THE CULT OF DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN

Of the MetalSucks Mansion inhabitants only Gary Suarez was (reportedly) man enough to attend the shit-hot Dillinger Escape Plan ticket (w/ new drummer!) at The Studio room of NYC’s Webster Hall on Saturday night, part of a brief 3-date East Coast DEP jaunt. While I was happily sleeping off the sedative effects of a 10-course outdoor Snow BBQ (that brisket… holy fuck!!), the video warriors of Metal Injection snuck in a hand-held video camera and captured 5 songs, among them a cover of hometown heroes Living Colour’s now-classic “Cult of Personality.” Unlike previous DEP cover experiments that sailed right over the heads of Warped Tour attendees not even born by the time F.U.C.K. came out let alone 1984, the hipper and older NYC audience lapped that shit right out of Greg Puciato’s bodyglove. Watch as the band tears the house down and Ben Weinman rips through Vernon Reid’s metal-jazz-gasm solo like Vince Neil through a new pair of jeans.

    Ceth: Totally disagree there–as much as I worship Corey Glover, I give Greg credit for being more concerned with carrying the tune than showing off his vocal chops. Easily one of the most exciting shows I’ve ever been lucky enough to catch.

    Nice cover! Greg really throws his voice though, he just needs to control his breath a bit more, as far as air through vocal chords is concerned, less is more! Vibrate yo’ head mang!

    Yeah, I was there. I left a little early, but caught the majority of the set, including “Cult Of Personality.” That venue, however, is fucking awful. There are terrible sight-lines and the show sold out.

    Also, I ran into probably the douchiest douchebag I’ve ever encountered at a concert, which is pretty surprising given the number of shows I’ve been to in the past 15 years and considering how generally cool metalheads are at concerts.

    Saturday was my first dillinger show, and i must say that they put on the greatest live performance I have ever seen. The energy was ridiculous, honestly there you can’t get much better.

    Honestly, i think pucciato could stop the music and take a massive shit on stage and people would still think it’s great…….oh wait, he has done that and everybody did think it was cool….Strange things in this world. Again i do think the band killed it on this cover and did an excellent job but i think his vocals are very sub par on it.

    Yeah there was some off notes in there, but even for the most accomplished metal singer, in a set, screaming takes alot from your singing voice. Add to that being wiped from jumping and running around and then a monitor system that maybe sub par, and well your gonna be a lil off key. I give him all the cred for tackling that song.

    Theres only one vocalist who i never heard get pitchy doing live stuff and thats Mike from Opeth, but then again, Mike is GOD.
