THIS WEEK IN SOUNDSCAN: CHICKEN-WHAT?
Wednesday, June 17th, 2009 at 4:01pm by Vince NeilsteinThis week in Soundscan, supergroup Chickenfoot shifted a ridiculous number of records. I’m baffled too. Elsewhere, Iron Maiden had a solid debut and bands like Nickelback, Hollywood Undead, Shinedown, Slipknot, and Metallica continued on with business as usual.
4 CHICKENFOOT – CHICKENFOOT
This week: 79,300
Cume: 131,092
That’s a damn big number, but the real story is that in its second week on the charts the record is up 53% from last week. When does this EVER happen these days? Can I get a collective “What the Fuck???” In the rock radio vortex that is NYC, these guys could have a monster radio smash and I wouldn’t know it… do they? Because the admittedly strong reputations of the band members are not, I don’t think, enough to move this kind of tonnage alone.
15 NICKELBACK – DARK HORSE
This week: 24,336
Cume: 2,027,417
Thank you, Nickelback, for continuing to fund poorer Roadrunner artists.
21 SHINEDOWN – SOUND OF MADNESS
This week: 17,483
Cume: 524,527
Still listening to this great album a year after release.
34 IRON MAIDEN – FLIGHT 666 ORIGINAL SOUNDTRACK
This week: 13,274 (debut)
I’m actually surprised it didn’t sell more. Probably because this figure doesn’t count DVD sales, and most sensible people would just buy the DVD to get the full package.
50 HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD – SWAN SONGS
This week: 9,874
Cume: 418,748
Get used to that awful feeling in the pit of your stomach, because these guys are going to be around for a while.
60 MARILYN MANSON – HIGH END OF LOW
This week: 8,947
Cume: 74,628
Third week on, sinking faster than Marilyn Manson’s career.
71 DREDG – PARIAH THE PARROT THE DELUSION
This week: 7,492 (debut)
That’s an alright debut for Dredg, I think? Curious how it stacks up against their others.
112 DISTURBED – INDESTRUCTIBLE
This week: 4,505
Cume: 1,019,534
Recently crossed the platinum threshold, and it’ll keep going. Unfortunately, this album still has a single or two left in it.
116 METALLICA – DEATH MAGNETIC
This week: 4,432
Cume: 1,779,888
Look at that, almost double platinum. Sheesh.
154 SLIPKNOT – ALL HOPE IS GONE
This week: 3,404
Cume: 788,477
Almost platinum. Consistent sellers. Good for them!
161 DEVIL WEARS PRADA WITH ROOTS ABOVE & BRANCHES BELOW
This week: 3,310
Cume: 57,883
That’s 3,310 more records than this suck-tastic band should’ve sold this week.
Elsewhere, on the “Top Hard Music” charts….
29 HALESTORM – HALESTORM
This week: 2,604
Cume: 28,329
I likee.
30 HEAVEN & HELL – THE DEVIL YOU KNOW
This week: 2,584
Cume: 59,034
Warner’s gotta be really disappointed in this number, no? Extremely weak for a band with such a great legacy. Probably would’ve sold more if it said “Black Sabbath” on it.
43 LACUNA COIL – SHALLOW LIFE
This week: 2,188
Cume: 52,007
Century Media, on the otherhand, has gotta be super-thrilled with this.
44 MASTODON – CRACK THE SKYE
This week: 2,408
Cume: 102,487
I think this one’s right about at the same sales number that Blood Mountain topped out at. Not sure, though.
59 CKY – CARVER CITY
This week: 1,713 -
Cume: 18,769
I tried listening to this album thinking, “Hey, I’ll give ‘em a fair shot.” It blows.

CHICKENFOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
so im not the only nutter whos diggin satch’s new band
one bar of joes playing kicks 99.9% of other musicians entire discography
’nuff said
No autumn offering? i thought theyd sell pretty good
This was the album’s 1st full week of sales. Last week’s 49K were for only three days worth of sales since it was released on a Friday.
They’re still shockingly good #’s, though.
How can Lacuna Coil be above Mastodon, when Mastodon sold more records (2408 to 2188)? You’s got some ’splainin’ ta do.
cuz of the comment on the album before it. ” warner bros. is dissapointed…. century media, on the other hand, shouldnt be..”
Damn. The Devil You Know deserved more. It’s a pretty damn solid album.
Very true, one of my favorites this year.
I wasn’t even aware the Chickenfoot existed until 2 weeks ago. Now they are selling records like crazy! I guess having that many multi-platinum artist in the same band helps. Too bad that didn’t work for Heaven and Hell’s The Devil you Know. That is a good album.
I hate to admit it….but I’m liking the Chickenfeet too. Catchy songs with a hot shit guitar god, kick ass drummer…..and Sammy screaming like a banshee. But Mikey’s backing vox REALLY set the album off for me. Don’t tell me that THAT ALONE doesn’t remind us all of the mighty VH.
Yep. I’m likin’ it.
How the fuck can you say that CKY’s new one blows? I thought it was a great return to form after their last album.
I like Chickenfoot. I missed this kind of laid back, non-pretentious hard-rock these days. Good for them!
Is it just me or is it weird that you guys are saying CKYs new cd blows…….. and your also giving it as a prize for your unreadable band logo of the week. Im guessing slipknot now because of it just to piss you guys off
Axl runs the band logo thing, and Vince posted this.
not quite, theyre both on record hating cky.

maybe this has something to do with nobody winning the logo contest.
nope there probably gfetting paid to advertise an album through the contest, and therefore have to say they like it to try and get their fans to listen.
and their last album was pretty good, leaning more towards listenable
nice! I actually like a couple of chickenfoot songs, pretty kickass!
and I’m really glad that Shinedown is doing good!
I don’t know about a collective “WTF” BUt I do know that Chickenfoot is damn good & would open a case of Wup-Ass on that Nickelback crud.
Based on these comments I think it is time for a metalsucks poll:
People who dig Chickenfoot; how old are you?
I’m a 20 year old metalhead, and I like me some chickenfoot. I would definitely check them out live.

Chickenfoot isn’t bad at all. I’m 16. Fuck Devil Wears Prada.
The Chickenfoot CD is actually pretty good. It’s like some have already noted in these comments, good old Hard Rock with solid musicianship. It was cool to see how well Satch worked within the context of a band like this. I love his playing and Sammy never sounded better. Also agree that the new H&H is awesome.
That Devil Wears Prada album is not terrible. I was not a fan before I listened to it, and I’m not gonna follow them on tour or anything, but I came away impressed by a few songs. I like the CKY album too, and I’ve never been a fan of theirs.
Good for the boys in Chickenfoot. Slag them all you want, but its just four rich guys out for a good time and it translates in their music.
when you say for that “halestorm” that “you likee” is that you like that band or that it isn’t selling? sorry never heard of them
now that we got that hollywood undead selling there’s already rip offs like some band i heard called 3oh!3 or some such nonesense… blech.. crappy white rap from priveledged kids trying to sound shocking,,.. but i guess with eminem back so would be white rap
wasn’t checkenfoot just released at best buy the first week and went on sale everywhere else the next week?
