NIN VS. DEP

Thursday, March 5th, 2009 at 3:00pm by Axl Rosenberg

So last week Dillinger Escape Plan’s Greg Puciato and Ben Weinman got up on stage in Australia with Nine Inch Niles to help out with “Wish,” a song DEP had previously covered. Up ’til now, all we’ve seen is shitty cell phone capture of the performance – but now NIN have posted something considerably higher quality on their web site.

Not much to say here – you just gotta love it when there’s so many great musicians on one stage.

Saw this earlier today. Pretty kick-ass. According to DEP’s myspace blog, they also played a version of “Wish” with ALL of DEP on stage. Hopefully we’ll get a high quality vid of that, too.

  2. Byron W. says:

This is so cool. Hopefully we’ll see what Trent is doing from other bands in the near future..

  3. palinaborted says:

Why doesn’t anybody else in the metal and rock n’ roll community jump on the bandwagon of NIN’s general awesomeness and do this kind of shit. Trent has by far the best website of any band and he keeps his fans incredibly informed. Why don’t other bands put themselves on this kind of level? Ignorance? Lack of money? Apathy? If you’re making music you should find ANY way to bring it to the masses. Even if it’s something as absolutely god awful as Hollywood Undead. I will kick you in the teeth for listening to them but I will most certainly defend your right to find and listen to their music.

    HD is sweet.

  5. Blow Me says:

DEP suck balls. That is all.

  6. crapmcpoopin says:

I concur. DEP is on the worst bands I have ever seen live. I saw them once back in the day before they were the “metal darlings” they are now. Then I saw them again at KSE show, and boy was the crowd bored. I was hoping he fell off the speaker and died.

  7. Brett says:

Have you ever cum before you even get a chance to get a boner?

  8. Shanetera says:

Fuck this video, I saw DEP cover this song at Hellfest 2002 WITH their original singer Dimitri as well as Greg. Plus they covered a Justin Timberlake song and a Slayer song. The only thing beating that is Greg throwing shit on people. Priceless.

  9. Glenn says:

Why is there fake ambient crowd noise under the opening introduction? There’s Trent, the actual crowd, and this low-level constant cheering which simply isn’t “real.” Weird.

  10. Jimmy says:

Two of my favorite bands performing together. Holy fuck.

  11. Chris says:

wow, theres a lot of negative feedback for DEP…im guessing if it was the frontman of Lamb Of God,or Corey Taylor you dueches would be pleased, well they suck ass & so do you! (if you werent so simple-minded towards metal, then you’d realize this band actually has MASSIVE potential!)-amazing footage!

  12. Strungout says:

Trent Reznor is the manliest of men.

not saying anything negative or postive about DEP but how long does a band have to be around before you consider them to be past “having potential” DEP has been around for a pretty good while now, I think they have reached some level of their potential and are a pretty well established band at this point. They have been around for over a decade at this point. If you werent so simple minded you would realize Iron Maiden has MASSIVE potential :)

    Battle of the Biceps!

  15. b-dizzle says:

All you DEP haters are faggots

@Glenn: That’s part of the song, and it’s just static noise, not crowd

  16. ferocious_fetus says:

most people don’t like Dillinger at first because most humans are idiots and fear/hate what they don’t understand.

I myself thought the band was just noise when I first heard their music 5 years ago. After nearly getting my head taken off at one of their shows in 04′, something clicked and they’ve become my favorite band ever since.

  17. Holopanen says:

    Simply put: Awesome.

  18. Revrant says:

Oh the DEP “haters” are faggots, novel idea.

ferocious: Rather people who aren’t meatheads don’t appreciate DEP, it is the epitome of meatheaded music, they are to meathead guitar-fuckers what Jesus is to Rush Limbaugh.

Suck VS. Suck, how the hell do you choose between the two? Which one has more shirts at Hot Topic?

    Clear winner there.

  19. SonOF says:

    Wow, that was awesome.

    as for this fool:

“Rather people who aren’t meatheads don’t appreciate DEP, it is the epitome of meatheaded music, they are to meathead guitar-fuckers what Jesus is to Rush Limbaugh.”

    ^
That is a completely asinine statement. “Meatheads” like DEP? Are you out of your mind? DEP are way too technical and abstract to attract a “meathead” following. Any simpleton “meatheads” that have just a passing interest in heavy music would like (I assume) easily accessible, commercial acts like Disturbed, Drowing Pool, Korn, Kid Rock, Godsmack, Linkin Park; perhaps even Lamb of God, Pantera, Slipknot, or Trivium (not saying these last few bands are necessarily bad) if they branched out a bit.

And as for the last Hot Topic comment, I’m not even sure how to approach that one. Are you implying that DEP and NIN are gimmicky, flash in the pan, throw-away acts for teens? NIN has been around for like 20 years. As for DEP, even before they got somewhat popular commercially, they were hugely loved and respected in the underground (almost 8-10 years ago).

I don’t know why I am wasting my time arguing with this type of garbage anyhow.

  20. Malacoda says:

    *Nine Inch Nails
    not Nine Inch Niles

  21. Isn’t it beautiful?!? I so thought that DEP would end up opening for NIN in the states, but Tom Morello is tagging along instead. It’s good to be a NIN fan.

  22. I love this video.
Been a fan of both bands for a long time and Trent is one cool dude.
The thing that gets me is DEP is capable of writing songs that could
have massive appeal to the commercial audience, but they choose not too.
You see glimmers of this in songs like Black Bubblegum or Setting Fire to Sleeping Giants.
Even the song Panasonic Youth has a 15 second breakdown that if it was
stretched out, would be a huge mosh pit starter.
I gotta give DEP credit for doing what they truely want to do as artists,
but I only hope that when it’s all said and done, they are happy with
the levels their careers has reached the day they’re done make music.
In the meantime watching people fight over whether the band sucks or not
is hilarity! They obviously suck! I mean, they are mentioned on metalsuck.net
    Instant Suck Verification right there!

Seriously, love it or hate it, it’s music.
It’s not middle of the road, corporate approved, safe for the masses bullshit.
That stuff is where we should focus our hatred.

  23. Anselmowitz says:

They are great musicians, real argument is sober Trent vs 90’s Trent.

  24. Devin says:

I respect everyone on that stage as musicians, mainly Reznor, but I just thought it was a gay video. Don’t really like DEP at all…

  25. Strungout says:

@Answelmowitz: I grew up with 90’s trent but I have to say lately the things I’ve seen from him have been amazing and he continues to be one of the classiest(couldn’t think of a better word, but I think ‘classy’ does a fair enough job) in music. Unfortunately, the last few NIN albums haven’t been as good as NIN early stuff(in my opinion) but it is still great music.

  26. Tyler says:

    DEP’s singer sucks.

  27. Revrant says:

    Seconded Tyler, seconded.

Ah, I love sheep, they are endlessly amusing.

“abstract”, yes, screaming about how bad you want pussy to the lightning-fire technical nuclear bomb guitar signatures is “abstract”, or perhaps, it’s just a technically proficient and talented version of the aforementioned Linkin Park.

Meatheaded in that they can only grasp one aspect of the music, the technical skill, indeed at least some of the bands you mentioned aren’t about that sole, low-minded thing, DEP are.

Oh and kudos for bashing a bunch of big bands, you didn’t appear sheepish at all, “Hip to bash popular bands” is not you, allow me to offer a rough translation of that sentence in lieu of a nearby woolen friend.

    “Baa.” =)

I was implying NIN is gimmicky and gets eaten up by counter culture sheep the world over and is plastered all over every Hot Topic the world over – hence “clear winner” in that category.

I love this sheep, “somewhat popular commercially” really? Wow, when did that happen? I haven’t been up to date since the day before, I suppose it is indeed possible they’ve broken the 15k album sales barrier before then, or somehow been on a tour without making enemies of everyone for their excessive haughtiness and machismo.

I know why I’m wasting my time with this sheep, he makes me laugh, and thus it isn’t time wasted.

    @ Revrant-

    TL;DR.

Your pretension is showing, you should wear a shirt.

  29. Revrant says:

    TS;DR.(Too stupid; didn’t read).

  30. jason says:

Anyone who thinks that DEP is only capable of noisy guitar wanking has obviously not listened to their last two albums. I would implore doubters to listen to “mouths of ghosts” off their latest and see what I mean. Thoughtful, well crafted, and miles removed from the typical skronky, mathy histrionics of that particular sub-genre. Like ‘em or not, DEP is one of a kind.

  31. I wonder who would win in an arm wrestling contest.

  32. Revrant says:

That’s a good representation of the unique meathead mentality I was speaking of, honestly who gives a shit about what one instrument does? If the rest of the package is shit, that means it is too, if you can only appreciate one aspect of the music, that makes you a meathead.

  33. jason says:

Well REV, you are certainly entitled to your opinion, and I wasn’t suggesting that you should run out and buy the DEP discography. I just don’t understand why it all seems so personal to you. I’d like to think that the point of these forums is to be able to discuss what you like, what you don’t like, why you don’t like it etc. If you were to say ” I don’t like their music AND I think the guys in the band are dicks because….” it would make more sense to me than just throwing around sweeping generalizations and insults. Just sayin…

  34. Revrant says:

Well given DEP were my first concert experience and I left it having less faith in the genre I love as a whole, you can imagine I do take personally.

These are not forums, these are comments, not a terrible idea though, hintity hint hint Axl.

Very rarely does anyone “discuss” anything here, I’m not entirely sure where you’re getting the Lennon view of MetalSucks, but it isn’t reality. I don’t go hurling them around, but I do throw around a lot of generalizations with DEP, mainly because their audience is so small and easy to confine.

Insults are our bread and butter though, so you might find the site a bit sour if you don’t care for them. :)

  35. jason says:

I have been a reader of this post for quite some time, although I rarely post comments. I don’t have a problem with witty, cutting remarks or even the obligatory “(insert your fav band) sucks-type comments, but some of yours seem to come from a different place and come across a little more acerbic than most.
At any rate, I wanna play too! So…
Please thank your manager at Cinnabun for me for allowing you to go to the internet cafe across the food court so you could explain the difference between a forum and comments :)

  36. Revrant says:

Nothing like waking up to this, yes, and I’m rather sure I’ve been a reader for just as long. =)

I daresay they don’t, I’ve seen far worse comments than my own, I think the reason the unwise single me out is rather my consistent dissent as opposed to the intensity or severeness of my comments, perhaps it’s that “dissent” that skews your opinion and others as well.

I’m not entirely sure if that was supposed to be an insult or just some type of smart remark, but given I have my personally built computer sitting here on Comcast, I’m not sure what it means.

All the same, you’re “welcome”, it isn’t often you get to tell a person this is not a forum, what with the phrase “comment” slathered all over the submission system.

  37. jason says:

Fair enough my friend, fair enough. All in good fun. It’s just that you seem to be a reasonably intelligent person, so it surprises me to see you engage some of the internet retards in what could only be described as pointless quibbling. It’s hard to NOT be drawn in by such sometimes, I know.
Anyway, try to put your deep-seated grudge aside for just a few minutes and check out the song I mentioned. You don’t have to tell anyone if you actually like it:)

  38. Revrant says:

Hoo boy, and they call me pretentious, that was a little hard to sit through, though by far the least pretentious thing I’ve had to hear in regard to metal.

Ever tried to sit through fucking Dream Theater?

    Jesus biscuit baking Christ, man.

I love to engage in that sort of thing, what am I supposed to do? Go browse DeviantArt and challenge myself intellectually in their music forums with avant garde discussions on the intricacies of some band I’ve never heard of/hate and the obvious use of synthesizers in modern music being abhorrent to classically tuned ears?

I may seem a bit pretentious, but I have yet to be smug and self important, my cousin on the other hand, he does exactly that.

Oh, and here’s a shocker, he loves jazz, and when the one guy breaks into a totally random sax solo with no prompting and no one but those playing laugh – he laughs with them.

  39. jason says:

Kudos to you for giving it a shot anyway…more than most might have done in the same situation. Keep your mind open, even it that entails enduring noodly drivel like Dream Theater from time to time:) Cheers.

  40. Revrant says:

Had not checked back until now, being a metal, but not metalcore, fan, and listening to most of the stuff on here, I’d like to think I keep it open enough without having anything fall out to become the Zombie platter.

    Cheers indeed.

  41. Patrick says:

    @revrant-

you’re a fucking faggot, dude. go dress up as a knight and play d&d. you obviously dont know shit about music.

  42. Revrant says:

rur rur rur rur faggot rur rur rur nerd rurururrrr.

Why don’t you go back to beating up twelve year olds like a good bully and leave thinking to those with sentience and a little more sapience?
