I HAVE NO CLEVER HEADLINE FOR THE TOMBS “GOSSAMER” VIDEO

Monday, February 2nd, 2009 at 1:00pm by Axl Rosenberg

Also, I don’t really understand the appeal of Tombs. I know they’re the hot shit right now so I guess I’ll hafta file ‘em under the “bands I just don’t get” column.

ANYWAY, Pitchfork.TV debuted the band’s new video, and I can say this: I think it’s very well shot, especially since I’m assuming they had a very, very limited budget. I wish the editing were a little more rhythmic, but since I’m not a fan of the band, this video really isn’t for me, so all the Tombs fans/would-be Spielbergs can tell me why I’m wrong in the comments section below.

What? You don’t like boring, repetitive 90 second intros followed by the same boring, repetitive riff repeated endlessly for the whole song?

  2. dick says:

I liked this song when Neurosis did it.

  3. joshc says:

you know, theres something to be said for long drawn out song structures if you can manage to build a mood. apparently no one told this band that second part. my god that was boring.

  4. Byron W. says:

    Wow, snooze-fest.

  5. Sammy says:

@ JoshC: You make a very good point. Long and drawn out doesn’t have to equal boring. Good “long” songs, in my opinion, draw the listener in, and usually have different chapters or parts to keep you interested. A repetitive riff doesn’t really fill that bill.

  6. Ryan says:

probably the same people who were talking shit about isis last week. if you don’t recognize this as an awesome song, too bad for you. cant wait for the album.

  7. Zac says:

The filter (smeared light) is so obviously an effect rendered in post that it’s distracting. I hate videos like this and films like this because they try to get by on a lack of visuals by presenting the audience with overbearing filter effects and color correction. Even then, there’s a correct way to use manipulation in post (go watch Dominic Hailstone’s work for Isis on the ‘Holy Tears’ video). I’m both a fan of Isis and a practicing filmmaker, and this video is not doing it for me.

  8. HairMetal says:

You don’t “get” Tombs, but I guess you do “get” Mr. Big

  9. John says:

Great, another decent subgenre for kids that can barely play their insturments to ruin.

  10. Conduit says:

Who cares about the video, cause if it isn’t a Snore Brodsky seizure fest it’s not worth Metalsucks time. As for standard band in a room playing the song videos go, it’s not too bad. Song was pretty good too, at least for people who “get” this kind of music. There’s plenty of texture all over it, but some variance in the drums and main riff would be good. As for Neur-Isis babies go, I’d say they’re worth the time, but it’s easier to judge with the whole album. From what I’ve heard from friends these dudes have a tremendous live show.

And John you’re just stupid, if you can’t play for shit and try a metalgaze outfit you get laughed away into obscurity. The “kids” you’re talking about will stick to their bree-core. Sure this post-metal stuff all sounds easy to play, but good luck finding your structure, tone, and hundreds of pedals. There’s a reason Neurosis are the kings and Isis its herald.

this is “alt-rock” plain and simple.

  12. musicalsnob says:

I thought the song was pretty good in the vein of planes mistaken for stars, coliseum ,And deathkiller? I would have to say alot better then most bands today who are rehashing the 90’s death metal genre ie lamb of god, trivium (minus the ghastly melodic vocals to stir up commercial sales). At least tombs is tryyna take heavy music in a different direction, trynna create something new, something we haven’t heard before. Not music that we have already heard in the 90’s.

  13. Great song from an incredible record. There’s a lot of nuance to this song lost on many people’s ears, I imagine. I’ve listened to ‘Winter Hours’ easily twenty times already and it just keeps getting better.

  14. gnarlk says:

    tombs >(x1000) gojira

  15. gnarlk says:

also, any site that openly felches crap like protest the hero can lick my left nut.

  16. handshitter says:

Am I the only one, who noticed, that this is the third post in row, having “ANYWAY” as the first word of the second paragraph followed by a “This is kinda sucks-ass-ful stuff” first one, and having a video in it?

Shit dude, I really used to like your diverge >style< of talking shit.

  17. Mike says:

It seems like you also don’t “get” a lot of stuff like this. I recall you also not getting Isis, Neurosis, Cult of Luna, (nice review of Eternal Kingdom though) and more then likely Pelican (I know that City of Echoes wasn’t real big with anyone either though) and Jucifer. ( I’m not 100% sure if that was from this site or not). Nothing wrong with that though. I know a ton of people who are well educated in metal and still don’t want anything to do with the aforementioned bands. I’m also not even sure where I’m going with this either.

…I also don’t see why bands like The Sword, Red Fang, Priestess, Torche, Baroness, and Kylesa aren’t as popular as they should be…

    …I like Tombs.

  18. Reaper-X says:

    Pitchfork doesn’t like good music.

  19. these seans says:

I enjoyed the video, but I also love the song. a great warm up to the rest of the album which will definitely be in my “top 10″ at the end of the year. (very comfortable saying that this early on too)

  20. What I dig about Tombs is that they’re approaching “heavy” in a totally different way than most heavy metal bands. It’s all about density of sound instead of riff structure. Not like they’re the first band to take that approach, but they’re pretty awesome at it.

  21. Will says:

I can see how some people thought that was pretty boring, but I enjoyed it. I thought it had enough textures in the music to make it interesting.

  22. dale says:

    that sucks

  23. musicalsnob says:

anyways!!! why is a video so important? what ever happened to appreciating music for what it is??? not a fucking narcissistic self portrait of how fricken cool the band looks or seems.

  24. MetalRod says:

    this sounds like the economy…

  25. john c says:

wow, its funny how people get so worked up over a band playing music. i wonder how many of you criticizing these guys actually pick up instruments and write music so that rad labels like relapse want to sign you, how many of you work your asses off to go on tour and do something awesome? you dont do shit, and thats why you sit around bitching about people who do. tombs is a radical live band, and they are really nice dudes. i didnt have enough money at one of their shows and they gave me a shirt and lp. they are right on in my book.

oh, and this website openly has advertising for victory records.

    puke.
