Maybe I’m missing something; even if you don’t like Trivium’s music, I’m not aware of any incident that should make Heafy worthy of the Durstian levels of hatred people have towards the dude.
To that end: Metal Underground posted the below video of Heafy breaking up a fight from the stage at a show last week. I’m sure someone will say “Well, it’d be way cooler if he’d jumped into the crowd to break up the fight,” but we all know that that person is legally retarded, so whatever.

He gets hatred directed towards him because he’s an arrogant cock. Dave Mustaine looks like a humble human being sometimes when compared to Heafy.
And a buddy of mine also showed me an article/interview from a magazine or website that quoted Matt Heafy saying that he didn’t care about meeting fans and doesn’t want to talk to them. He basically said “Buy our albums and shirts and leave us the fuck alone”
At Sounds of the Underground 2006, after their set they went to the bar area to sit down and have a drink, but had a bunch of security and other people associated with the band form a huge circle/barrier around them to prevent people from saying hi or seeing them.
I will say that it’s cool he split shit up, and give him kudos on now looking like Kirk Hammet, but to answer the question on the Heafy bashing – the problem is the fact that his attitude is piss poor.When they first got signed, and were just starting to tour, Matt was already acting like a douche of Axl Rose-type proportions.Yeah, Trivium signed to Roadrunner when they were like 19, and at the time it was big shit since RR was reaping the benefits of being the top dogs as the metal revival was peaking, but the kid is not bigger than his idols.Yeah I’vee cracked abut Trivium being on Metallica’s dicks, but Paolo is pretty chill from the few times I had spoken to him, and maybe they have eased off the egos, as I’ve heard from some people, but that is basically the reason most people hate on the dude.
Matt Heafy sounds a lot like Dane Cook when hes just talking.

Heafy went through a stage of letting it all go to his head – and he did start acting like a bit of a arrogant dick. He was young and it’s not that suprising. Certain publications dubbing the band ‘the next Metallica’ didn’t help to keep the go in check I suppose.
It seems like he’s become more grounded now though – as if he became aware of it.
I’ve seen Trivium twice. once in ‘05 and once in ‘07. Both times Matt and the rest of the band were cool as hell and went out of there way to talk to the fans so I really can’t say I’ve ever seen him act like a dick.
Anthony, I would really like to know what article you are refering to where Matt Heafy tells the fans to “buy our albums and shirts and leave us the fuck alone”. I highly doubt that is printed anywhere. Even if he thought that, any sane human being would never say that in an interview, it’s just stupid.
Reminds me of seeing Jamey Jasta with Kingdom of Sorrow. He stopped the show to have the mosh pit participants look for a guy’s lost wedding ring, asking whoever found it to please pass it over to the guy who lost it. And damned if someone didn’t find the thing one minute later and indeed give it to the guy. Gave me a whole new level of respect for the Jasta.
As for Heafy, color me ignorant. I’ve never heard or read of any dickish behavior from him at all. He’s a little serious at times, I supposed, but that’s it.
I don’t get all the hatred either. I like me some Trivium from time to time.
Heafy seems nice. Breaking up fights and he wrote that song about Matthew Sheppard, raising awareness to homophobia and hate crime.

After watching the roadrunner united dvd for the 2nd time last week, I couldn’t help but chuckle when Rob Flynn rips the mic from Matt Heafy’s hands during Davidian, leaving Matt to just stand on stage in shock from the douchebaggery of Mr. Flynn. Just gave me that feeling Rob was thinking “This is my fucking song little kid, give me that damn mic”.
i know someone whos met Mat Heafy 4 times and says his realy nice and quite shy, she also said Corey and Paolo are relaxed easy going guys or something along them lines
I think i have the true summary. heafy handled it well, trivium still sucks though
I think the live shows leave something to be desired vocally, especially when he was still shrieking like a banshee in bass, now he understands he cant scream and sing at the same time so good for him. Great stuff musically, I’ve seen a lot of people have fun at their shows, so they must be doing something right.
I remember seeing Trivium supporting Iron Maiden a couple of years ago. Maiden fans are notoriously hostile to supporting bands but Heafy just took it like a little baby who had his candy stolen. He singled out a young kid in the crowd telling him he slept with his mummy instead of just doing what any respecting frontman would do, ignore it and play heavier and faster. Whining douchebag.
I tend to think a lot of the Heafy is a dick stories are some of those a friend of a friend who knows a guy that is friends with a friend saw him act like so and so stories that get passed down second hand and blown out of proportion and people latch on to them.Hell,when i was in high school 95% of the people there belived that marilyn manson was paul from the wonder years and also removed one of his ribs so he could suck his own dick just because they heard someone else say they heard that somewhere. A lot of stories make the rounds with very little first hand knowledge. people like a good story.I am sure heafy has acted like a cock a time or 2 but i tend to think some of the stories are far from accurate and witnessed in person very few times.

Nailed it. I it was common knowledge in my high school that Marilyn Manson was Paul from the Wonder Years, he removed ribs to suck his own dick, AND that he was a convicted child molester who served time in prison.

I’m surprised no one has brought up the fact that Matt Heafy self-proclaimed Trivium as the next Metallica.
I could care less what people say about trivium or heafy. They are a fucking awesome band and Heafy just gained a lot more respect outta for that.

Trivium is cool, but the dude is a douche.
I’ve seen Trivium live quite a few times over a long period of time, and every member of the band seemed polite and very down-to-earth, and Heafy handled all of the vocals perfectly, despite what so many here seem to think they have experienced personally or “heard from a buddy.”
Oh I’ve got two great Matt Heafy stories for you all. Ok, so I went to see them on tour with LOG, and Gojira, and Machine Head two years ago right. So I’m bored standing outside of the 9/30 Club just being bored by the antics of LOG boring, and of course I was only there for Gojira and MH that night. So anyway, I see Trivium standing near the bus, and I started to crack jokes at them. I basically asked them, if they were going to do the entire Metallica catalog live. So their singer Matt Heafy, who CANT TAKE a fucking jokes tries to act all god like in front of me. Basically, I started calling him James Hetfield, and asked if he could do that “Hey hey Hey no mercy” vocal in front of me lol. So then their drummer, comes to his defense. Oh god, what a bigger douchebag than Matt Heafy! He then goes “So what the fuck do you live for a living asshole!!!” and I go “Well not rip off 80’s thrash metal bands, and actually work as a Company Programer for a major East Coast University; Mr Ulrich, so you wanna sell me one of your prized paintings haha?” Oh and I trashed Trivium on Facebook, about a year later just for fun. So some girl, yet again knows Matt and says “He is a like a brother to me, and is dating my best friend you dont know him blah blah.” Yeah I pretty much get the point, anyone who knows or even remotely is friends with this god awful Dokken rip off band has some issues.

And his lyrics have nothing to do with his personality most of the time. Paolo wrote anthem btw. I grew up with Paolo, who’s totally chill most of the time, but I never got to meet the other members. I’m sure Matt’s a cool guy too and he just gets serious at times, but not Axl Rose asshole style.
Seriously…let’s think about this logically, Matt Heafy is a human. oh my god, no way right, so yeah everyone acts a bit cocky sometimes, can you honestly say you have gone your whole life without being cocky? I didn’t think so, which makes you pretty hypocritical. How do you know some of those times he wasn’t just joking, he tends to do that alot. Maybe he was having a bad day, ya know, we all have those days. Think about it from his view He was probably tired and grumpy, he has been traveling nonstop, and playing exhausting shows. You don’t know what goes on with him in his personal life, things could have started going bad for him. Just lay off, bashing bands and people you don’t know is stupid, immature and childish. They got signed to a major record label when he was young,. and they still are kinda young, so forgive him for being a little proud of himself. Basically you’re talking shit about someone you don’t even know, you sound real cool.

it’s just stupid for people to talk shit about someone they dont even know based on one encounter, or a misunderstanding….or they base their decision on his brothers best friends cousins girlfriends son’s opinion on someone…its stupid and pointless…maybe ,matt was an asshole a few times, maybe not, i dont know him, but in reality we all are, at some point. they just need to lay off.
I was working for the promotions company that brought trivium on their first australian tour and let me tell you that trivium are the nicest/ most down to earth band I have ever met.
