SATURDAY SONG TO GET STONED TO: OPETH — “DELIVERANCE”

Saturday, May 2nd, 2009 at 1:28pm by Kip Wingerschmidt

deliveranceHoly moly, those sexy Swedes still dun got it! And they clearly proved so last night at smelly New Jersey’s Starland Ballroom, where they vaguely represented almost every album they’ve ever released — obviously last year’s Watershed, album-before Ghost Reveries, and juggernauts Still Life and Blackwater Park, but also early records Orchid and My Arms, Your Hearse.

This guy was bored a leel by the meandering tunes from those yesteryear albums, and in my not-so-humble-opinion drummer Martin “Axe” Axenrot don’t hold no candle to Opeth-heyday skinsman Martin Lopez, but man o man, did the band rrrrock von rockinstein!

And after a 10-song, 1.7 hour long set that included zero songs from Deliverance, Opeth closed the encore with the title track from said ‘heavy’ album.

Now go smoke a Swede.

Opeth’s kitschy way of wanking over death tunes has always made me cover my ears, still this tune got stuck in my ears for months, and made it to my very favz. Seriously, I listened to this shit for about threehundred times…

  2. Tim says:

Favorite band…seeing them Tuesday, if all goes well.

  3. g says:

I think I like Axenrot’s playing roughly as much as Lopez’s – Axe is a little more technical and just has a style about his playing that is really intriguing to me.

  4. Pooper McFartpants says:

Gotta disagree with you, g — Axe is noticeably sloppier than Lopez, and the drumming on *Watershed* (his first studio album with the band) is definitely less inventive than Lopez’ playing, which was always pocket-heavy and jazzy when it needed to be….that dude always played effectively to the song. Anyone know what up with Lopez’ solo project?

    • SonOF says:

Yeah, I thought Lopez was a monster as well. Axenrot is obviously not bad by any means, but I am partial to Lopez.

I’ll be at the New York show at the end of the month. Excited to see Enslaved as well. :)

      • Carter says:

I’ve seen both. Lopez was sloppier on double bass… even on albums. Axe is solid as hell… dont know what you’re talkin about.

  5. groverXIII says:

    Ah yes… Opeth is awesome.

  6. Eric Hanson says:

Glad to see they’re including more variety than the last time out…and hopefully the crowd was better too (ripe with a weird combination of hipsters and douchebags on their last tour, which was fucktastically terrible). Seeing them when they come back at the end of the month and I can’t wait…

  7. THE CARL says:

I was at that show and Enslaved and Opeth were both fucking spot on, totally awesome show. and by the way, I never heard Lopez perform a gravity blast like my man Axe ; )

  8. SHERWOOD says:

Nice suggestion, will do this. funny story , I had to soundcheck Opeth’s drums at the Ogden Theatre in Denver when I was doing some production work, the Opeth guys were doing press downstairs, I happened to learn the end beat of Deliverance, so I played it, the dudes came upstairs all smiles, I just kept playing in forever….as the song goes… I also went vinyl shopping with Michael and Axlrottten

  9. taog36 says:

    my favorite song by opeth

  10. Elpants says:

Does anyone know their entire set list? Order doesn’t really matter, I really want to hear some “The Grand Conjuration” when I see them.

  11. iolanach says:

The last great Opeth album. Don’t get me wrong, i like the last two, but they’re just “good”. This one was great.

  12. Shanetera says:

Are you telling me to kill In Flames?

  13. Mynamesucks says:

    God i love Opeth.

  14. Blackthorned says:

Don’t care about the drummer debate too much but I’ll say this – Lopez is talented but threw his chance away, Axe has different strengths that are still just as worthy and he’s the man in the chair now so I support him.

  15. Miniferret says:

Seeing them when they come to DC, damn excited!

  16. dan wolfson says:

    I wish I could’ve seen them
but i saw Gojira tonight instead
and it blew me the fuck away

  17. FranticDav says:

And they fucking kicked ass here again in Boston!

  18. Mike says:

I was at that show. Started off great, then really killed the momentum with their slow songs. I was right up by the stage, but some douche felt it was funny to yell out song requests by hair metal bands which hurt it a little. Axenrot is a good death metal drummer but he isn’t as dynamic as Lopez was. Good show, but not great.

  19. Sin and Death says:

I don’t see how everyone can make such a fuss over “new” Opeth. The band fucking rocks, o.k.? Can’t it just be left at that, instead of whining about slow songs? God forbid someone try something creative and fresh.

  20. Goopus says:

    Otep is awesome!

  21. pigchop says:

Yeah…good stuff. A great song to get stoned ‘with’…”Nuclear War” from VoiVod’s “War and Pain”. Yeah…can ya’ dig that? Oh…and I don’t mean dig it as in cyber baliwah crap…damn modern age is fucking with damn near everything golden.

  22. Strapping Young Lad says:

just saw em last night in boston!!! the mosh to the end of this song is awesome! and yea, people started an Otep and a Bloodbath chant. funny stuff

  23. trapthem says:

get to see them on friday and i’m fuckin’ stoked!

  24. bucketochicken says:

Seeing them on Wednesday. Never seen them before, or Enslaved, so I’m excited. Can’t wait.

  25. Setlist says:
