METALLICA MADE A LIVE VIDEO. BIG MISTAKE.

Friday, March 27th, 2009 at 12:00pm by Axl Rosenberg

Usually when you see a video with performance footage, the original studio recording of the song is still layed over the imagery. But the new Metallica video, for “Broken, Beaten and Scarred,” actually uses audio of the band playing the song live.

It’s actually kind of a gutsy move, and I sincerely appreciate what ‘Tallica was trying to accomplish. But Hetfield’s voice doesn’t sound all that great to me (no shock there), and the song itself only sounds kinda sorta okay.

Watch below, then weigh in with your thoughts.

Not sure what’s so bad about this. Hetfield sounds like Hetfield, and he’s largely stopped with the whine thing he does vocally, which is a welcomed relief. The guitars aren’t fuzzy like on the album cut. I can actually hear a bass guitar.

  2. stan darsh says:

Play with metallicas balls now. do it. do it or we’re going to make re-re-loadedst.angerfucktardsbuyouralbums.

  3. seagoat says:

I thought the song and Hetfield sounded fine. I still like Metallica and don’t hate them like a lot of people these days. What I hated about it is the fucking A.D.D. one second shots. Make a fucking video where you can see something for more than one or two seconds at a time. How does someone think that editing together 300 one second shots makes for a good video? Reminds me of a Slipknot DVD I rented a while back and the entire concert was that way. Yeah, yeah, adds to the energy of the show, fast paced, etc. etc. No, it’s fucking annoying.

  4. misterio says:

how was that a big mistake? that was actually pretty good. high energy. id like to see anyone else sing like that for 25 years and still be that good

  5. bearbomb says:

Best song on the album IMO.

  6. Dan says:

That was pretty hard to watch with all those cuts. Guess I’m too old.

  7. This song fucking sucks. “What don’t kill ya makes ya more strong?” MAKE. IT. STOP.

  8. pepe says:

well I thought I was going to hear some lars failed double kicks and james old voice
but I think this is really powerful

thanks metallica for giving me a last hope! XD

  9. How do we go from

    Emptiness is filling me
    To the point of agony
    Growing darkness taking dawn
I was me, but now he ’s gone

    to

    Rise
    Fall Down
    Rise Again

or the above lyrics as dan pointed out?

    Baffling.

    1986 was way cooler…

Speaking of ADD, I can never make it through any video on YouTube. But I watched this entire clip and thought it was pretty good.

  11. Glenn says:

It’s a video designed to convey the big arena excitement of the band’s latest tour as marketing for the upcoming months of festivals and arena shows later this year. I think it does that pretty well, and it was an obvious choice (and novel, really) to use a live recording instead of the album track.

Of course, they probably sifted through all the live recordings of BBS to find one that wouldn’t be embarrassing (or mixed and matched from among several), but the result sounded good and did what it needed to do. Mistake? Not in my opinion.

I think the article it pretty subjective.. -.-’ c’mon guys from metalsucks, you have to agree that the video/the way they play that song live/james voice was pretty good.. also i have to say that even some parts of the album are kinda boring, overall is a good one..
And for those who are still crying for the old metallica, shut up! and ehh.. listen to.. let’s say.. an old metallica album?

  13. I don’t think people are crying so much for an “old metallica” album as much as they are crying for a GOOD Metallica album. Actually, it’s more likely that people stopped crying altogether and have moved on.

I don’t get what the problem is. It sounds good to me. Sure, the vocals aren’t as processed as they are on the studio album. And your point is? I don’t see the difference between this and, say, them releasing footage of a performance from a late night talk show or whatever. The band sounds good and Hetfield sounds like a human being singing a song live.

I saw these guys on the most recent tour – first of two shows in Newark – and they were great. I’m planning to see them again when they play MSG in November.

  15. alex says:

this is great. the real sounds of instruments and bands are so much better. not overproduced nigger bullshit.

  16. b4dboyz- says:

I like the video, just the song lyrics still irritate me.

  17. Dima says:

Meh. I don’t really have a problem with the production or the vocals (click the HQ button). But the song kind of bores the fuck out of me.

new In Flames > new Metallica

  18. Buttfucking Jew Balls says:

Weakest song off of Death Magnetic.

  19. zack says:

    metallica balloons?

  20. Darktragedy says:

I dont see nothing wrong with this.
I actually like it. James is not a great singer thats for sure but he has good energy and goes
    well with the music.
Is much better than what they were doing a couple of years ago with the load and reload and all
that bullshit and lets not even mention St Anger which is a piece of crap.
But new album is actually pretty good in my opinion.

    Harold Faltermeyer rules

  22. hibernum says:

Oh I forgot, Steve Stevens solo guitarO.

  23. cpo says:

wow, ive never seen so many people eager to be bored!

  24. foofoomagoo says:

    @seagoat

That drives me insane. I once saw a video where they rapidly switched between two shots in sync with bass drum. I about had a seizure. Who makes these videos?

  25. metallirock says:

I really don’t have a problem with the song. The live playing is good, and I like the song. The 2,534,764 cuts on the video are annoying, but I’ll take the good with the bad.

  26. dthrasher says:

I think it sounded fine. Lyrics are cheesy as fuck, but I don’t listen to Metallica for the lyrics so it doesn’t really matter. I still feel no need to listen to any metallica other than kill em all/rtl but I have no issues with them being big rockstars and playing the kind of stuff they do now. I don’t personally like it that much, but I would far rather listen to Metallica singles that I’m just meh about vs. 99% of the other radio singles which are complete garbage.

  27. American Hate says:

Does anyone else think the shit riff in the middle is reminiscient of “The bird is the word”?

  28. Steve says:

“better song by far:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zCTJmXrgsFg Does this site embed comments? Harold Faltermeyer rules”

    idiot….

  29. Steve says:

Big Mistake??? have you forgotten what a live band sounds like? It one thing if you are talking about the writing of the song but the actual performance was good. I guess you would have rather have the studio recording synched??

kudos to doing a REAL video, I think it sounds great.

  30. It’s a fine idea, but there’s something about the grainy view and the jumping around that reminds me of the Bon Jovi Bad Medicine video.

  31. The Greys says:

Gee, Metalsucks says something negative about Metallica. What a surprise.

OK, we get it. You don’t like Metallica. You think they’re awful and terrible, and you especially hate “Lar$.” Understood. You’ve been saying as much, on a weekly basis, for months.

What are you going to write about when the tour ends? “I’ll bet Metallica is in the studio and I’ll bet the new music sucks”?

This is your Web site and you’re absolutely entitled to say whatever you want. But you’ve whined about how much you hate Metallica about 1 million times now. Again, we understand your position. So you can drop it now. Thanks.

  33. Revrant says:

    He sounds so tired.

  34. Morningrise says:

Pearl Jam used to play and record live for all their vids. I like the idea.

  35. ryan says:

Big Mistake? I don’t get it. It sounded good.
