MARCH IS KINDA FUCKED UP

While all of you are pleasuring yourself to the sounds of the new album from Mastodon (a.k.a this generation’s Yes), I’m being the contrarian and spending some quality time with fresh tunes from Fucked Up. Indeed, the Canadian post-hardcore artistes are making the most out of this month, with two vinyl releases now available. The first is the 7″ single for No Epiphany, a stellar track off of The Chemistry of Common Life, one of my favorite albums of 2008. The B-side is a remix by noise popsters No Age, a band whose appeal I still can’t grasp. The more exciting release is the Year Of The Rat 12″, the latest installment in Fucked Up’s series based on Chinese astrology, released on the What’s Your Rupture label. The main event is the eleven minute title track, a raucous slab of punk fury elongated in a surprisingly natural way. On the flip is the killer “First Born”, a song that easily could have come from the same sessions as last year’s aforementioned album. If you can tear yourself away from Crack This Guy for 20 minutes, I’d recommend giving Fucked Up a try.

[Gary Suarez is not paying his hard-earned money for a proggy concept album about a paralyzed boy whose soul ascends into space, encounters Russian Orthodox mystics and subsequently enters the body of Rasputin. He also writes for Brainwashed and usually manages the consistently off-topic No Yoko No. Say, why don't you follow him on Twitter?]

I don’t like the new Mastodon album.

  2. Senior Swanky (Beardo) says:

You got your fucking Mars Volta in my Mastodon, what the hell.

  3. esteban says:

Quintessence is one terrible song… apart from that, the rest of the album is solid.

  4. Eric says:

My first introduction to Fucked Up was the Year of the Pig EP, which was stellar. I had no idea that a new Year of… EP was due so soon. Record store, here I come.

  5. Conduit#bongloads says:

Mastodon made an album you guys will have much interest for decades on the road. So they say. Fuck it, so I say too.

I don’t really understand this posting; hype up a band while a certain band is getting all the credit EVERYWHERE. And Fucked Up is the same way. For being this “visionary, uncompromising” punk heroes they certainly get a lot of fucking press everywhere. I can’t even count how many times I heard about those dudes the last two years.

Shouldn’t too surprised, you put Kingdom of Sorrow as your #1 album after all!

  6. Zakk n Dime says:

If Mastodon is this generation’s Yes, then progressive music has really gone to shit since 1976 or so. I’m tired of bands that everyone suddenly decides is going to become famous quickly…Mastodon is one of these bands – they are good, but not nearly good or interesting enough to deserve all the attention. Everyone in Yes was a virtuoso player but didn’t rely on their virtuosity to make amazing, epic long songs. No one in Mastodon is doing anything really “new”, and everyone in Cynic and Meshuggah are better than them as musicians, songwriters, and innovators. Fuck Mastodon, it’s enough already.

Look at all you sad, hilarious haters.
