @ #86 ???
I don’t care at all these ranks and lists, but HELL, I WILL buy and BURN a RS mag after that.

  63. Aaron R A says:

It’s kind of mind-boggling the lack of attention that is given to the guitarists from Protest The Hero, The Human Abstract, Savatage, Psyopus, Necrophagist, and Children of Bodom. Not to mention the entire lack of recognition for John 5 and Joe Stump.

  64. dthrasher says:

Alexi Laiho, Jim Malone, Jari Maenpaa, Chuck Shuldiner, and Dave Mustaine are necessary to any best guitarists list, amongst others. Fuck Kirk Hammet and his shitty solos with that annoying wah pedal in every single one.

  65. @ezra: You are absolutely right about Walter from Quicksand. He would fall under my love of rhythm guitar players line of reasoning, not to mention his voice and frontman skills are incredible. That whole package thing again.

  66. Muttweiler says:

What about George Lynch? Didn’t everyone playing guitar in the 80’s want that tone?
Criss Oliva shredded like a motherfucker!
Alex Skolnick gets much love but we’re all forgetting Eric Peterson
Al Pitrelli: from Asia to Megadeth and many places in between.
Jeff Loomis once had a tryout for Megadeth when he was 16. (imagine the possibilities)
Glen Tipton and K.K. Downing. Metal Gods!
John Schaffer makes that chewy riffage the whole family will enjoy.
Chris Degarmo. How bad has Queensryche sucked since his departure?
Rich Ward from Stuck Mojo and Fozzy. Kind of like a more clever Zakk Wylde without the incessant squeal. (I do like the squeal actually)
    John Sykes is severely underrated.

  67. OT: Is anyone else having difficulty typing in your comments here? I keep having letters drop off, kind of like the typewriter key “E” in Stephen King’s Misery.

  68. billybob says:

    Jimi Hendrix
    Jimmy Page
    Tony Iommi
    Randy Rhodes
    Eddie Van Halen
    Devin Townsend
    Jed Simon
    Mikael Akerfeldt
    Peter Lindgren
    Fredrik Akesson
    Adam Jones
    James Hetfield
    Kirk Hammett
    Dave Mustaine
    Alex Skolnick
    Eric Peterson
    Willie Adler
    Mark Morton
    Dimebag Darrell
    Frederik Thordendal
    Martin Hagstrom
    Luke Hoskin
    Tim Millar
    Jeff Loomis
    Joe Satriani
    Peter Wichers
    Jesper Stromblad
    Bjorn Gelotte
    Dino Cazares
    Zakk Wylde
    Dan Weller
    Pin Pinney

  69. Another Opinion says:

    Robert Fripp. Yes. Metal.

  70. Spawn of Seitan says:

    Mustaine and Hammett \m/

  71. Drakodan says:

I’m actually really surprised no-one’s mentioned Herman Li and Sam Totman yet. Inb4 they suck live, their live performance has been completely revamped.

But anyway, I’d like to see Michael Romeo from Symphony X on here. Amongst people like John Petrucci, Peter Wichers from Soilwork and Muhammed from Necrophagist, to name a few.

And he’s not exactly metal, but Matt Bellamy is fucking amazing.

  72. Umbrifer says:

According to RS, Gilmour ranks at #82. That alone makes the list worthless.

It looks like they asked a blues fan to pick his favorites… Meh :|.

  73. God says:

I second the motion to place Morbid Angels Trey Azagthoth (whatever the spelling) near the top of the list.
Adrian Smith and Dave Murray, obviously.
Kerry King and Jeff Hanneman (yes, we know, they can’t solo, but they do have great rythems and evil harmonies, and work very well together…kinda like the Smith/Murray of thrash)
Mille Petroza of Kreator, great fucking riffs.
And one guy who never, ever gets mentioned, but is absolutely phenomenal and unique: Gelal Necrosodomy (Alex) of Grand Belial’s Key and Arghoslent.
VERY underated guitarist, he write the most amazing riffs. Look it up, fuckers!
