My uncle served in Desert Storm. I dont know what he did or where he was stationed, he didnt like to talk about it so I didnt ask questions. All I know is he was there and came back with PTSD. On October 14th, 2001, he was found dead due to an overdose. A suicide. Now, my question is, am I one of those people who can speak out against such people as Kid Rock? Granted that’s still quite a few troops in the country, but at least it’s a step forward from Bush/Cheney’s unrepentant position.

During the campaign, pretty much every Obama supporter wanted out of Iraq, asap. No exit strategy, just pull everyone out. The general consensus was the war had gone on too long with not enough progress and it was a lost cause. Obama himself pledge that if he were elected, he would pull all troops out in 16 months.

Now that Obama is has taken over as Commander in Chief and he is privy to information that we, the public, are not, he now will not commit to a time table. Obama is using the same rhetoric that Bush used about working out a viable exit strategy, stabilizing the government, etc.

Suddenly, it seems that many anti-war people now have much more patience and are willing to continue fighting in Iraq until our military can put together a proper exit strategy. That’s a big change of heart from what I was hearing just a few months ago. Especially considering not much has changed. Robert Gates is still Secretary of Defense and Dave Petraeus is still in charge of US Command in Iraq, just like under Bush. So what has changed? The guy delivering the message, albeit his is more eloquent.
Don’t get me wrong, I am not one of those people who think the world is going to end under Obama, in fact I think he’s doing a pretty good job, but the hypocrisy is killing me.

The wars aren’t going to end in a couple of months time. There were steps that had to be taken in order to invade Iraq and steps must be taken to ensure we clean up, secure the country and form some sort of exit strategy. Otherwise it will be more chaotic than it already is or ever was before. Until then we have to rotate troops in and out until this process can be completed. I don’t like it anymore than the next guy, but it has to be done.

Propaganda hasn’t changed in over 100 years. They use to use sexy pin-up girls to entice men to enlist in the early 1900’s. Viet Nam was a little different, because it was more of an “Uncle Sam Want’s You”…and he’s gonna have you either way, so enlist or get drafted. These days they are trying to relate to people through sports and music. Is it a dirty tactic? Not really, it’s just like any other marketing scheme. It’s just more annoying for those that can’t relate to the music and can see through the propaganda.

Yeah, actually pursuing Osama Bin Laden instead of a push to invade another country is “fucking up instead of fixing”, your politics are often bemusing to me, they were a sizable part of why I took such a long hiatus during all the incomprehensible MetalSucks election coverage, that and everyone else’s.

Just a question – you remember anything about pre-WWI and WWII history, if you do know any history? Stop and think for a little bit about how that social and cultural state compares to today, then how the country changed during those wars and how it changed today during the Afghanistan and Iraq wars. If, for a couple minutes, you can get off your imaginary soapbox and instead of ignoring everything to try and make a smarmy troll post that has nothing to do with the topic at hand and think about something, you might be able to figure out why wartime propaganda – because that’s really what it is – has changed from the “Uncle Sam needs YOU!” posters of WWII to the shit we have today, and following that, you might be able to tell what that says about the current American society as a whole.

@Scott: People thank you now because they don’t want to go do what you’re doing/did. I mean, sometimes I feel like my life is just worthless and consider “hey, maybe I should join the Marines/Army…but then I realize I’m way out of shape (yet still skinny as fuck, thank you metabolism) and I dread having to go through all the training.” As horrible as that may sound, it’s the truth. But as you said, it’s a shame that it took events like 9/11 to get people to realize what a service you’re doing.

Hell, (in general) people need to be more thankful for everything they have. That’s the problem with America these days – everybody thinks that they’re entitled to anything and everything and forget to consider how their greed/wants/needs affect other people.
