AWESOMENESS OF NEW ZAO ALBUM EXPLAINED: THE POWER OF THE ‘STACHE

zao awake mustacheMetalSucks liking Zao is something akin to getting a blowjob from a hooker and not getting an STD — possible, but certainly not likely. And so the realization that both Axl and myself enjoyed Zao’s new song “What Will You Find?,” — released last month — was nothing short of shocking. Until I clicked a linky-dink in a press release sent this weekend directing me to Zao’s MySpace to hear their entire new album. And then it all suddenly made sense; there, at the top of their MySpace page, was a glistening new promo photo of the band with singer Daniel Weyandt sporting a wicked, classy, distinguished and bad-ass handlebar mustache.

Clearly the power of the ‘stache is behind Zao’s newfound rise to the realms of good music; do not underestimate the power of the stache, people! And this mustache is no joke; Weyandt looks like the kind of man who wouldn’t sport lip-hair as an ironic hipster fashion statement. No, instead he is the dinguished metal gentlemen, a mustachioed man amongst ironic bearded boys, a shephard amongst artsy-fartsy, poser sheep.

Thankfully what I’m hearing of the rest of Zao’s new album Awake? backs up our initial impressions; to quote my pal Axl, this is “angry, dirty, and vicious” music and represents a big step forward for a band who previously excelled in meh-itude. Unfortunately Axl’s delight at the absence of “shitty clean vocals” in “What Will You Find?” will be short-lived, as said vocals do make an appearance in the rest of the album; but they’re mostly kept to a minimum and aren’t too obnoxious (for the most part).

So head on over to Zao’s MySpace and listen to all of Awake? now before it’s taken down for tomorrow’s release day. While you’re listening, think about your own facial hair (or lack thereof) and contemplate what that says about your place in the world.

also, this article supports my claim that nietzsche was the most metal philosopher. look at his stache! http://ebooks.adelaide.edu.au/n/nietzsche/friedrich/portrait.jpg

…thats not Zao. But in all the seriousness the new songs sound real nice. I’ve always felt that these guys can get away with doing whatever they want.

  • IDE

Doesn’t top Liberate Te Ex Inferis or Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest, but personally I place it between liberate and the funeral of God, because I didn’t find it as dark as liberate or as melodic as the funeral.

  • jamie

bout time you guys liked them haha

i am really confused about why metalsucks doesn’t (didn’t?) like Zao. I did indeed give the new one a listen and it’s pretty good, much better than their last two albums However, Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest? Liberate to ex Inferis? even Parade of Chaos and the self-titled are all pretty amazing albums. I’m sorry but I won’t, nay I can’t, listen to any more opinions of Zao from metalsucks until any 4 of those albums are given a listen or two.

haha, man that stash is fucking serious. Zao has fallen in and out of my graces every other album it seems, and since the fear is what keep’s us here sucked, this was bound to be good. And fuck, it’s really good.

Ah, well, I honestly tried, but I don’t think the new stuff is for me. lol I never thought much of their old stuff either, but I don’t see where this is any better.

      j’agree

  • TurdFerguson

I get plenty of blowjobs from hookers and i am still disease free. but i still don’t like these guys.

  • fightingmike

Zao’s been one of my faves since 98 and i am stoked that they are still puting out good shit. Daniel Weyandt sounds amazing live and on record and that stache is looking chappish!

  • Mike =O

    LMFAO freakin hilarious

  • SonOF

Daniel Weyandt’s vocals have always been amazing. And that Captain Crunch mustache isn’t too shabby either.

    • Noel

      crunchitize me capn.

  • taog36

i have a mustache just like that but mines about 2 maybe 3 times linger, and i have a long pointy beard too to top off the crazy sinister villian guy that ties bitches to train tracks
but i still dont like zao

  • keepitwolf

isnt the dude from the Juliana theory in this band again?

  • 20 eyes

some bands are born to play d-beat and this band is one of them.
i only really like the “what will you find” song
    and that is mainly d-beat.
and alot of their songs have d-beat incorporated into them and those parts seem to sound really cool to me.
maybe i just only like dbeat music.

    oh well

(i said D-beat alot in my comment)

  • Mike Malice

    I still don’t like Zao

  • groverXIII

    Is dbeat short for deadbeat?

I used to listen to Zao back in my religious days… I never really like the vocalist, but ‘Liberate Te Ex Inferis’ is a pretty good album. ‘Funeral of God’ isn’t bad either.

    • 20 eyes

dbeat is a punk style drum beat, look up discharge, it is named after them. hence the D

  • HOPKINS: CHRISTIAN FINDER GENERAL

WHAT A BUNCH OF FAGGY LOSERS.

THAT BAND IS FUCKING SHIT TOO.

  • Selaphiel

Where Blood and Fire Bring Rest and Liberate Te Ex Inferis are both awesome albums, Parade of Chaos and Self-Titled are both decent. I’m really not a fan of anything else by them. Buuuut, I’ll give this album a try.

And, yeah, Metal Sucks dudes. Listen to Blood and Fire. Amazing album. Arguably the greatest Christian metalcore album ever, only real competition is Underoath’s Cries of the Past.

  • Metal Fuckin’ Dave

Dude on the far right looks to be at least 50 years old.
