MORBID ANGEL’S ALTARS OF MADNESS: HAS IT REALLY BEEN 20 YEARS ALREADY?

Thanks to Cosmo Lee at Invisible Oranges for pointing out that today marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Morbid Angel’s historic debut, Altars of Madness. As Lee notes, “Morbid Angel weren’t kings of death metal yet. Altars of Madness was the beginning of their coup.” My personal favorite Angel album, Domination, was still six years away. But it’s impossible to ignore the importance of this release to the death metal genre.

After the jump, watch nine out of the ten songs on the record, as filmed for the Live Madness ‘89 concert film that captures the band performing just months after the album’s release. Live Madness is also available as a DVD that was included Altars‘ 2006 re-release.

doesnt it sound like they just put the album sound over the live performance? it doesnt sound like a live audio to me really

I was actually digging through some old cds and cassettes this morning and found an old cassette tape of Alters Of Madness and Blessed Are The Sick.

  4. Limmy Killmiester says:

Now I really feel old.. And it’s kinda cool that I was 12 when I picked this one up.

  5. Glenn says:

I agree — this isn’t the live audio. Great stuff, but it’s not “live.”

  6. balls says:

Happy Birthday to the best death metal album ever recorded.

  7. ben says:

Actually, I think this is the real audio. I’ve seen them do this shit live, and the amazing thing is that they consistently nail their sound in performance.

  8. Matty O'Shea says:

If you people watched more than the first video, you’ll actually find some live clips. Smart-asses. And I’m not going to pretend I listened to this album when it first came out (because I was 5 years old) but I can’t believe someone would say Domination was their favorite MA album. That’s just incomprehensible to me. It’s gotta be Covenant or Altars, bar none.

  9. I, Monarch says:

Domination might be my favorite Morbid Angel as well (or this one). The songs are so damn catchy and that guitar tone is unmatched. I still think Domination and Where The Slime Live is one of the best 1-2 songs in any album.

  10. cornblood says:

    great fuckin album

  11. Dillon says:

Amazing how much time flies. Classic album.

  12. jason says:

I know this is going to sit well with a lot of people, but I don’t think this album has aged particularly well.

  15. Mechanix666 says:

I have one thing to say: “Ia iaaaaaaaaaaaak sakkakh iak sakkakth
    Ia shaxullllllllllllll”

  17. hibernum says:

Oh how the mighty hath fallen…

  18. Tim says:

Love this album, love everything they did up through Gateways… Heretic wasn’t that good, but who knows, maybe with Vincent back they’ll recapture a bit of the old sound again. Altars has to be one of the top twenty death metal albums ever recorded.

  19. SonOF says:

Pardon the cliche, but this album was way ahead of its time. Classic.

  20. That Other Guy says:

    Truely a timeless album… Immortal!

  21. joethecabdriver says:

How dare you say Domination is your favorite Morbid Angel platter when in fact it was secretly made by homosexuals, those same homosexual who have ghey secks with your face while sipping wine coolers while manly men such as I go off and listen to Formulas Fatal To The Flesh and drink beer.

Did you know that Trey Azigthoth (a.k.a George Emmanuel), age 42, still lives with ‘mommy’ in a one-bedroom condo in Gulfport, Florida.? Did you know that “Trey’ drives a 12-year-old Pontiac that he thinks is a classic, but really isn’t? And that he spends more money on that car than a sane person would spend on a Maserati?? Did you know that ‘mommy’, with whom he lives, has half the people in the community pissed off at her? Did you know that “George” is an aging remnant of a musical genre that is already dead — as the name “death metal” implies — only his fans have yet to realize that. Total fraud
