MESHUGGAH + CYNIC + THE FACELESS = ERECTION TONIGHT!!!

Thursday, February 19th, 2009 at 11:44am by Vince Neilstein

Saying we’re not beyond stoked for the Meshuggah / Cynic / The Faceless pummeling we’re going to receive tonight would be like saying Wes Borland didn’t re-join Limp Bizkit for the moolah (it’s the nookie… yeah… that’s it). I mean this is pretty much the ultimate prog-metal erectionfest of 2009, whatwith the certain non-metal-itude of this year’s Prog Nation tour, amirite?

Lucky for you, Meshuggah and Cynic have been keeping their own online video channel from the tour. Check this clip of Meshuggah performing “Bleed” in Hollywood, and scroll through the arrows to watch Tomas Haake sound check footage, a Cynic performance, tour diaries and more. Listen to and download two free mp3s below while you’re at it.

Side note: certain MS staffers are still looking for tickets to this. If you got extras, email vince AT metalsucks DOT net.

I saw this tour 2 days ago! F’n amazing! I recommend not standing right in front of the stage unless you want a 90% drum-focused sound, they play with no amps on stage. All the guitars and bass are modeled with Rack-mounts so it’s all fed through the PA. Sounded great further back! Check out my videos from the Toronto show!

(WARNING: Turn down your speakers, my apologies for the occasional blurriness I have no control with focus or zoom on my little hand-held. I have 3 other vids from the show also, one of Cynic)

Just saw them the other night in Toronto at the Phoenix, amazingly brutal show! Meshuggah are crazy good live.

  3. Senior Swanky says:

I didnt know the show was sold out!
Where’s everyone going for drinks beforehand?

  4. Moleman says:

was suppose to see these guys tommorow in MD. We forgot to order tickets and we found out monday the tickets were sold out. FUCK

  5. vitruvianApe says:

That Hollywood show was fucking amazing, been to a few shows at hob but that was the first truly sold out show i’d seen. And when bleed started the place exploded, I ended up right behind the soundboard and i think pieces of my melted face are still there, wish more people woulda showed cynic some love tho.

  6. hackman says:

was at the show in hollywood and everything vitruvian said is dead on. all 3 bands were incredible and besides lamb of god (with the faceless, shiiiit) last december, meshuggah’s the only other band i’ve seen recently where people literally just lose their shit. and what kind of band is around for 20 years and their most recent album produces what will surely be one of their signature songs for years to come?! have fun guys, roll it up extra fat for me!

  7. iolanach says:

I hate you guys. I hate you guys to death.

  8. Eric says:

Was it just me or did the audience seem to not receive Cynic well? In Des Moines it seemed like they ended the set early and they didn’t look too happy to be playing.

  9. Nate says:

WOO GOING TO THIS TONIGHT IN NYC!!

    Leaving in like 20 mins!!

Does Faceless play first? I haven’t heard much about them on this tour, but I’ll post my impressions afterwards.

    PEACE OUT!

  10. DeathMetalDave says:

I’m with Eric. I said it on Twitter…Cynic bores to tears. I saw the show in San Francisco, and they were just horribly misplaced between two utterly brutal acts that just slayed. It was just awful. People were shouting out “MESHUGGAH!!” in the middle of their set. Not well received at all I’d say.

  11. DeathMetalDave says:

The Faceless plays first, and you DO NOT want to miss that. They are so damn tight live, it’s incredible.

  12. Malacoda says:

Dave – I was also at the SF show, and they were received plenty well. People shouted for Meshuggah during the changing period, when everything took a while. People also shouted “WE LOVE YOU PAUL” in the middle of the Cynic set. Everyone tranced out, I would not have picked Cynic along with Faceless and Meshuggah, but they were still great.

  13. Steve-o says:

Cynic was pretty well received at the St. Paul show I attended last Friday. It was not exciting like Meshuggah and The Faceless were exciting, but for someone like me who’s been listening to them since “Focus” came out in the early 90’s, it was exciting. They’re different, that’s for sure.

The Faceless and Meshuggah were incredible.

  14. RandyxJames says:

    Seeing them all tomorrow!!!

  15. billybob says:

I really enjoyed Cynic’s set in Toronto. They’re all great musicians. Their style is quite a bit different than the other bands on this bill though, so I can imagine some fans not really digging them. I think Cynic would fit well on a bill with, say, Opeth, 3, Between the Buried and Me, or Dream Theater. Prog Nation anyone?

  16. JamieLees says:

The thing is, you want to see cynic when your tripping cos you’ll bliss out completely. That crisp, beautiful wall of sound is overwhelming on shrooms. Meshuggah’s also great tripping but i wouldn’t go and see them tripping cos fuck me…all those scatty white lights and shit? Anyone who said Cynic are boring are probably silly knuckleheads who can’t listen to anything that aint heavy. Thats elitist and really fucking retarded imo. But still, each to their own. Personally, I think Cynic are the absolute shit, as are meshuggah and the faceless.
