R.I.P. ADRIAN BROMLEY, 1971 – 2008

Monday, December 8th, 2008 at 4:03pm by MetalSucks

We just found out that our good friend Adrian Bromley has passed away from pneumonia. And we were literally just talking about him yesterday.

Most of you reading this probably won’t know Adrian. He wrote for a number of publications and websites over the years, and founded his own underground extreme magazine, Unrestrained! We met him when he was working as the in-house publicist at The End Records; he was a garrulous, funny motherfucker, one of those dudes who gave shit as well as he took it, and an industry insider who believed in MetalSucks and gave us access when we were still struggling to get anyone to take us seriously.

Adrian left The End earlier this year and was flying solo, doing PR for bands like Giant Squid and Master. We know it’s a cliché, but his death leaves a serious void in the scene. He had just turned 37 years old. Even as we type this, we can’t quite believe it’s real.

Adrian, wherever you are, we raise our shot glasses to you, dude. You are already missed.

Adrian has done and continued to do more for metal than most people even realize. He was one of the (gentle) giants of our community. I’ll missing working with him. My thoughts go out to his family, friends, and loved ones.

  7. BBG says:

Shit. Condolences to his family…. Miss you bro.

  8. Holy crap. It seem like he just IMd me five minutes ago! Adrian was a rare breed — a hard working, persistent dude who worked his bands so vigorously not because he was a publicist, but because he loved metal and wanted to share his knowledge and passion with as many people as possible. Not a week would pass when he wasn’t trying to convince me how great a band I never heard of was. And more of than not, he was right. Thanks Adrian for turning me on to Klabautamann, Kosmos, Giant Squid and numerous others. RIP, my friend.

  9. A pillar of the scene – he will be missed. RIP.

Adrian is going to be missed so much by so many people. The entire Toronto metal scene is devastated by this loss, and shows won’t be the same without him. I’m so happy to have been able to down beers with him while rocking the fuck out. RIP Adrian, we’ll never forget you.

  13. This is some really sad news. He was a great dude to work with and always did everything he could to promote the music he loved. From myself and everyone at Century Media and Nuclear Blast, our sincerest condolences. RIP Adrian.

  14. bram says:

Adrian was a stand-up dude who’s enthusiasm and love of metal will be missed. December 8 is the worst fucking day for music ever.

  15. Jesse says:

Well I can’t say I ever knew or heard of the dude, but it definitely sounds like metal lost a good friend today.

Condolences to his family and all of you guys.

  16. Adrian was a great friend , a real Believer in the music he loved and a Fierce partner in our journey to return to the scene. He was our publicist and our friend. He did more for this music than anyone will ever know. I just talked to him Saturday night. He will be so sadly missed – I cannot express the sentiments in this posting – Just know that the scene is going to miss this man
and I will miss my friend.

This guy was one of the best metal writers around…RIP

  18. Manfred says:

    LOL at PM’s comment

  19. Karl J says:

I only picked up a couple of copies of Unrestrained! over the years, but it was a good metal mag – and Adrian’s imprint was all over the thing – I swear he must have written three quarters of the text inside. So sorry to hear the news. We salute you, bro…RIP

  20. Cinemetal says:

I wrote for Adrian and Adam at Unrestrained! for a short while. Long before and afterwards, I read his reviews and interviews at that ‘zine, Metal Maniacs and who knows how many others? Requiem/Eclipse? Terrorizer? I can’t even remember, such was his ubiquity. I can still remember the first time I met him, at Milwaukee Metalfest 2000, as well as the last time: at a Nachtmystium show last year.

There was never a more enthusiastic, generous and garrulous metal fan, writer and friend in the scene. Maybe I’m the only one who feels that way, but probably not.

December 7th, 8th and 13th are all turning into particularly sad dates on the metal calendar.

    Another yahrzeit, then.

  21. Ian Christe says:

Just seeing that photo I can practically smell Adrian coming at me with a mouthful of metal. He already had more than a lifetime’s worth of raging under his belt, and it wasn’t even half what he deserved.

  22. John Biscomb says:

I am truely shocked and saddened by this news, I was only speaking to him a few days ago… Adrian, rest in peace, my thoughts are with you and your family.

  23. PWBear says:

I only met Adrian once, we were both stuck back stage at Metalfest 2003 because of some dumbfuck’s screw-up with the guest list. He got in first…

It is cliche, but rarely is it more true there is a void in the scene today and it will be a while before its filled.

    RIP Adrian

  24. Magpie says:

    Sad news indeed :(

  25. Totally affable and helpful guy the couple times I worked with him. R.I.P. good sir Bromley.

  26. JPiona says:

Wow! I just read this news. I’m totally shocked. While I had not spoken to Adrian in sometime, I’m deeply saddened by this news. Adrian did PR for me while Lilitu was around on The End Records. He was always a positive person to be around, and quite funny. He came to see my band play numerous times, and we shared many drinks together. He is a loss to the metal community, may he rest in piece, wherever that is….

  27. Oscar says:

I had the pleasure of meeting Mr.Bromley while I interned for The End Records about 2 years back. Talking to him and getting to know his knowledge and views on the music he loved was defenetly one of the best experiences there. And was awsome enough to hook my gf up with a ticket to bamboozle.
    rest in peace Adrian

  28. Phil says:

Damn, just heard this. I did Sloth zine back in the late 90s, he and I had very similar tastes and were members of the mutual appreciation society, haha.

I hope he’s Headbanging in Valhalla!!!
