BEFORE BRIAN POSEHN, SAM KINISON WAS THE MOST METAL COMEDIAN IN THE WORLD

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009 at 2:03pm by Axl Rosenberg

I haven’t watched any of Sam Kinison’s old stand-up in years, so I have no idea how his work holds up – but when I was a younger, I thought he was just about the funniest human being that had ever lived, and when he died, I was really, really upset about it.

I heard recently that HBO is making a TV movie about Kinison’s life – which is why I was thinking about him again – and I suddenly remembered Kinison’s video for his cover of “Wild Thing.”

Today the video seems vastly inferior to Brian Posehn’s “Metal by Numbers,” because a) that song is actually about metal, b) that song isn’t a cover, and c) that song doesn’t have Tommy Lee in its video. But at the time, this clip was the shit – I mean, in addition to the aforementioned Lee, it also features Slash, Billy Idol, Richie Sambora, members of Aerosmith and Ratt, and Jessica Hahn’s tits.

Lest we forget, they also sampled his voice when he’s yelling at Rodney Dangerfield from “Back to School” in the song “I’m the Man” by Anthrax. That also sort of goes along with your comparison to Posehn, since Scott Ian plays the guitar in that song. I miss this guy too.

There’s an australian comedian who’s getting a bit of press at the moment called Steve Hughes, who’s always referencing his love for death metal in his shows. So his routines aren’t quite as metal orientated as Posehn, and not everybody’s cup of tea, but he’s still pretty damned funny.

So far he’s done a few support slots for well known british comedians over here in the Uk and I’m not too sure of any he’s done elsewhere in the world, but he’s worth checking out anyway.

Sam Kinison was a big influence on Bill Hicks, especially his style of yelling. Sam was pretty hilarious dude, but a touch racist in my opinion. Did you know he used to be an Evangelistic Preacher?? Crazyness

thank goodness we’re past the era where the women in videos looked like the men. With jumbo boobs.

    Other metal comedians:

Mitch Hedberg: mentioned being in a death metal band that was really laid back and called “injured”.
