SO, WHAT DO YOU THINK OF CHICKENFOOT?
Wednesday, May 27th, 2009 at 2:56pm by Vince Neilstein
In case you’ve missed all 24,567 Blabbermouth posts over the past year and a half about them, Chickenfoot are a new supergroup featuring Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony, Sammy Hagar and Chad Smith. Looks cool on paper, but supergroups never seem to pan out they way they ought to, amirite? The problem always seems to be that supergroups are really going for it and trying to be taken seriously, a problem from which Chickenfoot shouldn’t suffer at all since each band member is a millionaire several times over from their respective day jobs. In other words, none of them need this; it’s just for shits and kicks.
So is it any good?
Listen to some album clips for yourself, then check out the video below of the band performing live in Cambridge, MA last night. One thing I’d forgotten before seeing this video: Chad Smith is a fucking monster of a drummer that hits the skins just right, a skill he doesn’t necessarily get to hone too much with his day job. Chickenfoot’s self-titled debut comes out on June 5th.
So… what does the MetalSucks Haterade Mafia think of Chickenfoot? You tell us.

I like it. Nothing groundbreaking that we haven’t heard before, but by everything I already heard it’s solid stuff. Looking forward to the album.
I dig the groove. Michael Anthony still has that ridiculous high pitched backing vocal that just kills. I’m probably not gonna get the album, but it warrants a legal download, at minimum
Can i get some wine with this cheese?
Fuck Joe Satriani, his nickname (”Satch”), his terrible bald head/sailor hat combo, his redneck Oakleys, his belief that he is popular, and most of all his “music.”
He’s every guy that works at Guitar Center.
Oh right, and his little band too.
But I find the rest of those guys to be cool, fun musicians.
are you fuckin serious? idiot. Satch is insanely good. if you knew anything about guitar, it’s pretty obvious.. fucking idiot
I smell a Coldplay fan.
Yes, Satch is good at guitar, just like most people that sell guitars at Guitar Center, but I don’t think he writes good music.
No, I’m not a Coldplay fan, but having grown up reading Guitar World (like every other metal fan/guitarist on earth), I must have seen his ugly ass on the cover at least 3 times a year for the last 15 years. It got old.
dude you shouldnt go off of looks, hes easily one of the top 20 guitarists still alive in the world, and has been selling records for 20 years now, and so why arent those guys at Guitar Center on stage around the world? God damn you need to check your facts boy…..
You have to remember he’s also trained the likes of Steve Vai, Alex Skolnick, John Petrucci and I believe Kirk Hammatt as well.
Lol…Satch has only given lessons to Steve Vai and Kirk Hammett…Skolnick and Petrucci are not in his list of trainee’s…
I’ll have to change my handle to Redneck Oakleys. Classic!
This group gets the gift of lowest expectations. All things considered, it’s pretty rockin with a good groove. It’s nice to see kids have some fun. It’s cool to see Michael Hotsauce Anthony smiling onstage again.
I really like what i have heard so far. I got really burned out on hagar from a former cover band experience. For 62 or any age that guy rips on vocs.I have always like Michael Anthony for his background vocs.(would really like to hear him sing lead) Satriani needed a band like this so people can appreciate how good he is. I am a guitar player and he bores me to tears because it all sounds so polished and muzak like. I think they are all in a position to make this a real band with longevity at least for a few years before they have to fossilize Hagar!
ya sounds good, but will it last?
Anyone remember SuperGroup on VH1 with Ted Nugent, Sebastian Bach, etc. what the hell happened to them?! was all hyped to see an album release….then all of a sudden they just disappeared without a reason (or at least none that I have head).
Hopefully they can keep it together, cause it sounds like a great mash-up.
Well, both Baz and Ted are two of the biggest egotistical douches on the planet, as well as being flat-out crazy. It’s no wonder that project went south.
I think they’ll be bach with a vengeance
Savage Animal? That idea needs to go Bach to the sewer it sprang from.
I doubt we’ve seen the Bach of them just yet.
I like it, there needs to be more music like this.
Baby Boomers around the world just creamed their pants.
dont kid yourselves, this band blows and you know it
It’s Sammy, so it’s fun and light. Not great. Not bad. And this Sammy hopes to have a head of hair like that at age 62.
And with Hagar, Satch and Anthony, they may be the shortest band ever.
They need Angus and Dio
In all honesty, It’s not great. It’s not great at all. In fact a little boring. Stick to day jobs, and I don’t think i’ve ever seen Satch’s eyes, ever.
Chad Smith’s groove is the best thing they have going for them.
Chickenfoot are not bad by any stretch, but they certainly aren’t special.
The sad thing about this is that one of Steve Vai’s big breaks in music was being Eddie Van Halen’s replacement when DLR went solo. So now Satch is Eddie Van Halen’s replacement with Sammy Hagar? Sad, especially this late in his career. Maybe he needs money for his retainer fees in his lawsuit against Coldplay? Per diem baby!
Not like this hasn’t been done a million times before. It gets a “yawn+”
I don’t care AT ALL for this band. Listened to 2 or 3 songs and it was background noise for me.
I’m not a huge fan, but it’s kind of cool to see these elder statesmen of rock doing something like this just because they want to and not for money.
Sammy Hagar was all it took to ruin it for me.
i would probably like it if it weren’t for that bastard hagar….
So this is what it would sound like if satch joined van halen as a second guitarist……..very familiar. It’s the second coming of Van Hagar.
I can’t get past the Hagar issue – and this coco the clown meets Robert Plant phase isn’t helping.
It’s straight ahead, groovy, blues-based rock. It’s music that won’t age. On first listen nothing will really pop out at you…but the difference with it is that among all the Britney Spears and the Katy Perry and Avril Lavigne dreck, this stuff is actually real. It’ll stand the test of time.
I think it’s good stuff
It’s way better than Van Hagar, but then again, what isn’t?
Going to see them on July 4th here in Halifax Canada. I’m a big Sammy fan so its pretty exciting for us. I wish the set list had a few more of their respective hits in it, but the album seems to be pretty good from the clips. The boys are in it for fun so the stage banter I have seen appears to be a lot of laughs.
It’s pretty good. Definitely better than I expected (the “Jump”-y side of VH). And delivers best Satriani’s playing for years. Maybe when there is just one solo in a song he can focus properly?
let old men be old men…they couldn’t keep up with the michael keene’s or misha moonsor’s of this day….
