NEW KILLSWITCH ENGAGE VIDEO LOOKS LIKE THE OLD KILLSWITCH ENGAGE VIDEO

Monday, June 8th, 2009 at 10:45am by Vince Neilstein

As many of you alerted us over the weekend in comments of completely unrelated posts, Killswitch Engage have a new video for the previously unreleased song “Starting Over.” The video was directed by Lex Halaby, who for better or worse seems to be obsessed with slow motion / stop motion / time-lapse photography; compared with the 2006 video for “My Curse” which he also directed, the new video looks kinda the same. I guess it’s his stylistic trademark, the visual equivalent of a mixer or producer’s trademark “sound” (think: the Adam D. sound, for a poignant example).

There’s no arguing that Halaby is a damn talented guy though, and the visuals are striking. The song? It sounds like Killswitch Engage. So there you have it, the MetalSucks synopsis in a nutshell: the new KsE video looks like the old KsE video and the new KsE song sounds like the old KsE song. Some of you will think this is a great thing and some of you will think this is a terrible thing. What else is new? Go argue about it in the comments.

Here’s the new video for “Starting Over,” and, for reference, the video for “My Curse” (and “Rose of Sharyn,” which Halaby also directed) after the jump.

I enjoy the new song. It’s catchy.

  2. Kye says:

I liked Reckoning more…but I like this song’s riffs more.

Regardless, it does indeed sound like KSE, which I’m ok with. I’ll enjoy the new CD.

  3. Metal Fuckin' Dave says:

Why does this band insist upon having hardly any guitar solos. Other than that minor bitch the song sounds pretty gravy.

  4. yanky says:

    nothin new/original with this
    but still diggin it

  5. Byron W. says:

I don’t care whether people think this band is cool or not..

  8. crapmcpoopin says:

I think his cinematography was better on “My Curse”, but oh well.

  9. Lorenzo says:

I’m not into this track at all and I’m trying to force myself to like it but it just seems too generic.

    • yanky says:

      youre generic

      can you headbang to it?
then what the fuck is wrong with it?
not every song has to reinvent the wheel
      they make fun headbanging music
get off your high chair and into the moshpit, fucktard

      • metalguy says:

its not that its unoriginal. me (and i beleive Lorenzo as well) just dont like the song

        • 'lil billy says:

I agree, I do not like this song. Why? Because it is metalcore, which I do not like, not because it is generic (but, of course, it is). Then again, if you look at things, a lot of stuff is generic.

  10. Johnny says:

    Fucking great. Love it.

  11. myke says:

  12. rleechb says:

Awesome song. Makes me want to put a bunch of weiners in my butt.

  13. Screwy says:

the “my curse” they released with the video sucks in comparison with the original :)

  14. Urban Outdoorsman says:

    @Screwy

Could not agree more. Howard’s Vox on the Video suck ass compared to the album version.
Compare the shitty video with the song here and you can tell the difference.

    • Nekcod says:

DUDE! Not only did they change the vocals they removed the double bass on the “This is my curse” part. I guess they wanted to reach out to the hard rock crowd and welcome them to the fold.

  15. CJ says:

    Good song.

  16. Screwy says:

does anyone have a download link for this song?

  17. niggaplease says:

Clearly the quality of “The End of Heartache” was a fluke.

  18. joshkid says:

KSE is just great, no matter what they do !

  19. Uncharted19 says:

Killswitch seems like there improving on there music, wether its heavy or not, Im likin it

  20. thebenthic says:

clearly killswitch should kill themselves. this song is complete shit COMPLETE SHIT!! end of heartache was their pinnacle.

    i agree with niggaplease.

theres nothing more to be said about what this album will be other than EPIC FAIL!

    • pokesmot says:

yeah epic fail lol kinda like you sitting in your moms basement on the PC
this album will absolutely sell more copies then your last CD

      • The Ghost of D. Boon says:

The million album selling superstar “pokesmot”, ladies and gentlemen.

Breaking new ground in internet insults with the amazingly original “mom’s basement” line.

Let’s hear a round of applause for “pokesmot,” folks and his band “The Pot.”

Check out their new song “Hey Kettle, U Black” at myspace.

  21. Malacoda says:

This song is meh. And yes, every single video has a chick falling away from a guy in it. See also: The end of heartache.

  22. zaragas15 says:

Blood Has Been Shed shits from above on this… Can please someone tell Howard and Justin that this sucks? Because they’ve only got eyes to money now…

  23. SolaceInNothing says:

Lol zaragas, yes that is exactly what many people will say, and I know this because that’s what they said when “The End of Heartache” came out, and then again with “As Daylight Dies”.

But I personally do not really believe that. The fact of the matter is a metal band has 2 routes to progress, either become more intense or to work more on melody. The purpose of KSE has always been to be the catchy verbose vocal answer to the uber masculine hardcore trend. So it should come to absolutely no surprise that they picked the latter.

KSE has fashioned out a very specific niche for themselves, of coarse if it does not cater to your subjective tastes then by no surprise you should hate this song, but to try and spin things like a bad political pundit attempting to label such band as sell outs is pretty far reaching considering, this is pretty much how they have always sounded. Now I am sure that there will be arguments of KSE not doing “something” that they did before, which in ones mindset probably gives credence to the “sell – out” charge, but don’t waste your time. It is mostly likely insignificant and not worth the effort of going back and forth over.

As for the Blood Has Been Shed comment . . .

I listen to BHBS and KSE and I love both bands for completely different reasons. I guess perhaps I am fairly utilitarian when it comes to metal, I’m one of those dudes who can totally chill to the folky rhythms of Enslaved or Agalloch but then be completely obliged to switch over to Pig Destroyer and rock out to the cavalcade of chaotic dissonance.

But that is why I got into metal in the first place. Its diversity, and no band should be flamed for being diverse. Whether its sound runs parallel to it being considered more mainstream or not does not necessarily mean they entwined.

  24. Mike Malice says:

KsE is the Twilight of metal

  25. Keith Brown says:

At the 2:53 mark, I couldn’t help but think of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

  26. Kyle says:

It’s ok. I do like both songs I’ve heard better than anything from ‘As Daylight Dies’ which is good, but I have a feeling the entire album will sound just like this song.

  27. Vince Klortho says:

Sounds to me like another album of rehashed major 3rds and lyrics that reflect wedding vows or teenage relationship angst. Is it me or does the new song sound like a plot to a David Schwimmer movie?

On a gay scale I rate it 5 out of 5 penises (or is it peni?)

    • The Ghost of D. Boon says:

Wait is 5 out of 5 penises good or bad. Your rating system is highly ambiguous, sir.

P.S; It’s only “i” for the plural if it is a word ending in “us” with a Latin origin.

      • Brock says:

Except for platypus, which there is multiple pluralization. I’ve heard that this is actually a pretty hot debate amongst English aficionados. Fuckin’ platypus. .

  28. Revrant says:

Not bad, it has more of a story at least, most of the stuff you guys cream over is just really heavy machismo, i.e. the bands standing around slamming their instruments and yelling with only lights flashing around them(and yet you hate Disturbed, zing), so I approve overall.

  29. Harry says:

The slow-motion faces gave me literally had me laughing. Especially 1:21.

Killswitch Engage used to be a guilty pleasure, but now I’m mature to love their music in the open.

  30. Dystopia says:

They really are The new Def Leppard. but with one more limb.

Still, Minus the visuals – i love it. But dammit – they really do lead with their chin when they make videos like this. It just amplifies every aspect of the song that you are able to ignore without visuals.

(i enjoy all incarnations of KSE, dont hate – just dont listen)

  31. uLy says:

For catchy metal I always go to Killswitch Engage so I’m ok with the song. This is what KSE does, and they do it well, why hate on it? The video however sucks. Why bother going back to this guy?

  32. DecrystallizingReason says:

That beard is the only truly great thing this band has produced since The End of Heartache.

  33. DecrystallizingReason says:

Also…that video sucks copious amounts of dick.

  34. pokesmot says:

KSE is great for what they are. I love all kinds of metal/hardcore/punk/rock it doesnt have to be blast beats, no melody and crazy timing changes all the time. This band has made a huge impact on the metal scene and obviously they are fucking awesome at what they do and people can talk shit all they want but in the end they know this album won’t fail.I bet it out sells every other KSE CD.
I AM STOKED FOR NEW BHBS

  35. The Ghost of D. Boon says:

Fuck me. Justin Foley, people. Bow down.

  36. Brock says:

I actually really like Killswitch’s videos. The themes for the videos are similar because the theme for the songs are similar. It makes sense to me. If they were to stray from the norm of what has become Killswitch staples, then people would be freaking out about that. Also, the guy in the video looks like an Abercrombie version of Trent Reznor.

  37. Reaper-X says:

Wow… End of Heartache 3.0 is totally going to rawk mah sawks.

  38. xXxDarkfoxXx says:

I don’t know I’m not really diggin this song “The Reckoning” is better.

    *KILLSWITCH 4 LIFE*
