I had the same reaction to Unearth. Just not my thing. Testament kicked ass. And the boys in L.A.D. were great, even if I am old enough to be their mother!

Every single song on “the onslaught” kicks ass right up until the vocals start. they completely ruin the songs for me, which really sucks because the songs sound so fucking good right up to that point. i just cant get over the shitty ass vocals.

I’ve seen Unearth twice now, and I regard them as the best live band I’ve ever witnessed. I can understand that, to someone who isn’t a fan, their songs could sound a bit same-y and boring, and I’ll also admit that their new album is pretty poor but for the actual people who are there to see Unearth, they always deliver.
All of that aside, I really wish this tour had come to the UK. One of the only tours where the whole bill was awesome.

Unearth is everything that’s wrong with metal right now. They’re about as generic as Lamb of God, Job for a Cowboy or any other metalcore band that is enjoying their 15 minutes. Lazarus A.D., however, does a modern version of thrash, and unlike Unearth, they can actually play. Testament just all-around kicks ass.

I’m not so much into the more underground bands that you guys are but I’ve gotta say that unearth are better judged on record than live. For me The Oncoming Storm is one of the best metal albums I’ve ever heard. Still hits that spot for me in a way their other albums can’t.

lazarus and testament are straight up no-fuckin-around thrash
but unearth is a really cool band that isnt stuck in say… ’83, with a really cool live show
saw them at the starland balroom (with the above bands)
one of their guitarists walked offstage and onto the bar for like a half a song

I couldn’t agree with the write up more. My buddy and I hung in the back for Unearth and were like “WTF?”. They were boring as hell.

If only we had Testament & Exodus on the same bill, maybe with LazAD opening up. That would be a cool show.

Corey- Although I do love your book (which I am still trying to get through) “Pure Murder” I disagree 1000000% about Unearth. Granted we have different views growing up in very different time’s of Metal. Unearth deserves all the respect they get. They are one of the top live bands right now. They play balls out no bullshit metal. I saw Ken Susi of Unearth a few years back play a solo behind his head. It was gross.

I do agree about Lazarus though…the new cd is killer.

I noticed that too at the show up here in Toronto, actually. People were cumming bricks and spears for Unearth and while what they played wasn’t inherently BAD, it left this “Meh, I could go for a bathroom break now I guess” afterthought from the moment they stepped on. The rhythm guitarist acted like he belonged in Blink-182 rather than a metal band which really bugged me. I’m all for having fun on stage, but when you’re running around in circles chasing your own tail, there’s only one way to do it right.
Goofy smile and an “I’M SO AWESOME, LOOK AT ME” motion every once in awhile; that’s not the right way to do it.

Chuck Billy’s goofy too, air-guitaring with a mic stand, but fuck, he’s not pretentious about it. He knows he’s just being silly about shit, and encourages everyone else to air-guitar too XD
