WILL OBAMA BAIL OUT BIG BUSINESS WITH BETTER TUNES?

It is with a heavy, cholesterol-afflicted heart that I report the news that Big Business has posted a new song to their Myspace page that kinda sorta sucks.

Taken from the forthcoming album Mind The Drift, “Gold and Final” sorely lacks the penetrating percussion, monstrously memorable bass riffage, and roaring/soaring vocals of Here Come The Waterworks, one of my favorite metal albums of 2007 (second only to The Austerity Program’s game-changing Black Madonna). If this is the change that Obama has promised to bring, then let me be the first to call for an immediate Big Business bailout!

Though their membership in the latest lineup of the Melvins has naturally occupied a great deal of their time, Coady Willis and Jared Warren have managed to keep Big Business intact all the while, filling the heretofore impermanent guitar spot with Toshi Kasai of Dale Crover’s Altamont project. “Gold and Final” demonstrates a softer side to the band that, unfortunately, does not suit Jared’s voice at all. The rest of this record can’t possibly be this wimpy, right? RIGHT?!! Anyway. the album is due out in April on Hydra Head, so I’ll try to reserve judgement until I actually have a copy of Mind The Drift to listen to. Still, I can’t help but thinking this is going to let me down even more than Nude With Boots.

maybe it’s just the crappy myspace stream quality and the higher quality version hits a bit harder

Glad someone else likes the Black Madonna record.

Definitely lacking the “oomph” that I have come to expect from Big Business. I don’t think the stream quality had anything to do with it. It just sounds like a weak tune. I dearly hope they have put the shittiest song on the record up first. I just don’t expect such a downhill slide to continue for the whole album.

I don’t mind the song itself. To me it sounds like they’re trying their best to accomodate Toshi’s guitars but haven’t quite figured out how to do it yet.

I quite like the song, actually. It sounds like it’s mixed strangely, however. This may not be the final mix/master of the song. Plus, it needs the context of the rest of the record. Having said that, I am very excited about this record.

you were let down by NWB, yet Kingdom of Sorrow was your top album of the year. yeah, whatever…

Man I’d love a hefty plate of ribs right now.

Having seen Big Business a few times recently, they have mostly been playing new stuff, and it sounds great live. I’m not worried at all.

And that’s no plate of ribs; it’s a steak from the Big Texan in Amarillo. bigtexan.com

The bass should sound better in the final mix (off myspace, which sucks.) I’m positive the song will sound much more awesome when you can hear the bass fully, because it’s slaying from what I can hear. I’m a fanboy but still, I’m banking this song fits better in the album flow than. The last album had plenty of slower bits with plenty of atmosphere.

    Hold out hope!

I’m glad I wasn’t the only one let down by “Nude With Boots”. Especially as a follow-up to the badassness of (a) Senile Animal…

I like it, it’s different and makes me want to listen again. And I can’t understand being let down by “Nude with Boots.”

  • Voodoo Trucker

Nude With Boots is pretty brilliant actually.

If you were disappointed by NWB, you’re ‘tarded.

The new Big Business song is indeed weak, though. I’ve seen ‘em perform it thrice live, and it’s not very good in that setting. Too much guitar. They should ditch Toshi, Big Business are better without weedy guitar riffs taking the focus off of the caveman basslines.

really? a bad review based on 1 song streaming on myspace? i don’t mind that ‘everyone’s a critic’, but at least have something to critique before dumping your ill-informed opinion out on the internet.

i’m gonna start a shitty blog where i review shitty reviews.
