I got Soulside Journey in ’92 in a tape trade with my friend Eric. I got that and he got Megadeth’s So Far, So Good, So What? It was probably another seven or eight years before I listened to another Darkthrone album. At the time it didn’t compare to Carnage, Entombed, Grave, Dismember, Unleashed, Hypocrisy. Who knew it would be so well regarded nearly twenty years later?

Ironically I am a huge death metal fan but apparently not a fan enough considering i have none of those albums. This is one of those rare articles that really opened my eyes. I mean who knew Dark Throne was a more death metal oriented band before they pretty much wrote the book on black metal?

A suprisingly well-thought out and complete list. It’s awesome they included Incantation, Onward to Golgotha never gets the credit it deserves for being one of the heaviest, evilest metal albums ever.

Good list. I would have added Dismember’s Like an Everflowing Stream (which many people mentioned) and Opeth’s Orchid (although I know that album isn’t death metal in the strictest sense).
