MOVE OVER GOJIRA — 1980 ARE THE NEW NEW FRENCH TECH-DEATH METAL HEROS
Tuesday, June 9th, 2009 at 1:41pm by Kip WingerschmidtObviously Gojira won us over big time last year — their amazing album The Way of all Flesh topped Vince’s, Axl’s, and my top ten lists for 2008…..but here at MetalBlech, we are always looking for the next proverbial wet dream (in musical form a la progressive metal) — and this time I may have found em.
After our past fanboy-discovery glee in reporting on these guys, these guys, and these guys…..I am proud to offer to the jazzy instrumetal-hungry maniacs among you:
Enjoy!

Gojira was tech-death?
Gojira aren’t tech death and no one’s pretending otherwise. Kip always has approached genre classification like some mystic divination ritual, where the scrying of the cracks in the oracle bone ultimately serve merely to randomize human behavior, yet seem to have more meaning.
Plus, these guys blow. It’s like the worst parts of Freak Kitchen and Genghis Tron mushed into one mess of aural boredom. Yet another band you can’t even pretend to like unless you’re stoned out of your mind.
Ulcerate’s Everything is Fire is the best death metal album of 2009. Artistically satisfying and punishing technical death metal is their game. Fleshgod Apocalypse and Obscura have nothing on these Kiwi bastards.
What about Exivious? This is quite similar. I’m enjoying those two songs though. Will have to give it more listens.
Exivious is badass… these guys seem more like tech-prog than tech-death, really… I’m checking out their album now, but they seem more along the lines of Gordian Knot, Exivious, and the like.
It’s hard for me to get into bands that don’t have vocals. I know its very techy and probably hard to come up with vocal patterns, but if they do it, it just sounds better. I really dig the music though. Same opinion about Behold…the Arctopus and Scale the Summit.
this is gay
Amazing. Do want…
Kip, what the heck? What about the new Mars Volta that is about to drop in couple of weeks? What’s the word?
@Joe
Thanks! Just checked out Ulcerate, and just like you said, they’re fucking awesome, already downloaded the album and it’s one of the best things I’ve heard all year.
As for 1980, not that great. Not bad, but they certainly are not of the same calibre of Gojira.
Yeah Ollie, Ulcerate rule. You should definitely help them out by going to see them when they are on tour and buying their shit. They are the closest thing you’ve got to Gorguts in the 21st century. We gotta support bands like these because critical acclaim from metal blogs doesn’t just put money in their pockets.
“Move over Gojira” MY ASS.
You also reported on Centaurus-A – who deserve to be showcased more.
Tech might be pushing it on the labeling, but this is definitely prog metal. Same but different.
And you don’t tell Gojira to move over. Ever.
With that said it’s not bad. A little too proggy for my taste, but definitely a nice diversion from the everyday.
Devin Townsend’s Ki just came out on pre-order. Let’s talk about that instead OK? He shaved the skullet for chrissakes!!!
You guys are late…as fuck
Also, this band replaces GOROD, not Gojira.
I’ll be impressed if these guys are good enough to replace Gorod… Gorod’s new album is fucking fantastic.
Very…interesting.
Really boring. It started well enough but hearing a fucking bell solo is a bit of a stretch.
It’s not a “bell” It’s a keyboard.
I should elaborate that it’s a keyboard that sounds like a “vibraphone”
More then likely it’s not a real vibraphone because they are expensive and more difficult to record then a keyboard.
These guys are fantastic! Thanks for the post.
Why does everyone hate this?
