METALLICA; OBSESSED WITH DEATH?

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009 at 9:45am by

This video, sent in by MS Maniac Shiver and posted by YouTube user docrock80, collects and counts every instance of the word or words relating to “death” in Metallica’s self-written studio albums. Words relating to “death” – i.e. “die”, “dying”, “deathly”, “dead”, etc. – appear 81 times in 99 original Metallica songs not including times these words are repeated in the same way during the choruses or verses.

Think Jaymz and Lars have a bit of a death obsession?

That’s pretty funny. It’s also fun to see if you can pick out which song each one came from. It’s tough because the video moves so fast.

Not to be a dick, but couldn’t you essentially do this with any metal band?
Pretty sure if you started looking at a Cannibal Corpse or Slayer, you’d get just as many references…

Time to add “published writer” to my CV.

You can relate it to other metal bands, except for the key difference that, at least in terms of Thrash, Metallica are considered the lightest of the bunch.
Of course you’re going to get references to death with Slayer, or Cannibal Corpse, just look at their names, to start with, haha. I think most in the interest in this comes from the fact that Lars and James look at themselves as better than other people, and still, 99 original songs, 81 references to death… that’s a lot for a band that borderlined new-age rock and hasn’t had a clue WTF they want to play for the last (nearly) 20 years. They kept consistant with one thing though..
    -and that’s DEATH!

What about the Slayer and the number of times they refer to war?

Huh? Most interest in this comes from it being a clever and skillful manipulation of the band’s music. Your opinion of Ulrich and Hetfield isn’t really relevant…

Sounds more to me like Metallica has a severe lack of lyric writing skills.

I’d like to see the dude do a Manowar vid with the amount of times the word ‘metal’ is mentioned – I counted 44 times in just ONE of their songs, although I can’t recall which one it was… too much metal perhaps.

  • Shiver

You can never have too metal.
