While I do agree with Grim Kim that that may be a bit of an overstatement, that album, while not necessarily contrived or immature, does not hold up on repeat listens. I listened to that album once or twice since I got my hands on "Two Hunters"; I have no desire to go back to it now (the Weakling accusation was spot on, though: the buildup in "A Shimmering Radiance" is a pretty blatant rip-off of "Dead as Dreams").

But good review, though. I still personally dig "Two Hunters" more, but like anything this band has put out, time will tell.

"Their debut, Diadem of 12 Stars, was, unfortunately, a contrived and immature effort."

Oh what the goddamn hell. Do not agree with that at ALL.

@ Satan Rosenbloom

I emailed WIITR and just got confirmation that Ross is the touring bass player and he was not on the album. Sorry about that inaccuracy, but thanks for pointing it out!

Excellent review. I'm going to give this one some more time before I review it, but my initial impression is that it's not as interesting as Two Hunters. Or maybe I'll just go back to listening to Weakling...

I am slowly falling in love with this one. It's not as immediately inspiring as Two Hunters, mostly because that album blew me away instantly, and this one is similar in the superficial ways; WITTR keep getting closer to the violence of that Weakling album, but like you point out, the compositions just aren't as strong. Yet.

One thing though, are you sure that Ross Sewage is on this album? I thought the only new member on this and Malevolent Grain was Will Lindsay from Middian, who played bass for them live for a while.

Great review!

'Though they’ve come under the hipster radar, which has scared off some of the leather jackets and bullet-belts, the new album is more likely to appeal to the latter'

Hahahah.............Thank you sir.
