SOUNDSCAN: A BIG WEEK FOR DREAM THEATER, DARKEST HOUR, GOATWHORE
Wednesday, July 1st, 2009 at 3:26pm by Vince Neilstein
Last week was a ginormous week for new metal releases, and with new ones from Killswitch and Suicide Silence this week promises to be the same. Topping last week’s crop was Dream Theater’s Black Clouds & Silver Linings which debuted at #6 on the Soundscan Charts. Wait a minute… Dream Theater debuted at #6?? Holy fuckity-fuck. Darkest Hour, The Mars Volta, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster and Goatwhore also had strong debuts. Click through for chart positions and sales numbers.
#6 DREAM THEATER – BLACK CLOUDS & SILVER LININGS
This week: 40,285 (debut)
That a band who does what Dream Theater do can sell so many records is amazing. It speaks to their timelessness and continued relevance. The album’s not even that good as far as Dream Theater albums go, but hey, it’s Dream Theater and I still love ‘em. Both the chart position and sales number are the highest ever for the band.
12 MARS VOLTA – OCTAHEDRON
This week: 29,880 (cebut)
Not metal but a lot of people here will appreciate this.
15 CHICKENFOOT – CHICKENFOOT
This week: 24,611
Cume: 198,647
Fourth week on, finally dropping. Still… sold way more than I’d expected it to, at all.
47 HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD SWAN SONGS
This week: 8,901
Cume: 437,529
124 HOLLYWOOD UNDEAD – SWAN SONGS B-SIDES
This week: 4,084 (debut)
Fear for today’s children.
71 MAYLENE & THE SONS OF DISASTER – III
This week: 6,048 (debut)
Good for these dudes. This is a solid record. We’re streaming a free track here.
81 ALEXISONFIRE – OLD CROWS/YOUNG CARD
This week: 5,703 (debut)
Some people dig this band, right?
104 DARKEST HOUR – ETERNAL RETURN
This week: 4,746 (debut)
This album also landed at #1 on the Top New Artist Albums chart which is funny because, like, these guys have been around for 15 years. But I’m actually jamming this record as I type this and it’s awesome!
184 BROKENCYDE – I’M NOT A FAN BUT THE KIDS LIKE IT
This week: 2,779
Cume: 9,072
Thank GOD this didn’t end up being as big as the hordes of MySpace kids made it out to be. MySpace fans ≠ real fans.
190 GOATWHORE – CARVING OUT THE EYES OF GOD
This week: 2,686 (debut)
YES!!!!!!!
-VN

I admire Dream Theatre’s career, even if I pretty much can’t stand their music.
Love that new Goatwhore, though!
How many people fail to spell Dream Theater correctly?
In England, they say Theatre, just like in French, so maybe he just didn’t realize
They’re all gays.
Good to see people still buying records. Thats good for the scene.
Even Alexisonfire suck now, you’e got to admit that they’re first album is rediculously awesome.
Agree
I actually dig the new Alexisonfire. Yes the first album was pretty raw and so was the second one to an extent, but I also dig the new sound of the last 2 albums. It’s much more refined.
Bands that don’t evolve are boring.
Dallas Green is an amazing singer. I haven’t heard anything he’s done that I don’t like.
They’re one of my favorite non-metal bands.
Seconded
Holy crap how has this conversation gone this long without some douchetard interjecting with something like “ALEXISONFIRE IS GAY AND YOU ARE GAY NON-METAL GAYGAY HUGLHJGHBBJ”
I am shocked and appalled, MetalSucks. Shocked. And. Appalled.
OMG I HATE THAT BAND SO MUCH THEY SUCK DONKEYASS. Problem solved
**even though
buy more goatwhore!!! i went to an actual CD store and bought the actual CD. it was kinda fun. that CD destroys!
The new album by Dream Theater is their best one since Scenes From A Memory and their success is much deserved. They’ve earned it due to consistency and talent. Congratulations.
Agreed.
Yeah i love it and by the way when is Metal sucks is going review the album?
I’ve been past the whole Sammy Hagar thing a long time, but any time real rock musicians sell albums, that’s good. And good for DT, as well. The rest of the top of the list is pretty sparse, though.
Brokencyde have failed to see that when most of your fans are ignorant 12-year-old kids most of them are just going to pirate your album.
I still can’t believe that band really exists.
Picked up that Goatwhore today. Shit’s dope.
Alexisonfire was standard… whatever it is you want to call them. I know some people like to twist their panties about “real” emo versus “fake” emo versus screamo versus blah blah blah blah, but I’ll go ahead and say Crisis was a good album because FINALLY a sing/scream, kinda-hardcore, kinda gay band had hooks a dude (albeit a not-so-manly dude) could appreciate.
I guess, all’s I know is it’s good to know sissy bands like this because there aren’t too many gals out there willing to throw down some goregrind with you.
“The album’s not even that good as far as Dream Theater albums go,”
For every sensible thing you guys say, there’s always another downright incorrect/confusing comment, isn’t there?
new goatwhore slays, i was the asshole on the r train today @ 530 in the morning headbanging to it…lol new dream theater really surpised me i dig it
Well, no one asked for it, and no one really cares for it, but I’ll give my review/opinion of the new DT – BC&SL CD. – Meh..
I actually concur with Vince’s sentiment “The album’s not even that good as far as Dream Theater albums go.”
A lot seems to be a retread of previous work. While “A Rite of Passage” is currently my favorite track, if one listens to the “The Dark Eternal Night” from Systematic Chaos, you’ll hear a lot of the same (just reworked enough) Same goes for most of the album. “Wither” has a lot in common with “Forsaken”, and “The Shattered Fortress” obviously contains many previous AA themed songs. But, musically, they can perform quite well and I find myself listening to the instrumental versions of the songs (on the 3CD package) more than the main CD. JL’s voice is okay (albeit a little irritating), but the lyrics overall aren’t too compelling hence the ‘meh’ review.
Comparing BCaSL to SC is stupid. SC is their failed attempt at a full-metal album, and it became their worst output as a result, whereas BCaSL succeeds at being a balanced output of all of their trademark sounds.
Comparing a bands current albums to previous albums is ridiculous, I wish people would judge a bands output
on it’s own.
I think BSaSL is another great album from a great band.
It’s a lot better than half the crap the kids are buying….excuse me…pirating these days.
Like the past 89570759905 DT albums, it takes time to grow on you, but now that I have listened to it a few dozen times, I keep going back and finding something else to enjoy.
All you haters go spin your Lamb of God albums and take a seat.
