THE NEW DREAM THEATER VIDEO LOOKS ALL PROFESSIONAL AND STUFF

Tuesday, May 12th, 2009 at 2:49pm by Vince Neilstein

Heyo! Dream Theater have a new video for “A Rite of Passage,” the very song they gave away for free last week. A new DT video wouldn’t be too much of a novelty if not for the fact that for a good ten years there before Systematic Chaos we didn’t get any Dream Theater music videos at all aside from live videos/DVDs the band put out for sale. I’m so used to only seeing live footage of Dream Theater that it just looks downright odd to see the band lit up all nice amongst spacey CG effects and to see Mike Portnoy dressed in anything other than his trademark custom Knicks jerseys. And the funny thing is, as cool as this video looks, I’m not sure that at this point in their career Dream Theater really even need official videos like this — I mean, let’s be honest, the only things Dream Theater fans care about seeing are close-ups of John Petrucci’s hands and Portnoy’s sick drum chops. But hey, there’s plenty of that in this video too, and any time a band like Dream Theater gets done up with the works the world can’t be all that bad of a place after all.

Black Clouds and Silver Linings will be officially released on June 23rd.

Something about the video just doesnt feel right… when I watched it a few days ago, I was a little disturbed but Petrucci made it all better.

    “AAA Rite Of Passage”

    very catchy indeed.

i missed the mp3 download so i never really heard the song unitl now. Two words: holy shit. This song is sweet

  3. Sammy says:

I like how they’ve “metaled” it up more since signing with RR. And Portnoy’s backup growling vocals, along with Labrie keeping it more tenor is a nice change.

And fuck Petrucci. He never fails to raise my personal insecurities and lower my self esteem.

  4. Idols&Anchors says:

Pity they miss out the best part of Petrucci’s solo and Jordan’s entire keyboard shredfest. The scene kids can’t sit through a 9min epic on Kerrang nowadays huh?

Someone should’ve told LaBrie YEARS AGO – all he needed to do was stand the fuck still if he want to look cool.

  5. uLy says:

no where near as good as the single Forsaken but it does feel more metal and that could be a good sign for the rest of the album.

  6. phale says:

this video is about 2012. pretty creepy from a band who predicted the world trade center in flames.

    • Drakodan says:

No, its about Freemasonry. Don’t shoot your mouth off like that when you don’t know if you’re correct.

      • phale says:

im quite confident, in fact. the shot of the sun lining up with the center of the galaxy is proof enough.

but ya, freemasonry too…reminds me of the freemasons in bergmans magic flute. and that makes the wtc art even creepier.

    • nug says:

they didnt really predict it cause it was just the cover art of there live albumb from NY which had the sacret heart with NY in flames

  7. THE CARL says:

Dream Theater has always been a band that pushed the envelope but never forgot that they were a metal band. Awesome song, can’t wait for the new album.

@Phale, Are you talking about Sacrificed Sons? That song came out before 9/11?

    • Garske says:

Nah it was on Octavarium from 2005.

Regardless, everyone knows that John Petrucci is actually God anyway.

    • Zorbs says:

phale is referring to the album cover for the live Metropolis cd/dvd. It showed New York in flames and was released on 9/11, if I’m not mistaken.

The artwork was already done before the Trade Center attack happened.

  8. Carter says:

I would love this band if they didnt have this singer. he annoys the shit outta me.

  9. Glenn says:

Good tune, though I wish it wasn’t so Systematic Chaos, part II…

  10. djabthrash says:

    terrible song IMO

  11. zhitnik says:

Great song, and I haven’t enjoyed a whole lot from DT since Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence…and still all of my favorites of theirs are from the 90’s. I like the relative simplicity (at least until the song speeds up). You dont have to cram 100 drum fills into the first 4 minutes of the song to be a prog band, although thats the way alot of the bigger ones are going these way (im looking at you, dragonforce). Anyway, it should also be noted that this is a severely shortened version of the actual single, so if this is your first listen, it gets even better.

  12. Michael says:

After Train of Though, Dream really hasn’t progressed much. As much as it saddens me, this song has confirmed to me the need to find a new favorite band.

  13. kel says:

    realment no me guso mucho
    demaciado parecido a metallika
perdieron la escencia ke karacteriazaba a dream theater

    se han vuelto mas comerciales…

  14. Mike J. says:

Sounds freakin’ great – can’t wait to hear the whole album!!! They never fail to impress me with each new album, they just keep getting better and better!

  15. 5 says:

Dram Theater is one of my favorite bands, but this new song was just boring.
I liked that part in the middle with the gallope and the solo, but then it paused for a second and got boring again
I also didn’t like their singer on this track
