A QUICK LOOK AT THE BANDS I DON’T REALLY KNOW FROM THE NEMHF 3RD STAGE
Monday, March 30th, 2009 at 3:00pm by Axl RosenbergHave you heard the good news, brother? The New England Metal and Hardcore Fest has added a third stage for younger bands with whom concert goers might be less familiar.
Looking over the list, I already know one terrible band that will be on this stage (Oceano) and two excellent bands that will be on this stage (Brother Von Doom and The Destro), but there are a lot of names here I’m not familiar with. Thus, I am now going to listen to some of those bands via various channels (really just one channel – MySpace) and make some snap judgements. So, in no particular order:
Some questions: Why are these dudes all wearing white shirts and black pants? Do you think it’s possible Hatebreed is really to blame for all deathcore? And…
…haven’t I seen the concept for this video somewhere before?
See, now, in that video, you don’t know the chick is bad news until the end, which is a nice little twist. The We Were Gents video tries to create tension through the use of dramatic irony, but does so to poor effect, mostly because it pretty much just devolves into Saw XIII.
Holy shit. What is this? It’s like old, good Norma Jean on steroids on speed on cocaine. I don’t know if I think that’s a good thing or a bad thing. Here’s what I do know: it looks like they really bring it when playing some basement for ten people. And I seriously, sincerely mean that as a compliment.
No one ever speak to me of this band again. Jesus, it’s like having sandpaper rubbed against my ears.
“This will not be quick for you.” Yeah, no shit.
This isn’t terrible, actually. It isn’t the most original thing I’ve ever heard, but by comparison to Pictures of Winter, it’s fucking Master of Puppets. I’m really digging this song “Ataxia.” I could see this band making a good album if they ever get signed.
If you’re looking for the next great hardcore band… this isn’t it.
Everything you need to know about this band is in these photos:

There’s a reason this is one of the few signed bands on this roster.
Are those seriously my only choices?
There’s a few parts of some of these songs that I think are kinda cool, but mostly, not so much.
No thank you.
Nope.
Hey there! Not too shabby! Black Dahlia Murder fans will dig this band. I must investigate further…
I like this more than I probably ought to.
See entry for Broadcast the Nightmare. The auto-tuned clean vox gots to go, though.
‘Cause they certainly won’t be around tomorrow.
In conclusion: don’t forget to check out Brother Von Doom and The Destro!

Whoa, Brother Von Doom is excellent now?
I know what you mean about Stray From the Path from listening to them but I got the chance to see them a couple weeks ago and live it comes off a lot thrashier and much better. Plus they do a good cover of Rage Against the Machines- Bulls on Parade
That We Were Gentlemen song is pretty cool.
Conducting are one of the few good local sacramento bands amongst a sea of deathcore garbage, you MUST investigate further. Their When Legends Become Dust… disc is fucking awesome.
I agree, this band is amazing and so is their one and only record.
I second Dave. You really should check out Conducting. Its all the dudes from the disbanded Earache Records band With Passion with the Vocalist from Prosthetic Records disbanded band Invocation of Nehek. Really good shit. On the note of With Passion the band the last band on your list For Today completely rip With Passion off but in the name of Jesus.
I’m pretty sure Conducting disbanded and then formed With Passion, and then With Passion disbanded and now we have Conducting From The Grave again. Not too important, but all this member re-shuffling left them sounding a bit different. A bit less good. But good nonetheless. Check out Trials of the Forsaken EP.
Pretty sure Broadcast the Nightmare is a solid band. They sound like they’d be cool live.
Nothing groundbreaking or spectacular, but alright.
EDIT: EWWW CLEAN VOCALS JUST CAME ON– BOO CUT THOSE OUT!!
Conducting from the grave and with passion were around at the same time but some members went to with passion, conducting disbanded and more members went to with passion all except the original conducting singer. They found a new bassist in with passion when the original left that band disbanded and formed the new conducting. They are the best on this venue. Within the ruins also tear it the fuck apart but will be labeled as metalcore cause they sorta are…
Haha! Are you fucking serious Broadcast the Nightmare is playing?! I just saw them Saturday night they are HORRIBLE! One of the lamest bands I’ve seen in a long time. For Today was even better than they were and that’s not a compliment.
Brother Von Doom is gunna be THE SHIT.. 18 days everybody!!
And I can’t stop laughing at the pics of this Shroud of Bereavement band here…. like what am I supposed to expect?
Wow, NEMHF sure knows how to ruin a good thing. I appreciated the commentary almost as much as I enjoyed listening to all of these bands. I definitely recommend re-listening to stray from the path though, really nice kids who’ve seriously busted their asses, it doesn’t hurt that they’re one of the few chaotic bands left that does a good job still.
We Were Gentlemen’s vocalist was in the now defunct Winter Solstice, the hardcore band that had one and only album on Metal Blade before splitting for no reason.
Yeah, like Adam, Polska and KG said Conducting are some unholy almagamation of With Passion and a new frontman. Conducting was first but they ended up splitting up when their vocalist Drew went off to start a different band, so With Passion was formed (and signed, wow, they actually made it into that horrible Earache Car Combat videogame). Anyway, With Passion split and Conducting came back with a new frontman, they sound so much better now than they did on their old demos. The new cd fucking crushes and you need to check them out, they’re some of the nicest dudes I’ve had the pleasure to meet.
Within the Ruins, while deathcore, has tons of catchy and technical riffage. They’re pretty good, don’t bash them too much.
Hmm must say i disagree with you on This or the Apocalypse. They remind me a lot of Misery Signals and August Burns Red.I advise you give them another spin, you’ll be happy you did.
Since when does being a nice group of kids qualify any band for a re-listen?
Fuck Brother Von Doom and Conducting From the Grave. Stop giving credit where credit isn’t due these bands just rehash out the same shit over and over again. Ex: Thrash,Thrash,Thrash, Stupid tappy part, FUCKING BREAKDOWN!!!!!!!!!!, sweepy, sweepy, epic riff to end the song. Give credit to something more original and honest at least (EX: Stray From the Path). I will leave you with something that you will probably will be drooling over in about a week or two the headline will read “OMG! Check this out you have heard it before and it’s pretty fucking gay but whatever there are breakdowns and awesome growls FUCK YEAH!!!!” http://www.myspace.com/chelseagrinmetal
Soldiers owns. One of the few bands playing on the 3rd stage that I actually look forward to seeing.
COnudcting actually has meaningful riffage and not pure riff salad which is why it is a worthwhile listen
You passed on Black Teeth! You should see these guys in person they kick ass and don’t sound like every other band out there.
My sister is getting drum lessons from the drummer of Black Autumn.
i couldn’t believe it when he said his band would play at NEMHF.
Conducting from the grave are fucking awesome. The Broadcast the nightmare debut is pretty promising, they just have to replace every shitty, half baked clean part with a fuckin ripper solo like the one on shepard’s prayer. That would be a monster sophomore album
i dunno… i kinda liked This or The Apocalypse
Conducting From The Grave is fucking amazing.
I just don’t like their lead singers vocals too much. His highs / normal growling voice is really annoying. His lows however are amazing.
