Me and my advanced reptilian brain (ahem, rather: ‘my advanced reptilian brain and I’) were never the biggest fans of stoner rock mainstays Clutch, but they sure did make it hard to hate on their simple n stony hardcore-flavored early jamz from the beginning of the gay 90s.
These daze the spirited Maryland band is still goin, allbeit in a much blusier thump-rock fashion — currently on the road in Europe and soon back in the States, whilst gearin up to release yet another album this July entitled Strange Cousins From The West. Congrats on th’longevity!
Now pass the ten-footer this way, k?
CLUTCH – “Big News I”, from Clutch (1995)
CLUTCH – “Spacegrass”, from Clutch (1995)
CLUTCH – “Binge and Purge”, from Transnational Speedway League (1993)
“Come on motherfucker, come on motherfucker, come on motherfucker — LET’S THROW DOWN….just try me, just try me — what are you waiting for?!?”
TRIVIA FACTOID: drummer Jean-Paul Gaster played drums on Wino’s recent solo album Punctuated Equilibrium, and has also worked with Opeth keyboardist Per Wiberg on a side project that will hopefully see daylight soon. with the other Clutch dudes too (minus vocals) called The Bakerton Group, which we’ve actually discussed before. Duh.
Clutch (and JP Gaster w/Wino) tour dates after the jump the jump.

if you are referring to the instrumental side project called Bakerton Group, featuring all the Clutch dudes, plus Wiberg, the new record is out now on Weathermaker Music. it’s called “El Rojo”… if there is another side project, that would be cool too.
JP and Per Wiberg recorded a jam album with some other folks as King Hobo… good stuff. I highly recommend it.
I loves me some Clutch… and they actually manage to keep getting better with every release.
Clutch-Clutch is a stone cold classic!
Binge and Purge is probably one of the awesomest songs ever recorded. I love that tune!
really nice shit to just lay back to. early clutch is just pure classic
Strange Cousins from the West = album of the year.
and I haven’t heard a single note.
My next tat is gonna be the Elephant Riders shield.
CLUTCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“Strange Cousins from the West = album of the year.

I’m seconding this.
Clutch is awesome. One of my favorite bands.
btw, drugs and pot and such ain’t my thing but if you’re going to do a story about Clutch songs to get high to, why wouldn’t you include “The Mod Goes Wild”? Hell, half of the second verse is about smoking pot:
“Everybody move to Canada, smoke lots of pot. Everybody move to Canada, here’s how we do it: Bum rush the border guard before he and his dog ever knew it.”
I LOVE CLUTCH SO MUCH
Fuckin’ love Clutch.
I have fond memories of literally sitting in my best friends garage, smoking as much weed as we could pool our money together and afford, listening to “Binge and Purge” and hatching plans to attack the frat boys at the local hangs. Great times.
There are a lot of negative comments on the other articles, but here everyone is saying how much they like Clutch, thats because CLUTCH ARE FUCKING AWESOME. You guys should do more articles on good bands.
Clutch fuckin Rock!!! Nice song selection but not the best Clutch songs to get poke smot to. I’d have to go wth “Escape From the Prison Planet”, “Tight Like That” and “The Elephant Riders” but then who am I kidding I’ve been stoned to all of ‘em.
the emperor’s in the pigsty
the geisha’s in the shack
and you better believe that i’ll hold em there
till the feds they pay me back
god i love clutch
nice the see them get some good press
