Neurosis is pure raw emotion. Anger, Sadness, and Joy all rolled into one. Add some good King Bud into the mix and BOOM you have a sonic journey. Amazing band, pure class, I can't believe I just bought the rerelease of Souls At Zero, and Through Silver in Blood. Timeless classic records.

A god damned Greek tragedy hearing about someone leaving after...Cryptopsy? before Mastodon comes on, and bashing Neurosis.

One would think Simple Minds is a better band of choice for said person, being in relation and all.

Neurosis is an acquired taste, most certain, and if youve got it, its like caviar for the sonically intelligent. They do much the same as Godflesh once did. I distinctly recall an interview with Broadrick where he stated he wanted to create sound "that hurts the listener", and that stuck with me. I feel Neurosis is much in the same vein, its punishing, abysmal, but excellent at the same time. An experience, really.

Much better than ripping off Swede melodies, infusing pseudo NY hxc breakdowns, throwing token death growls and following the other lemmings off the flavor of the year cliff.

I can't get into certain albums but I definitely recommend checking out the Neurosis/Jarboe collaboration album. One of the most terrifying creepy albums I have.

"energy (what really happens is that the huge amount of energy they have they utilize to drain YOU of any energy;"

Damn, that is the perfect way to say it. Cheers.

When I think of the word "heavy". To me it doesn't get any heavier then Neurosis. End of the line. Done. Cannot be beat.

I honestly feel bad for people who can't "hear" or "feel" the power of Neurosis. Any metal fan who doesn't like Neurosis should look up the song "Locust Star" live on YOUTUBE. Thats fucking POWER!!!!

It sounds a bit gay I guess, but I think you have to know depression and sadness really well to be able to get into Neurosis. Being a pothead doesn't hurt either.

Shrinebuilder, looks and sounds like it will be a sonic journey. How can you not like Scott Kelly and Wino together on one album? Add Dale Crover of the Melvins, and you have one incredible sonic unit.

About Neurosis' appeal (warning: may not make much sense): funny, a lot of people get into the whole "Neurosis: punk or metal" argument, but to me they're more like a noise band that utilizes a LOT of hardcore punk & metal (and post-rock as of the last three albums) elements in their efforts to get you to FEEL something, kind of like an industrial version of Roger Waters-era Pink Floyd, personal feelings/philosophies blown up to an EPIC level, primal screams at the heart of the universe; their albums (from Souls at Zero onwards) are like this movie-like travelogues, taking you to the mental place their creators were at the time; whether this involves doom-metal riffing, gentle melodies or repetitive noise is up to Neurosis, but you can always be assured that at the very least, it's done with a specific purpose.

I know that Neurosis seem to lack a lot of the traits that make metal appealing to a lot of people: energy (what really happens is that the huge amount of energy they have they utilize to drain YOU of any energy; POWER seems to apply more in their case), speed, blazin' riffs (though I think they have unique, awesome riffs, they are admittedly quite simplistic...and slllooooww), hell, even melody (Isis has got them beat as far as simplistic yet lush "post-metal" melodies go, for example) but I think that if you approach Neurosis from the angle I described above, you can get an idea of why they appeal to so many people... I suggest you start from their latest, Given to the Rising, as it's probably their most melodic-yet-heavy release.

Or you can just smoke a bowl and listen to "Enemy of the Sun", like terryg75 said (it probably works just fine)
