IS BLACK ANVIL THE NEXT BIG THING?

Friday, June 5th, 2009 at 2:39pm by Axl Rosenberg

Multiple people have RAVED to me about New York’s own Black Anvil over the past couple of months, swearing up and down that this band was the absolute brownest, stinkiest shit in metal right now.

And now the band has signed to Relapse.

Because I’m a total dick who doesn’t always heed his friends’ advice, I still haven’t listened to Black Anvil’s most recent release, Time Insults the Mind. But they’re doing a show at Public Assembly in Brooklyn this Sunday with some cool bands, including perennial MetalSucks doom faves Salome. Schedule permitting I’ll get to check out Black Anvil then. In the meantime, here’s some footage of the band I stole from Metal Injection. Watch it and then hit up Black Anvil’s MySpace page and let us know what you think.

Also, get details of the Black Anvil/Salome gig after the jump. Even if you don’t dig Black Anvil, Salome are an absolutely amazing band that need to be experienced live.

the instruments remind me of mastodon. other than that the poor (sorry MI) sound quality makes it hard to comment further. im probabl;y too lazy to check their myspace

    • RobInjection says:

I think we even mention the sound quality is poor in the description of the video on our site. We tried to get soundboard, but that place isn’t miked.

  2. vincent says:

I think that bassist strums his instrument on the neck. How bizarre.

  3. Colin says:

First of all, what other colors of anvils are there?
Second of all, this band is not for me. Not liking it.

  4. Squints says:

Their album is damn good. Kinda like Carcass mixed with a lil’ Black Metal. Good shit.

  5. Aye not for me! And yeah if better sound quality they may have had a better chance

    • Topher says:

I respect that. But the audio quality doesn’t do them justice. I will say this, Their Bass player gave me a leak of the record befor it came out. That’s pretty cool in my book.

  6. Mike says:

I was at that show and the sound quality of the video just sucks because they blew all the other bands out of the water. Everyone was really into it and talking about it afterwards for hours. Their Dethroned Emperor cover was heavy. If you care about the name of the band and not the quality of the music then stay home.

  7. Topher says:

Squints and Mike nailed it. These guys rock. Axl, you should totally check out the record.

  8. dr j says:

The video’s sound quality is to poor to make anything out. The songs on Myspace are incredible. This band is worth taking a few minutes out and load up the page and let the songs run.

  9. hibernum says:

I love the sound quality in this vid. It sounds like old school black metal, like Bood Fire Death…Dare I click on the link? Will they water down their sound in the studio with crystal clear protools production?

  10. Uglymicrowave says:

this shit blows….wtf is this…how could u even consider this music…that why these fuckers arent making millions…b/c they blow

  11. They definitely put on a live show, but their record isn’t too impressive. Maybe Relapse support will give them the boost they need.

  12. Charlie B says:

They are good but I don’t like the vocals. I’m not a fan of black metal.

  13. Nakleh says:

Black Anvil ARE INDEED the next big thing.

Not only do they fucking destroy, but they are awesome dudes as well. They deserve to be the next big thing.

  14. big_metal_al says:

Love this band! Congrats to them and Relapse.

  15. Revrant says:

Why would a shit sandwich like this be the next big thing?

You guys really fucking think any kind of screeching metalcore shit will be the next big thing? The next Sabbath?

    Christ monkeyballs, no.

  16. Grim Kim says:

Black Anvil FUCKING rule live and are great guys; seeing them sign to Relapse made my day. Salome are and always will be one of the BEST bands EVER, and I will fight anyone who even tries to deny it.
