SEE YOU NEXT… UH… WHEN?

Add See You Next Tuesday to the list of bands that seem to be breaking up while claiming they’re not breaking up. To wit, this statement from the band:

“After much time and thought we, See You Next Tuesday, have decided to go on hiatus for a undetermined amount of time. It could be months, it could be years, we don’t really know at the moment. It was a very difficult decision for us to make, but after a string of bad luck that has lasted for almost two years, it doesn’t seem logical or even possible for us to really continue touring at our normal pace or at all.

“With that said, I’d also like to mention that we are not disbanding. All of us share a common love for this band and our music. We plan on continuing on where we left off with ‘Intervals’ some time in the future. We just need time to focus on real life. Get our lives set once again, and then we can continue on with See You Next Tuesday.”

The thing is, a “hiatus” of years would ostensibly be equivalent to a break-up followed by a reunion. You can call it whatever you want, but the bottom line is there won’t be any See You Next Tuesday.

That’s too bad ’cause See You Next Tuesday are a good band. But there’s not a lot of money to be made in metal, and especially not grind, so I understand where the group is coming from.

Still, bummer.

Your last chance to see SYNT for could be a good long time (or ever) is their current tour with Arsonists Get All the Girls. Get tour dates here.

Intervals was an immemorable blur for me.
    I really liked Parasite though.

  • Fufkin

Their name sounds like a spoof emo band

    • b-rad

      um… it means CUNT

  • Dysenteric

I hope this becomes more than a hiatus very quickly. I have fuck all respect for this band. Slight grind influences do not a grindcore band make. SYNT have as much grind acumen as IWRESTLEDABEARONCE, Suicide Silence and Trigger The Bloodshed – either negligible or totally absent. Kids may mix up the genres, and that’s a common mistake for newbies to make, but anything that the band’s fans or the Last.fm Tagging Regiment may say about SYNT being legitimately grind is just incorrect.

I would have respect for this band if they come to their senses and just decided to quit full stop. They have always sucked. Parasite blew chunks.

  • Matt

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
See You Next Tuesday is one of my favorite bands.
    Shit.

  • datrick

SYNT were a great fucking band. Being a resident of michigan, i have been fortunate enough to see them on several occasions. i think it’s sad that they have no choice but to take a break.

i think it’s funny that elitist dorks (@dysentric) spend just as much time (if not more) slamming bands they dislike, more than they praise the bands that they like. fuck you man, time to get out of mom’s basement.

    • Dysenteric

I think it’s good to have a nice balance between criticising bands and praising what I like, and/or merely stating some facts. If you think that me doing that makes me an elitist, well, that’s your business.

Or… are just calling me an elitist because my opinion differs from yours, and you’re upset over the fact that someone doesn’t like your favourite band?

Have a think over this for a while.

      • datrick

actually, you come off as an elitist because of your “more-metal-than-thou” authority on what is or isnt considered grindcore, and your use of the word “newbies.”

        • Dysenteric

          1. I was merely stating some facts on what makes a grindcore band.

          2. I used the ‘newbies’ word to describe those unfamiliar with grindcore, I didn’t mean anything nasty by it.

          3. I didn’t post with any authority or “more-metal-than-thou” mindset. Yeah, I may’ve sounded negative, it’s a habit.

  • esteban

saw these guys once live, fuck i would’ve rather gone out into the parking lot and stuff glass in my ears. one more shit band bites the dust.

  • Z

Parasite sucked but Intervals was amazing. Damn, I never got to see them live.

  • Kye

Add me to the list of people that doesn’t really care at all

Agreed. This band was interesting for about 4 notes of a song.I’m not one who knows a shitload about Grind, but heavy, sloppy and loud do NOT = grind.Listen to a Napalm Death album and then listen to one of these “grind” bands of today. There is a tightness and a coherency that is missing from the newer bands who think it is hip to come up with clever names and imitate the bands that were making waves in 2003 making the same exact style of music. The downside of the Myspace Generation is that any asshole can put together a “music project” now. This causes oversaturation and now it is hard to tolerate anything that comes out now.To these guys, I say good riddance.I know there are people who enjoyed them the same way I’ve enjoyed some underdog bands that have since called it quits, but the fewer of these bands around, the easier it is for the cream to rise.

  • Bicro

    Damn.
This band is actually one of the rare experiences I’ve had in watching musical development from first album onward.
    Liked Intervals, by the way.
    Oh well……

  • Carnage9

hope this doesnt last too long, one of my favourite newer metal bands. :( to those who havent heard them give their album “Parasite” a listen.

  • Matt

They may not be what grindcore is in the sense of Napalm Death, but it’s what grindcore has evolved into today. I’m gonna agree with datrick and say you elitists need to get over that and accept it for what it is. I loved both Parasite AND Intervals for different reasons. Parasite was all over the place guitar-wise and really heavy at parts, but Intervals was just fast and crushing. You guys need to open your mind a little and stop worrying about scene kids liking stuff and have your own opinion.

    • Dysenteric

I’ll tell you what I tell everyone else who uses that “open your mind” line:

I can accept experimentations with the grindcore genre as long as the material does not suffer – the new elements have to work with the grind. Lucid Interval-era Cepahic Carnage is a great example of how to put a decent twist on grind. Cephalectomy, Swarrrm and Negligent Collateral Collapse are other bands who put out great albums without following the grindcore blueprint to a T.

Bands like SYNT and IWABO may use grind elements, but there’s no real flow between the grind and any other influences, and the grind is somewhat subdued or left in the back while the main deathcore/trance/metalcore/etc. etc. sound takes over. SYNT are mainly considered experimental deathcore, who choose to experiment with grind. The same applies to IWABO and similar bands.

Now, If SYNT and similar bands could create decent music, I’d be willing to accept them, unfortunately, the bad mix of grind and everything else results in subpar material; in some cases, it’s practically unlistenable. I first listened to SYNT when I was getting into grind, I knew pretty much nothing about grind then, it still didn’t change the fact that SYNT sounded terrible. I made that judgement without any Neanderthal attitude towards the music (I couldn’t have), I was wanting to hear it for what it is.

Besides, there are far more bands today playing what can correctly be labelled as grindcore than the major label acts playing slightly distorted deathcore under the guise of grindcore. And, seeing as the majority of these bands are the products of the MySpace generation – kids with white belts and ironic T-shirts – this misinterpretation of grindcore is fated to disappear when the newest trend goes into full swing, following nu-metal, metalcore, and all other fads before it. I believe the newest thing is that crappy “sludge” music being peddled by Kylesa and Minsk.

Can anyone here think of any new “grindcore” bands like SYNT and IWABO that may successfully contradict my points?
