I DON’T REALLY REMEMBER THIS SONG BEING ON A SENSE OF PURPOSE

Then again, A Sense of Purpose is the first In Flames album that I have truly not liked – yes, I’m including Soundtrack to Your Escape – so I guess it’s a wonder that I remember anything about the disc besides its bizarre psychosexual cover art.

Here’s the group’s new video for “Delight and Angers.”

    I loved ASOP

  • Blackthorned

I hate to be ‘that guy’ but it all sounds the same on that album to me, like a band running through the motions. The record’s title seems so ironic.
It’s the first In Flames album I didn’t buy but I feel Clayman was the last really inspired piece of work they put out – they used to be such an exciting band, full of ideas.

My loss perhaps – but I see them filling venues here in the UK while I stand in half empty clubs watch Soilwork and Dark Tranquillity play their hearts out.

  • Kye

    I loved the album.

This is actually my favorite song off of it

  • dthrasher

For some reason when I read the title of the song I have to do it in a Skwisgaar voice.

  • The Mighty Fucking Quinn

    lmao @ dthrasher

The album does have a common tone, a singular melody played differently from track to track. However, I find that when I’m in the mood for it, the album on a whole invigorates me after a good listen to it in full.I wish I had the same reaction to Come Clarity.I was so excited when that album came out and aside from seeing them live, I don’t think I listen to any of the songs off that album, save for maybe Leeches. I think Soundtrack was an album that went over a lot of people’s heads, or slipped under their radars, however you want to look at it. It is by leaps and bounds my favorite of the post Clayman albums, and while not my favorite of their albums, at least 6 of the songs on STYE are on my list of my Fav 20 In Flames songs.

The video doesn’t do anything much for me.Also consider that it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a music video and had any real reaction to it.I hear all my music in advance and on the internet.Videos are not a powerful medium to someone like myself, and most of them are just filler on the Music On Demand channels when there is nothing on HBO.How sad is it that the last time I was entertained or sold by a music video was actually that Everytime I Die video that plays off Boogie Nights – now THAT was entertaining.

I’m with Axl on this one…This was the first In Flames album I did not like. It just idk it doesnt sound right. I dont like the sound of the album :/. Sounds generic IMO…But I know alot of people who enjoy it so cheers to them! :) lol

“A Sense Of Purpose” is one of my favorite IF albums. It’s certainly better then “Reroute…” and “STYE.”

I agree with Kye on this one. I like just about In Flames has done and I really get annoyed by those that don’t like the musical direction of the last few albums. I think they sound great and I always look forward to what they put out next. I understand why fans of IF’s early work hate the new stuff but it still gets annoying hearing them get ripped apart every time a new one comes out. I like the old and the new. Again agreeing with Kye “Delight and Angers” is one of my favorite songs on the new album.

Throw me in the boat with the folks that think Clayman is their last good album. From the band that provided me the soundtrack to my senior year of high school (with Whoracle & “Dialogue With the Stars” specifically) to this. Meh.

  • NuMallCore Pwns YoMama

Such a disappointing album… I would have been happy with a Come Clarity clone. This is one of the better songs on this piece of shit album, but it sounds identical to their lead off single, which escapes me at the moment because I only rocked this album for a week before getting sick of it.

  • this is not metal

Hey look it’s the swedish Korn!

  • DravenCorvinus

It’s so fucking funny that this album gets trashed because musically it’s probably their best one. The problem that metal fanboys have is that they want the band to always sound exactly the same. Well guess what a band has to grow, they get tired of playing the same old shit and they want to experiment with different sounds. If you don’t like it, then go listen to something else (I currently recommend the new Mastodon). But seriously give a band credit. I saw these guys lives in Baltimore on this last go round of touring and I must say it was a brutal experience. That Gojira opened up for them may have also had something to do with it.

  • HagstromSpeed

This is why I respect this band so highly, their ability to change their sound, but still sound great every time they do it….just because he actually sings doesnt make it mainstream or less creative, there are still plenty of heavy parts on it, they had their underground years, they deserve to become as popular as they have…each member is very talented and this album goes greatly with the rest of their collection, great album!

  • HagstromSpeed

And to the dude who claims its the, “swedish Korn,” clean the shit out of your ears, sounds NOTHING like Korn :)

  • andrew

    “musically their best one”??

Count me in as another who likes all their albums except this one. Every song sounds the same, almost no hooks (musically or vocally), all middling and plodding midtempo stuff with simplistic drums and a lack of inspiration all around.

The very definition of a band on autopilot. There’s more passion and creativity in 5 minutes of STTYE than there is here.

I definitely have to agree with the comment about the cover art, I could take the album art, but the cover for the new single is mighty creepy.
I’m not gonna jump into the 100000000000000th discussion about why the old IF is better than the new IF. I don’t give a shit. I love In Flames, and nothing so far has changed that. I admit – ASOP is not their best album so far, Colony still holds that place for me. But ASOP is good, a nice change up. Though I did like the direction they were going in with Come Clarity better.
@DravenCorvinus – Also saw them, and Gojira was amazing too. Though the second support (Sonic Syndicate) wasn’t as amazing, I actually got a feeling as if they had playback going on. Actually the show stipulated my IF fanboyism – I willing jumped into a sea of sweaty Germans for that show. Man… But I got a signed CD and picture with the band out of it

  • alexsch

their old stuff just sounds like theyre trying so hard… i might be the only one that likes reroute to remain and after.. i just don’t like nu metal

  • Rik

I’m a huge In Flames fan, and as such, I consider ASOP to be some kind of blasphemy. Reroute was the album that got me into them, so I have nothing against their later material, although Clayman is now my favourite. Come Clarity was a slight disappointment but it’s amazing compared to the turdpile that is ASOP.

Musically it’s okay, despite being nothing new at all. But the production sounds weak, and worst of all, the vocals. The whiny yelp-ish vocals. What the hell, Anders?

Delight and Angers is one of the worst songs too, so I’m not surprised you don’t remember it.

  • Yep, still not metal

Dude sounds just like Jonathan Davis. The shit was PUT into my ears upon listening to the extreme sellout of STYE. Some great lyrics on that one to relate to, if I was fucking 13 again.

There will be no return to the musicianship of their early records. Those albums put them on the map as pioneers of the Swedish melo-death style. Everything past Colony has been a complete step backwards in order to gain a broader fanbase, make fancy pants music vids, and play stadiums. Woopty fuckin’ do. No thanks.

  • Rik

He sounds absolutely nothing like Jonathan Davis. Jonathan Davis can actually sing.
