Just as Vince was surprised to find himself enjoying Isis last week, I am now more than a little shocked that I enjoy the new Zao song, “What Will You Find?”, which is now streaming on the band’s MySpace page. Granted, prior to this my only real experience with Zao is 2004’s The Funeral of God, but that album struck me as being so very meh (and before all the Zao fans start flipping their shit, by “meh” I mean it wasn’t great and it wasn’t terrible, it just wasn’t for me).
But this track is pretty kick-ass – it’s angry, dirty, and vicious. I especially dig the mid-section when all the crazy guitar shit starts happening. And the best part? No more shitty clean vocals! Hoo-ray!
The song comes from the band’s new album, Awake?, which will be released by Ferret on May 5. I may actually have to listen to this thing!

10 years too late…
Zao are the Napalm Death of christian hardcore. No orignal members to be found but still have the power to kill it on every album. Zao and Living Sacrifice are amongst the very few Christian bands ill ever support.

Not bad. I think Tim Lambesis (As I Lay Dying) is producing this effort which is interesting considering Zao definitely influenced AILD.
i don’t care that these guys are/were a christian band at one time, they are one of my favorite bands. i love how each of their albums has it’s own sound. like any other long-time fan though, i still wish these guys would reach the level they were on when the released “where blood and fire bring rest” or “liberate…”.

Yeah, they’re definitely not nearly as Christian as they used to be. Regardless, “Liberate Te Ex Inferis” is one of the greatest metal/hardcore albums of all time; so fucking dark. “Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest” is pretty damn good too.
Sorry for the angry post up front. Zao’s album the funeral of god is an amazing album, technically as well as the song writing. “MEH” is a piss poor description for anything that ZAO has put forth over the years. Give these guys another listen, and another chance. Great band with a killer live show. MEH……. what the fuck!! get real!!!!!!

You should check out the songs “Exchange”, “Desire The End”, “Autopsy”, “Skin Like Winter”, “Walk On By, Walk On Me”, “Ghost Song”, and “Savannah”. These guys are pretty fucking killer in short spurts. I don’t mess with their shit after Liberate Te Ex Infernis, but they bring it pretty hard on the right songs.
